Chapter 52: 52. A call

"Can I even still be called the same person?"

The question setlled in slence as no answer came No answer came—just the faint hum of system notifications echoing at the edge of his mind.

Memory was identity.

Memory was the only thing that proved he had ever existed.

And the system and the cruel game world wanted to strip even that from him.

Licht clenched his fists.

"I don’t care what this system wants."

"I don’t care about quests, or stats, or saving this damn world."

He stared out toward the edge of the horizon, lightning flickering faintly in his irises.

"I will finish this.""I will beat this world to its knees."

His voice dropped to a whisper, venom laced in every syllable:

"I’d rather rot in a nursing home on Earth than forget who I truly was."

Living with a sort of completely different memory, how is that any different from death

Licht’s concern was completely genuine this time. If Charlotte killed herself before Licht could syphon some easy enlightenment points from her, he would be heartbroken.

It was like seeing money burning in front of your eyes

Charlotte didn’t respond at first. She turned to the dragon and gently stroked its massive snout.

"You helped save me... again."

The dragon tilted its head, almost curious.

Charlotte stepped forward, eyes wide.

"When we fell off the tower ...I thought I saw something catch us in the fall. It was you, wasn’t it?"

The dragon said nothing, but its presence alone confirmed the truth.

Licht stepped into his dorm, not even bothering to rest. He pulled out his phone and made a call.

His phone barely rang twice before it was picked up.

"Young Master."

"Ashford," Licht said, sitting at the edge of the bed. "I’m going to need you to send me the Valtier family technique files."

There was a brief silence on the line.

"If you want them now, clan rules only allow A-rank techniques to be sent digitally. Anything above that—" explained Ashford

"I know the rules." Licht cut in. "Just send the A-grade ones for now."

"Understood." replied Ashford "If you need anything beyond, I can come and deliver them in person"

"I was going to ask you to come anyway," Licht added. "But not for the techniques."

Ashford hesitated. "Young Master... I can’t keep cleaning up after you. Your standing in the family is already shaky. If I leave to clean things up, they might trace this.."

Licht’s expression soured.

He knew what Ashford meant by cleaning up. It was just doing Licht’s dirty work. Clearing up bodies, destroying evidence and silencing

"Relax," Licht muttered. "This time, there’s nothing to bury. Just come to the capital, and if they track your movements... even better."

That made Ashford pause. "You want them to know you’re moving?"

"I’m done hiding." Licht’s voice was cold, resolute. "Let them watch and let them come."

Ashford exhaled slowly. "I want to ask what you’re planning, but..."

"Don’t." Licht cut him off sharply. "If you’re really on my side, just do what I ask. Read the messages I sent and complete the tasks. No questions."

A tense silence lingered.

Then, finally, Ashford’s voice came through.

"Understood. I’ll leave immediately, Young Master."

Licht hung up, staring at the screen for a long moment before tossing the phone aside.

...

Thousands of miles away—

The most trusted right hand of the Valtier family stood among a sea of blood and broken bodies. The think and coppery scent of death clung in the air enough that it would make any normal person that walked in dizzy

Ashford stood calmly in this hellish landscape, and just wiped some crimson stans from his gloves as his phone vibrated.

Picking it up, he glanced at the screen and watched the video and details that Licht sent with him

his expression morphed from one od disbelief into one of pride, shock and awe before finally couldn’t

"Hahaha... My Young Master is finally showing his true colours to the world ."

His joy was cold and unsettling.

Still grinning, he walked over to one of the few survivors: a man gagged and barely clinging to life. Ashford crouched beside him, removed the gag, and looked him in the eye.

"My Young Master has finally begun showing the greatness I knew was buried deep inside of him. So, I’m in a good mood today. Tell me what I want to hear..." He tilted his head. "And I’ll end your suffering."

The man coughed violently, gasping for breath, voice trembling with desperation.

"I—I don’t know anything! Please! I swear, I don’t know this had ties to the Valtier family!"

Ashford sighed, disappointed.

"It’s such a good occasion. I really didn’t want to spill any more blood."

The man’s eyes lit up, clinging to hope.

"But..." Ashford whispered, brushing dust from his coat, "Why did you have to disappoint me?"

"No—no, wait! I—"

Snap.

With the flick of Ashford’s finger, a spark of mana exploded from his fingertip, piercing cleanly between the man’s brows. A dull thud followed as the body slumped lifelessly to the blood-slick floor, but Ashford didn’t spare it a glance.

He turned and walked away, unbothered by the wide-eyed group of survivors frozen in shock.

They’d watched helplessly as their gang leader and all who stood up to resist fell like livestock and yet their horrible time was only just beginning

Without pausing, Ashford gave the final order:

"Finish them all. Sweep this place and leave no living creature behind."

At first, the survivors thought Ashford was talking to himself.

But then a layered reply came whispering in from all directions

"Yes, Captain."

The words echoed through the shadows like a curse as dozens of crimson eyes blinked open in the dark, lighting the void like dying embers.

And then—

Chaos.

With a blur of movement, Flesh was ripped apart like parchment as screams lasted only for a few seconds before being cruelly smothered

There was no fight going on.Just a one sided massacre.

That night was one covered in blood.
