Chapter 44: The Wedding (Part 2)
[Music Recommendation: "Darkside" by Neoni]
As my body shook in so much anger and my breathing got harder, I asked Yoon-Ah again in a trembling voice.
"W-Who touched this?" I said, showing her the shawl in my hands.
Though panicking, she answered me hastily.
"T-There was a man who helped me earlier. The wind blew my shawl, and it got caught up in a flower arch, and then—"
"Where?" I snapped.
Her trembling fingers pointed outside, towards the garden. As soon as she lifted her fingers, I ran in its direction. My hands still clenched on the white shawl, marking it with the great rage seething in my heart.
’I’ll kill him. I’LL KILL HIM!’ I chanted over and over in my mind.
I didn’t care how long the gown I was wearing was or how high the heels were. I couldn’t care less who I bumped into trying to make my way toward the garden.
I was desperate.
In fact, even that word failed to describe the depth of emotions I was feeling right at that very moment.
’Where are you? I’m going to kill you when I see you. You’re going to pay for what you did! How dare you play with innocent lives?! How dare you trap my father in your web of lies! HOW DARE YOU?!’
My eyes searched and searched everywhere, looking for that familiar silhouette. I could still clearly remember what he looked like. He might have grown older, but his face wouldn’t change that easily. No. Even if he changed his face, I would still recognize his scent, his voice, and the way he talks. I would NEVER forget it.
Back in Junior High, while I was trying so hard to find closure on my father’s death, I met "him" by accident. Like a devil who observes his prey, he visited our neighborhood one day. He didn’t see me, but I saw him—as clear as the morning sky!
I was on my way home that day when a huge van stopped by in the corner. The car windows opened for a moment, revealing that wretched man’s visage. Aside from a more mature appearance, he looked the same—with eyes that mocked everyone he sees—a real devil in disguise. He stared at my mother from across the street, smiling and probably amused at what he had done.
"We should go now, sir," one of his guards said.
"Aww, too bad. I’m still enjoying myself," he replied with his evil voice.
The range of emotions I felt that day... I couldn’t even begin to describe it. Seeing a person who you thought was dead all these years, alive and kicking as if nothing happened.
After everything that happened...
After my father was already accused of murdering him...
After he was sentenced to death despite being innocent of killing a person who turned out to be f*cking ALIVE!
’Where the hell are you?!’ my mind screamed over and over.
But no matter how hard I searched, I couldn’t find him.
All that was left was myself having a hard time breathing and tears that fell from my eyes nonstop. I didn’t know what else to think or how I could calm down. I just so badly wanted to get back at him and kill that wretched person! He’s the one who should die! Not my father! How dare he do this to us?
"Hu-hu-hu-hu..."
Unable to find him, my heart burst into tears. There were many people behind me, seeing me like this, but I didn’t care anymore. My mind’s a mess. How badly I wanted him to pay for what he did. I wanted him to... sniff...
As I slowly succumbed to the familiar darkness and depression, I felt a hand grab my shoulders, and arms wrapped me gently in an embrace. His comfortable warmth made me cry all the more, and I couldn’t stop it.
"Ye-Ji’ya, it’s me. Calm down."
It was Eun-Woo.
He patted my back and caressed my head.
"Shhh... It’s going to be okay."
And for some reason I... cried and cried and cried.
"Hu-hu-hu-hu..."
Because of that, the ceremony was delayed and pushed into the night. The staff explained that I just happened to remember my father and felt emotional. Meanwhile, Eun-Woo, Yoon-Ah, and my mother tried to calm me down inside my room. Eun-Woo didn’t let go of me until my body stopped trembling and my breathing normalized. When it did, he wiped my face with tears and kissed my forehead.
"Do you want to rest? We can push the ceremony tomorrow or another week," he asked me in his most gentle voice, sounding so worried about me.
Was he feeling sorry for me? Did he know about my father? Mythos wasn’t one to share, but given that we’re in a partnership, they could share censored details about it.
Yoon-Ah and my mother were so worried as well and kept asking me questions. But my mind was somewhere else.
Once again, I was reminded of my obsession—the reason why I joined Mythos in the first place—it was to avenge my father. I might have enjoyed this facade a little too much. I shouldn’t forget my main goal. And it’s to kill that devil!
A few minutes more, and I finally calmed down. I told Eun-Woo to continue the wedding and that I was fine. After much persuasion, we finally proceeded with the wedding ceremony.
And so, under the enchanting light of the night sky, we made our vows to each other.
"Do you, Jeon Eun-Woo," the priest asked, "accept Kim Ye-Ji, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do you part?"
"Yes, I do."
"And do you, Kim Ye-Ji, accept Jeon Eun-Woo, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do you part?"
"Yes, I do."
With much determination, I uttered those words.
’I have to finish this mission as soon as possible, receive my prize, and hunt that devil incarnate.
’There’s no time to hesitate or dilly dally.
’I will have my revenge no matter what.
’Just wait for me... I will come and bring hell to you.
’And I won’t stop until I’ve done it.
’UNTIL DEATH DO US PART!’
