Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Team Assignment

"The test will be used for placement of teams, as you have already been told. So it is in your best interest that you perform to your utmost capabilities," the professor announced after a lengthy theory class, elucidating the weaknesses of vampires and certain beast races, like werewolves and nymphs.

Dong

A bell resounded through the theater-like room, and the professor snapped his book shut with finality, adjusting the glasses perched on the bridge of his nose.

"Head for Paragon Hall," he said simply.

Everyone’s face twisted in horror.

"Of fucking course, why not just kill me?" one student groaned.

Voices of displeasure sounded throughout the hall, and literally NO ONE had seen this coming. Not even Asher with his extensive knowledge of the game had expected this. This had never happened in the original storyline at all.

Something’s changed, he realized with growing unease.

[Perhaps your interference has affected the future you know,] came the familiar voice in his head, and it made him frown even deeper. This wasn’t totally unexpected, but a change in the plot at this level was completely unprecedented.

I have to be careful... if the plot diverges too far from the intended path, I would lose my major advantage—knowing the future, he thought with mounting concern.

The implications were staggering. Every carefully laid plan, every strategic decision he’d made based on his foreknowledge of events, could now be completely useless. He felt like a chess player who’d suddenly discovered the board had been rearranged while he wasn’t looking.

"Let’s go," he heard beside him.

Asher turned to find Tracy with her usual... carefree attitude.

Hmm, he mused. Could it be she was already aware of this? Most people would dismiss it as her typical lackadaisical behavior, but he wasn’t just anyone—he wouldn’t dismiss a possibility simply because a convenient explanation existed. She definitely knew something.

Perhaps Castor did something. Come to think of it, they were headed somewhere yesterday—some place in Elflame. According to Leon during his outburst, it was something important they needed to be there for, he analyzed, then decided to milk the information directly from the source herself.

"Alright," he said, standing up. Tracy grinned for some reason.

"How about you be a gentleman and carry my bag~" she teased playfully.

To her complete surprise, he actually took the bag from her and slung it over his shoulder. It would have looked stylish on him if the bag wasn’t designed specifically with female preferences in mind—it was currently the trending accessory for senior class girls.

"Let’s go," he said, to which she nodded absently. He really did it, she thought internally while managing to keep a calm expression, though her heart did a small flip at the unexpected gesture.

They were just leaving the hall when suddenly, "HEY! New guy!" a voice called out to them.

Asher and Tracy turned to find a young man with light blue hair and pale brown eyes walking toward them, flanked by another young man to his right and a girl to his left. The trio moved with the confident stride of those accustomed to being noticed.

"Yes?" Asher raised an eyebrow at the approaching group.

"I was just informed by the professor that you’d be included in our team," the blue-haired young man announced, now standing before them.

"Sam?" Tracy narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "Wait, your team already had enough members. Wouldn’t that be unfair to the other teams for you to have EXTRA members?"

"Tsk," Sam clicked his tongue in annoyance. "Our guy got poached by Albion Academy, and we just found out at the start of the semester."

"Albion?" Tracy looked genuinely shocked, her usual composure cracking for a moment.

"I know, right?" Sam sighed heavily. "I don’t even understand how it happened. Well, that doesn’t matter now. You said your name was... Asher, right?"

Asher nodded. "Yeah, it is."

"You need to come with us. I have to test your skills so I can make proper use of your talents," Sam explained matter-of-factly.

Asher nodded in understanding, but before he could respond, Tracy erupted.

"Wait! You can’t just take him away! We were going somewhere, damn it!"

She looked genuinely irritated as Asher removed her bag and handed it back to her.

"Well, too bad. We have a test to prepare for—a test that’s only hours away," Sam replied unsympathetically.

"So where are we headed?" Asher asked, already mentally shifting gears.

"Not far from here. There’s really no time for anything too fancy," said the black-haired young man with green streaks, his emerald eyes appraising Asher with obvious interest.

"Alright, lead the way," Asher agreed.

Sam nodded and headed for the door, the group falling into step behind him.

"Sorry about that," Asher said to Tracy with a small, apologetic smile, "but I guess we can go on that date some other time."

Tracy sighed in resignation. "It’s fine," she said, then processed what she’d just heard. "Wait! When did it become a date?"

But the young man had already hurried off and caught up with his supposed teammates, leaving her standing there with her mouth slightly agape.

"Tsk," she clicked her tongue in annoyance, though the subtle blush on her cheeks was telling enough. "Don’t tell me he’s already fallen for me..."

She stood there for a moment, then broke into a grin as she began fantasizing.

Meanwhile, Asher walked alongside his supposing teammates, his mind racing with possibilities. The plot was definitely changing, and he needed to stay three steps ahead if he wanted to maintain any advantage in this increasingly unpredictable game.
