Chapter 469: Chapter 241_4
Zhou Xuan was a bit disappointed that the Hundred-Eyed High Priest didn’t show up. If he had come, with Lord Jian around, wouldn’t they have taken care of everything in one go?
"No need to rush off; the matter isn’t finished yet."
Lord Jian put away his bow and feathered arrow, picked up two wooden boxes, and declared loudly toward the Heavenly Dome, "You up there, Daoist! You’ve been watching the show for quite a while now, still too scared to make a move?"
In the clouds above, red threads appeared and receded repeatedly, visibly hesitant.
Suddenly,
an aged yet booming voice came from within the swirling mist—White Clothes Divine Arrow, I know your mighty reputation precedes you. I have no intention of making trouble for Zhou Xuan. As long as he hands me back what’s mine, all grievances between us will be settled.
Now Zhou Xuan understood: the God of the Heavenly Dome wanted the Daoist to descend into the mortal world, all for his Wash Away Injustice Talisman.
This talisman, Monk Zhu Jiu once said, belonged to a celestial Daoist.
How did a Daoist’s artifact end up here?
A God must have given it, of course.
As for Zhou Xuan’s Wash Away Injustice Talisman, it wasn’t clear which God it belonged to.
From the future that Lord Jian glimpsed, the Heavenly Daoist was planning to act against the Red Coffin Lady and Zhou Xuan. Naturally, the God wanted to reclaim the talisman.
"Do you have something that belongs to the God of the Heavenly Dome?" Lord Jian asked Zhou Xuan.
"I do."
Zhou Xuan didn’t deny it.
Lord Jian, wearing an expression of exaggerated dismay, lamented, "How could you simply take what belongs to others?"
After chastising Zhou Xuan, he looked up and said, "God of the Heavenly Dome, I’ve confirmed it. The Zhou Family’s Nuo God did indeed take your possession. Come down, descend into the mortal world and claim it yourself."
The clouds parted instantly, allowing sixteen red threads to lower a Daoist toward the earth.
But just as the Daoist was descending a thousand zhang from the ground, Lord Jian brought out his hardwood bow and golden feathered arrow.
"Teng Jian, you wanted me to retrieve it, didn’t you?"
"I did, but whether or not you can take it away depends on your skill."
Rumble—
Thunder rained down from the heavens, a reflection of the God’s fury. He had assumed Lord Jian would concede, not expect to be mocked instead.
"Whether it’s by letting the Daoist descend, sending a Dharma Body to the mortal world, or having a true body possess the Daoist, if you can get past my Teng Jian, then you may take what’s yours.
If I were to forcibly block you from recovering it, I’d be the one being unreasonable."
Lord Jian bent his bow into a crescent moon, and the mountains surrounding East Market Street lent him their might and splendor.
"Jing Country, mortal realm—Gods find it difficult to descend. Without that restriction of heaven and earth, do you really think your eight incense peaks could behave so brazenly?"
"Enough talk. Why don’t you descend and fight? Let’s see if my arrow can strike down a God."
Rumble!
Another bolt of thunder roared from the sky. The already half-descended Daoist was abruptly dragged back into the Heavenly Dome, vanishing without a trace.
"I’m a reasonable person. I gave you the chance to take your possession, but it was you who lacked the courage to claim it. That said, I’ve now imprinted your Daoist’s aura firmly in my memory. If he ever dares to descend into the mortal realm again, he will have to contend with my arrows first."
With that, Lord Jian loosened his grip. The bow and arrow returned to the wooden boxes.
He picked up the two boxes once more and grinned brightly at Zhou Xuan. "Feel free to keep that talisman. That God’s Daoist won’t dare to trouble you again."
Zhou Xuan chuckled and nudged Lord Jian on the shoulder. "I’ve figured it out—Lord Jian, you’re quite the clever one."
When Lord Jian entered East Market Street and gave Mo Tingsheng fifteen minutes to escape, it seemed like he was overconfident.
But in truth, he was leveraging the aura of his Divine Arrow to pressure Mo Tingsheng into contacting the Evil God.
This contact stirred the Evil God’s greed, which Lord Jian immediately detected.
Now, on the surface, Lord Jian appeared to be reasoning with the God, but his true goal had been to provoke the God-level Daoist into descending.
As the Daoist descended halfway into the mortal realm, Lord Jian etched the Daoist’s aura into his memory. From this point forward, if that aura appeared again in Jing Country’s mortal world, he would shoot first without hesitation.
Thus, he had removed any lingering threats for Zhou Xuan.
"Wisdom may be overstating it," Lord Jian said humbly. "This world, vast as it may be, cannot escape the principle of reason. As long as we are reasonable, we can go anywhere without fear."
Lord Jian’s words left Zhou Xuan stunned,
Right, right, right—Lord Jian, you’re the most reasonable person ever.
The three of them prepared to head back.
Zhou Xuan hefted Mo Tingsheng onto the Big Black Donkey,
but as soon as he mounted the donkey, the creature grew agitated. It raised its front hooves, shaking Mo Tingsheng off. Then, it turned to bite Mo Tingsheng’s pant leg and expertly began pulling it down...
"Not now! What’s wrong with you? Why can’t you control yourself?"
Zhou Xuan quickly wrestled Mo Tingsheng out of the Big Black Donkey’s grasp.
Mo Tingsheng had already said that if he couldn’t contact the Hundred-Eyed High Priest within a few hours, the kidnappers’ thirty-year plan would be set into motion.
Time was running out, yet here the donkey was, still obsessing over "beauty"?
"Let’s go home, I’ll feed you straw."
Enticed by the promise of food, the Big Black Donkey finally calmed down,
though as it trotted along, it occasionally glanced back at Mo Tingsheng with a flirtatious look, making Mo Tingsheng’s scalp tingle.
The three returned to the time-space passage, and under the Big Black Donkey’s hooves, white light flickered once again.
Zhou Xuan asked Lord Jian, "Lord Jian, when the Daoist descended, he was in a state without incense or fire. Doesn’t that mean that even if that God-level Daoist successfully descended, he still wouldn’t have been able to deal with me and the Red Coffin Lady?"
"When a Daoist descends, it’s true they are without incense or fire. But the Daoist can serve as a vessel to invite a God to possess their body. Once a God takes possession, the Daoist’s incense offerings can immediately surge to eight incense peaks."
Lord Jian smirked and added, "However, if a God enters a Daoist’s body and is killed by people like us, then that God would fall as well. So, it’s not entirely a safe move for them. Gods don’t take that kind of risk lightly."
