Chapter 273: Using Construction
Chapter 273: Using Construction
Aeryon could see that even though the marketplace is not fully opened, the roads are not fully constructed, narrow and dirty, the area of the marketplace is full of traders haggling over goods and he could hear from afar merchants yelling out the names of their wares and prices.
Surrounding the marketplace, clusters of mud-brick dwellings rose in irregular patterns, their domed roofs blending seamlessly with the natural contours of the land.
This is very unusual for the people of the Steppe so most of these mud brick dwellings is actually houses that is constructed by the Yan people.
It would take time for him to change the habit of sleeping in the tent, though Aeryon does not know whether such habits should be discouraged.
Because Ger, is very flexible to be used in the Steppe and very much adapt to the living method of the Steppe people who is always moving all over the Steppe.
Half-finished walls encircled the city.
The stones from the system is quite powerful so Aeryon is confident that it could protect against the harsh elements.
In the end, the city is just a symbol.
Even if the city is breached, the Steppe people are not people who fought in confined spaces.
Aeryon would not sacrifice the mobility of the horse to fight like those Yan people.
The walls unlike the walls of Yan cities is different in purpose.
The Yan created their walls as they fear the threat of the Great Steppe raids.
Aeryon walls is constructed so that it could withstand the heavy hails, the winds that pushes the tents away, the natural elements that wreck their settlements.
Not all parts of the city is constructed from stone
Some of them is constructed from rough-hewn stone and packed earth
With the addition of new people and slaves from the Nurshira raid, the construction has been going fast
Now, the walls has risen to a modest height, their jagged edges casting long shadows across the Steppe as the sun dipped below the horizon.
Despite their incomplete state, the walls is imposing just by looking at it.
"When I conquered the Steppe, this city would be like a thorn that would make all the Yan attempt toward the Steppe a failed endeavour"
Aeryon wanted to do something for the Steppe.
Even if in the worst-case scenario where he failed conquering the Steppe in his lifetime, at least when the city is finished, the massive sheer size of it would make sure that the tragedy where those abominable Yna people massacring the people of the Steppe would not be repeated again;
"I might fail to unify the Steppe. But I am pretty sure that I would be able to unify the Southern Great Steppe before my death" Aeryon is young but he also knows the vastness of the world
The Steppe alone is huge.
Huger than the Great Steppe in his world.
His ambition did not change one bit.
He always wanted to have the whole Steppe and then using the power of the Steppe people to conquer the world just like Genghis Khan had did in his world
But he is also a realist. There is always a great chance that he would not be able to unify the Steppe
If that is the case, then all he could do is to create a solid foundation for his descendant.
So, that even if someday he failed unify the Great Steppe, his descendant would be able to inherit his will and his desire and fulfil his wish
Aeryon nodded to himself.
The people that is coming to Brolgadhr might see a half-finished wall, a new city being built but in Aeryon eyes, he could already see the completed city in his mind.
Huge, full of people and a stone that would stop all invasion from Yan.
A central place where orders could be given to the north, to the east to the west and to act as a shield for the South.
If it is attacked it means that it would delay the enemies.
The chief of the Steppe could quickly gathered, amass a great army and repel any invasion from Yan.
And the soldiers of Brolgadhr could respond to any attack by the other direction.
This plan of course means that it is a measure that Aeryon had created if he failed to unify and break out from the Steppe.
Then at least this city would act as a shield.
If he manage to unify the Steppe, expand the border beyond the Great Steppe, then of course the importance of the city would not be that high.
Aeryon ride toward the other side of the city and he could see cranes and scaffolding dotted the perimeters
Aeryon only smiles at this.
These cranes and scaffolding of course is not the handiwork of the Steppe people.
Instead, it is the work of the Yan slaves that they caught.
Aeryon is quite generous with the people he caught and he employs artisans and craftsmen without prejudice.
He gave them good rewards, gave them privileges.
Unlike other servants and slaves, they are not forced to do hard labour, they are not whipped and most of the other things that other slaves should do, is not things they should do.
They are given tent of their own and even though they are supervised so that they would not run away, their freedom is not that constrained compare to the other slaves.
One could say that the treatment of craftsman and artisan under Aeryon is even better than their treatment when they are in Yan
And with such treatment how could they not contribute and look at him as their ruler?
Nationalism is not as defined in the past as it is in the future.
Not many of them have that much love for the Yan empire especially in the area of the borders
Not to mention Yan people treat people different from them harshly.
And to the imperial and the scholar nobles of the Yan empire, the common people is like grass to them, easily weeded out if it mess with their mood
Other than a few people who truly cares for the common people, most of the aristocratic families cares little about the common people.
Even more so if those people are artisans and craftsman
They are the ones that created the cranes and Aeryon ask the Steppe people who could not fight to learn all that they can
They might not be able to read but even an idiot could learn by observation. With the use of the cranes and scaffolding, the height of the wall could be made higher.
Aeryon himself wanted to make it perfect and sturdy so that it could act as a bulwark and at the same time as a defense against his enemies.
The city itself is designed to be vast.
"And the bigger it is, the longer it would take, the more resources it would take"
Aeryon is actually using construction to drive the economy.
This would create jobs, and increase infrastructure development.
Aeryon is using the money , gold and jewellery and resource that he took from Nurshira and the resources that he gets from the system to invest in large-scale infrastructure projects
He did not use paper money. That would take more than just him declaring wanting to change the money.
Most of the Steppe does not use coins instead trade using barter. Even in yan, in many corners far away from the capital, the people there all uses barter system
The economic system of this world is still quite primitive. So, what does Aeryon uses? Gold as it is something that everyone recognizes. He uses food. Horses. Precious metal and ore.
Unlike other chiefs, Aeryon did not hoard the wealth that he has. Instead, the more he has, the more he spreads it out.
Money that did not make money is bad money. Resources that could not benefit him is a bad resource
Aeryon has many plans. But one of them is the economic plans. A prosperous Steppe, a powerful army, if he create this two condition, he could conquer the world, and create a lasting dynasty
The first step to create a powerful economy, is the unification of the tribes. There is hundreds of nomadic tribes scattered all over the four corners of the Steppe.
To build a cohesive economy, the first step must be to unify these tribes under one banner. This is why Aeryon repeatedly tell Mayeux that his goal is to unify the tribe.
But that is not the end goal of his ambition. To unify the tribe is to create an economy. When he unifies the tribe, he could establish a central authority that would transcend tribal boundaries.
Aeryon also recognises that the Steppe vastness, especially this world Steppe vastness present challenges.
But it is also an opportunity.
Aeryon needs to build efficient trade routes connecting different regions for the challenges of the vastness of the Steppe to be conquered.
For now, he did it in small scale connecting the trade between his original Brolgadhr tribe with the tribes he had conquered.
He also encourage the formation of merchant caravans. Facilitating the exchange of goods, information and culture
Trade routes is not yet quite developed and Aeryon sees an opportunity here to connect with the other empires
Yan, Yindu, Roma and far past these great empires are many other kingdoms and empires. These are the things he could do now.
