Chapter 1660: Section 1661 Rewards
By day, he was a Priest at the theological academy who listened to the afflictions of the faithful. But by night, he transformed into an executioner of sin.
Every year, at least four to five people would suffer his secret executions. When the author penned "The Long Day and Night," he had already executed over a hundred people.
When the author wrote this book, he did not believe his actions were wrong.
The people he killed were the very fiends spoken of by the believers who sought his solace.
He listened to the believers’ disasters during the day, and at night, he switched to the role of executioner, enacting retribution on behalf of the believers. For this reason, none of them would report him, allowing him to live out his days in tranquility. To the believers, the author was a savior.
If he hadn’t written this book, no one would know the truth about those departed souls. He wrote the book because he was getting on in years, and before his death, he hoped to reflect on his life and then tell the world that although he had a dual personality, different by day and night, he enjoyed his time walking in the darkness, which made him appreciate the light of the day even more.
"Walking in darkness to appreciate the beauty of daylight?" After hearing Angel’s words, Farina seemed to have thought of something: "Onassis said something similar; could it be that he’s projecting himself into the protagonist of this book?"
Angel: "Perhaps."
"If that’s really the case, then the changes in his body might indeed be like the protagonist’s in ’The Long Day and Night,’ resulting from a dual personality." Farina realized, if it is a dual personality, then that explains it.
The other judges were also listening to the conversation between Farina and Angel. Upon hearing this, someone muttered softly: "I’ve heard that people with a dual personality often have an alternate ego that is diametrically opposed to the primary persona. The primary persona experiences various repressions in reality, and the alternate ego is born from this repression, releasing one’s true nature completely, and that’s why an extreme personality emerges."
"That sounds rather good; on the path of the Wizard, repression itself is an obstacle to advancement, but it is unavoidable. If there is an alternate ego, it could easily solve this difficulty."
"That being said, it’s hard to say whether the alternate ego will listen to you. Additionally, dual personalities are rare in themselves."
Angel, having overheard their conversation, really wanted to tell them that there are in fact mystical artifacts in this world that can induce a dual personality directly.
Like Frost’s ’Dark Melody.’
However, Frost’s matter was ultimately a secret, and Mysterious Objects are not things that ordinary people can access; there was no need to disclose this.
"If Onassis really has a dual personality, it explains his behavior. But where does his power come from? His strength feels many times greater than when I first saw him; it’s not possible that just by switching personalities, power can materialize out of thin air," someone asked.
Many others echoed this question, as the strength Onassis displayed in the end was almost comparable to that of an Official Wizard. Could it be that with the switch in personalities, his strength changed as well?
While the crowd was buzzing with speculation, one of the heads on the far right side of Hydra opened its eyes.
This was the first time Hydra’s right head had opened its eyes, and unlike the feeling when its middle head opened its eyes, when the right one did, everyone felt a peculiar sense of insight, as if their deepest secrets were being peered into.
The feeling of being nakedly exposed before others was quite uncomfortable.
Everyone instinctively showed wariness.
In the gaze of Hydra’s right head, indeed, almost no secrets could be hidden from it except for a few Official Wizards who had used special Defense Spells that made them less clear. Among the most unique was... Angel.
Angel had not used any Spell Technique, but Hydra still couldn’t see him clearly. It was as if green Patterns enveloped him. Any prying eyes were blocked by the green Patterns.
Hydra felt a slight regret; it had wanted to use the eye of its right head to uncover Angel’s mysteries, but the attempt to surprise him was not successful. However, regret was but a momentary feeling. It harbored some interest in Angel, but was only curious to a certain extent, not to the point where it felt compelled to investigate.
Hydra slowly withdrew its gaze and explained amidst the frowns of everyone else: "The eye of my right head can see certain Energy trajectories."
"I can answer your questions using the eye of my right head," Hydra said, revealing why it had opened its right head’s eye, although the crowd still felt offended. Given Hydra’s status and authority, no one dared to question it.
"The source of Onassis’s power you’re all debating about is actually quite simple; it originates from within him. He always possessed this power; it’s just that initially, he didn’t display it," Hydra said, extending its scaly hand and pointing at its right eye: "This is what my eyes tell me."
"Not showing it at first, does the Observer mean he was hiding his capabilities?" Farina asked.
"Perhaps he was hiding his capabilities, or maybe this kind of power can only be exercised by his alternate persona. Either way, there is indeed such a force within him, and I have yet to determine the source of this power," Hydra’s vertical pupils flashed with curiosity.
At that moment, everyone understood why Hydra was so interested in Onassis’s competition; perhaps this was the reason.
After hearing Hydra’s explanation, someone exclaimed: "That being said, Onassis’s championship victory is indeed well-deserved."
"This generation of young people, each one is more monstrous than the last." The speaker appeared to be talking about Onassis, but they couldn’t help glancing at Angel.
"I’m quite eager to know what kind of request he, the champion, will make now?"
This Supernova competition, aside from selecting a Supernova, had a deeper purpose that the public well understood: to compensate for the damage to the reputation of Sky Mechanical City caused by the earlier Purification Garden event. Thus, the rewards for the Supernova competition were very generous; even those who only qualified for the semifinals had the chance to enter the Endless Corridor. Not to mention, the rewards for the champion of the competition are naturally substantial.
In addition to gaining entrance to the Endless Corridor, Onassis would also receive other rich rewards, such as access to the resource vault of the Infinite Battle Tower to select materials. Though much less impressive than the Demonic Materials repository of the Research and Development Institute, it was still quite good for an Apprentice.
Furthermore, he would have the opportunity for a custom Alchemy request, and the ability to request something from the organizers.
This request, although not limited in scope, was a one-time offer. Of course, if the request was too extravagant, the Infinite Battle Tower wouldn’t agree, and the opportunity would be wasted, so the competitors would be sensible about it.
Onassis had already become the champion, and everyone was looking forward to seeing what request he would make of the organizers.
