Chapter 69: Chapter 68: The crazy[GTG]
Fourteen days had crawled by since I’d made the dubious decision to trust Scarlet. To my surprise, things hadn’t gone completely south. She maintained a facade of docility and obedience, eerily reminiscent of Helen, but there was an underlying intensity in her gaze that hinted at a hair-trigger temper just waiting to be unleashed.
However, like with Helen, I found myself being drawn to her, just hope I don’t fall too deep like wih Helen.
That aside though, the arrangement still had an unbelievable great deal of perks. Whenever we encountered another candidate, Scarlet would erupt into a whirlwind of violence, reducing the unfortunate soul to a whimpering puddle before graciously bestowing the finishing blow upon me. It was an unexpected turn of events, especially on the first day when she’d dispatched a student with effortless brutality, then transferred the points directly to my account.
Apparently, teammates could share points. A useful loophole, indeed.
However, this continued for so long that I’d attempted to intervene. The points, I argued, were better served in her possession. Her response, as expected, was a dismissive wave of her hand. She claimed to have stockpiled enough points to maintain her ranking regardless. It was an unsettling boast, a chilling testament to the sheer number of lives she must have snuffed out to be so confident.
The logic of it all escaped me. We were leaving the academy after the exams, or so she claimed. So why rack up additional points if our days here were numbered? My suggestion to find a cozy nook with a steady food supply was met with a resolute refusal. Her priority, she asserted, was locating Lyra – another piece of the puzzle I couldn’t quite grasp. Apparently, a duo offered better protection than her alone. But that begged the question of just what exactly transpired between the three of us in my forgotten past? It was a question that gnawed at the edges of my mind.
But just as a semblance of normalcy, however unsettling, began to settle in, fate, as it often does, intervened. The last person I ever wanted to see materialized from the shadows: the pink-haired harpy.
"My little plaything," she purred, her voice dripping with saccharine sweetness that masked a deadly undercurrent. "Fancy meeting you here."
We were scouring a dilapidated building for supplies when she materialized in front of me, a jarring splash of color in the dust-laden gloom.
"Crazy bitch," a primal snarl ripped from my throat as I ripped my katana from its sheath.
"Still feisty, I see," she quipped, a mocking smile replacing the feigned sweetness. She cradled her cheek, her face turning flush red as an apple.
A surge of hatred pulsed through me, vivid memories of her past torment flashing before my eyes.
Just as I channeled darkness into my blade, a sickening feeling of paralysis washed over me. Invisible tendrils of wind, her doing no doubt, constricted my body, rendering me a frozen statue.
"No, no, no, his time, you won’t escape so easily~," she hissed, her voice laced with vindictive glee. Then, in a blur of movement that defied comprehension, she stood before me. Her hands, cold and clammy, cupped my face, squeezing with an almost perverse affection.
Against my will, a traitorous shiver ran down my spine and I felt my body quiver. Damn this cursed body!
"I’ve been flitting from one weakling to another, collecting points," she purred, a manic glint in her eyes. "But none have captivated me quite like you. Loneliness gnawed at me, reminding me of the pleasure I derived from... manipulating you. I couldn’t bear it any longer. And now," her voice rose to a crescendo, "now that I’ve found you, do you really think I’ll let you go?!"
Her eyes pulsed with an unsettling pink light, swirling hypnotically. A wave of terror washed over me. The familiar sensation of my will being hijacked, the relentless barrage of pop-up notifications – [Upgrade]... [Failed]... [Upgrade]... – it was a mental assault designed to break me entirely.
But just as I teetered on the brink, a torrent of water sliced through the air, carving a deep gash in the ground where the pink-haired menace had stood moments before. My control returned in a rush, the world snapping back into focus. I crumbled to the ground, gasping for breath, only to find Scarlet’s arms wrapped protectively around me.
"Are you alright?" she demanded, her purple eyes blazing with a fury that eclipsed even the pink-haired demon’s manic glint.
"Yeah," I croaked, my throat dry as sandpaper. "I think so."
"Who... how dare you interrupt me?!" the pink-haired girl screeched, her voice shrill with frustration. "I was so close, just a bit.... a bit more, and he was going to be mine!" she shrieked, yanking at her hair, the pink strands whipping around her face like angry tentacles.
"Who is she?" Scarlet inquired, her voice surprisingly calm considering the her supposed obsessive nature that I feared. Perhaps I’d misjudged her earlier composure.
"Nobody important," I spat, opting for honesty since there was no point in sugarcoating the situation. "Just a deranged stalker who’s been trying to brainwash me since the exams started."
A flicker of something akin to possessiveness crossed Scarlet’s features, fleeting but undeniable. "Did... did she hurt you?" she pressed, her voice a low rumble that sent a tremor through the floorboards beneath us.
"Yeah," I admitted, the memory of the pink-haired girl’s touch still sending shivers down my spine. "She did."
The air crackled with a sudden shift in energy. Scarlet’s entire body tensed, her fists clenching so tightly her knuckles turned white. "I’ll kill you," she growled, her voice barely a whisper but laced with a terrifying finality.
Then, as if conjured from thin air, enormous lances of water materialized around her. With a flick of her wrist, she sent them hurtling towards the pink-haired girl with a force that could level mountains. Half the building groaned in protest as it crumbled under the watery assault.
"Haha... haha," a hollow, humorless laugh escaped my lips.
Just how powerful were these girls, anyway?!
