Chapter 37: Selene (Part 1)

Since we had frequented this area for the past few weeks, I had already memorized the map of the surrounding neighborhood. By the car’s direction, the position of police stations they would need to avoid, and the enforcers nearby, there’s only one path they could take—the road towards the tunnel!

"Fae, enable mode Umbra," I commanded my brooch while I ran fast and jumped from one roof to another. "Range—within 3 kilometers radius."

Mode Umbra—it’s a command we give our brooch to help us travel incognito within a specified location. While in this mode, all cameras, audio, or any tracking devices nearby would be under Mythos’ power, and they would hack each that captured our figure, altering them in the process. This was how Mythos had remained a secret agency for decades. And this way, we only need to be wary of people who might see us. Given the training we had, though, it’s easy for any agent to walk within the shadows.

"Enabling mode Umbra...," Fae responded. "Umbra mode activated."

Soon enough, I caught up with the car that had taken the child. Good thing I remembered everything about it—from its fake plate number to the features of the car and the slight graze on its bumper.

As opposed to my initial thinking, the car didn’t go straight to the tunnel but turned towards another alley. I quickly scanned around to check where they were going, but they all led to a dead end.

’What’s the meaning of this? There’s only the back of the shops nearby, so where would they....’

It was then that I noticed a garage opening from afar.

’They’re switching cars! Woah, how clever of them, huh? But you’re not getting your way!’

Crouching from the rooftop just a few meters away from them, I took out the foldable bow and arrow from the back pocket of my suit. If knives and swords could be folded into a smaller size, Mythos also invented a way to make bows and arrows portable.

I was not allowed to carry guns with me while we were doing this marriage act, so all I could bring were weapons like these that wouldn’t be detected easily by security and metal detectors wherever we go. Despite its size and materials, still, it’s a very capable weapon that could kill anyone it’s aimed at.

After setting it up in mere seconds, I aimed at the tires of the moving car.

3... 2... 1... Shoot!

PSSSSHHHTTTT!!!

The front tire flattened in an instant, making the car move wayward and bump into the dumpster.

This time, I pulled out another arrow and aimed at the remaining tires to make sure they couldn’t get away. I also shot the decoy car hiding in the garage.

PSHOOK! PSHOOK! PSHOOK!

My arrows shot one after another, alerting the kidnappers. Seeing the direction of the arrows, they spotted me and pointed their guns. Despite that, I knew they couldn’t shoot. If they did, it would only be a matter of minutes before the police come in, making it more impossible for them to escape.

"Who are you?! Show yourself!" one of them shouted.

I’m not stupid. Why would I show myself to you all just like that?

Taking advantage of the shadows once more, I slid down the roof while creating noise on the other side. I threw a rock in my opposite direction so they wouldn’t hear my steps. The rooftop I was on was a bit of a noisy one, so I had to be careful.

Thinking I was on the east side, they hurried towards that spot. I could hear their footsteps stomping on the ground—something very unprofessional of them to do.

While they busied themselves with finding where I was, I stealthily went into the car. From the sidewall of the shop to the back of the carton boxes scattered around, up to the back of the car. With a little tinkering, I unlocked the door, and there she was—the poor little girl.

The cute girl, who was probably only around five years of age, cried so hard. Her mouth was duct-taped, and her tiny hands tied at her back. Anger rose within me once more. But this was no time to be overcome by emotion.

Raising my forefinger, I gestured for her to be silent and follow me. Trusting me, she followed along quietly until she got out of the car. I untied her hands and uncovered her mouth. Then, I waved my hands towards the gap between the dumpster and the side of the car and told her...

"Lie down here on your stomach and cover your ears. No matter what, don’t raise your head or run unless I tell you, okay?" I gently whispered to her since she looked so scared. She needed assurance of her safety. "Don’t worry, this unnie (older sister) will definitely save you."

The little girl did as I told her. Now that she’s hiding, it’s time for me to end these mother***kers.

I took out the two daggers on each side of my thighs. It’s another weapon from Mythos—thin but very sharp and deadly.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

I walked towards them stealthily, barely making sounds in each of my footsteps. My murderous glare counted each of their heads—one, two, three... ten in total. As I counted, my head was already strategizing how I would subdue them.

Lounging forward, I dashed towards the two nearest ones and sliced the ligament on their knees to disable them from running away. I slashed again, targeting their hands that held the gun. When they dropped it, I immediately caught it, unloaded the magazines, and threw them afar.

"AAAAAHH!!!" their screams reverberated in my ears as their blood splattered like raindrops in the air.

In an instant, they were injured without even seeing who it was that attacked them—a normal skill of any Mythos agent.

"What the—what happened? ACK!"

SLASH! SLASH! Another one down.

"Who—ARGH!"

SLASH! SLASH! And another.

Terrified by the unseen, the remaining men started shooting. I rolled towards the wall and took shelter in the shadow. Switching to my bow and arrow, I shot them back.

PSHOOK! PSHOOK! PSHOOK!

They screamed once more, like the wimps they were.

Seven down. Three more to go. Now, these three were more alert than the others. They were probably the leaders of their pack.

’Leaders, huh?’ I scoffed. ’That doesn’t matter... for I AM SELENE.’
