With the two women’s interruption, it was as if the spell in the air was shattered to pieces.

[666: Host! Host, can you hear 666?!]

’Daddyyyy, wake up!!!’

Two voices simultaneously blasted his ear drums at the same time, almost sending his ears ringing. He hissed. [Don’t shout in my ears.]

Lu Yizhou stared at his own hand that was midway from reaching the utensil with increasing dread. It would only be stupid for him to drink or eat something in this place when the quest demanded him to survive, that was common sense. Lu Yizhou was positive that he did not feel hunger either. So what was this hand doing?!

—No, at that moment, he did not even think. His mind was utterly blank. It was as if... he had been bewitched.

He clenched his fists. [What the fuck happened to me?]

Ozzie had been curling herself as small as possible behind the curtain of Lu Yizhou’s long hair ever since they entered the mansion. As a rare familiar, she had the ability to deflect attention away from herself. As a result, nobody would question Lu Yizhou even when they saw the cat in his arms, aside from those with particularly sharp senses like Olivia. But she had stayed closely by Lu Yizhou’s side all this time, her weight a solid presence that anchored Lu Yizhou to reality. She cried out, ’Daddy, that was so scary! All of a sudden, we can’t reach you and no matter how loud we shout, you can’t seem to hear us! It’s as if someone is controlling your body!’

Lu Yizhou pursed his lips in thought. As it turned out, he was indeed bewitched back then. But why whom...?

His gaze drifted to the man to his right. Luca still had that tight-lipped smile on his face, looking impeccable as always that if Lu Yizhou had not sat so close to him, he wouldn’t have realized that something was off!

"It’s okay, I understand," the man replied smoothly with a smile that did not reach his eyes. "Please take a seat, ladies. We will be starting dinner now."

The two women bowed once again before filling the two leftover seats. So, Lu Yizhou’s guess was right. There would be seven doctors each batch who would then stay in this residence for a week. It was not a mere paranoia now. He was certain that the number must have meant something.

[Thank you.] He conveyed to 666 and Ozzie.

He felt Ozzie nuzzling closer to his neck and purring softly. ’Daddy, I don’t like that man.’

’Why?’

’I don’t know... He just gives me a bad feeling,’ Ozzie mumbled, perplexed. ’My gut feeling told me that something is off with him but I can’t put my finger on it. He actually gives off a vibe similar to Mommy. Of course, he is the most unpleasant one!’

Lu Yizhou gave a thoughtful hum. He had guessed that Luca might be behind the terror that reigned inside the Knox Family, but that was just a baseless assumption. In the first place, Luca was the head of the family and Lu Yizhou could tell through the painting outside that the gentleness oozing out of his eyes when he looked at his wife and daughter had not been faked. If he was really the mastermind, then what motive did he have to harm his own family members? It was not logical.

All these questions led him to the starting point. He had to quickly find out what had happened in this family ten years ago. Only then would he be able to obtain the answers to all the mysteries.

Now that the spell had been lifted, Lu Yizhou did not feel hungry anymore. Even the smell that wafted to his nose wasn’t as appetizing as before. Instead, there was a stale odor that caused him to wrinkle his nose. What about the others? He lifted his eyelids to see Ji Yan energetically slicing his steak into small pieces with ravenous glint in his eyes.

Lu Yizhou was rendered speechless. Of course, what did he expect from this happy-go-lucky protagonist?

The previous batch of doctors did not have a problem with digging into the food. All of them had started to eat with a blissful look on their faces. As for his teammates though...

From Lu Yizhou’s position, he could just catch sight of Ailín and Olivia who were sitting adjacent to him. Ailín had already finished the second glass of wine and was currently asking for a third. He did not seem interested in the food in front of him at all. On the other hand, Olivia looked mildly sick. The hands she was using to hold the utensils were slightly shaking.

After observing everyone, Lu Yizhou returned his gaze to the steak in front of him. If they wanted to complete the side quest, should they eat the food or not? Was this a trap? This was just a question of ’yes’ or ’no’. The possibility of failure was 50%. How troublesome. Lu Yizhou heaved out a quiet sigh as he started to cut his steak slowly.

As he was lost in thought, his motion caused the tip of his knife to bump against the potato wedges and sausages, sending them rolling to the edge of the plate. When Lu Yizhou poked them back, he almost choked on air when he saw a round nail in one of the sausages! Yes, that was a fucking nail stuck to the sausage! Horrifying realization dawned on him as he felt sickness in the pit of his stomach.

T–The sausage... Don’t tell him that it was a fucking finger!

Keeping a face as calm as possible, he rolled his sausages back and forth and inspected them closely. Two of them were normal sausages while the other one... the more Lu Yizhou stared at it, the more it resembled a human’s finger, one that was fleshy and juicy. Goodness... he might have drunk human’s blood at some point in his life — even though it was only his lover’s — but to ask him to eat a finger? Ugh, no fucking way!

[666: *retch* Why isn’t 666’s screen mosaicked?! 666 is not strong enough to get through this!]

’Ewwww, so disgusting!!’ Ozzie shrieked almost hysterically.

666 and Ozzie’s retching sounds echoed atop of one another in his mind, causing Lu Yizhou to feel even more nauseous. [Shut up, 666!]

[666: Why are you only targeting 666 alone?! This is not fair! QAQ]

’It’s because I am Daddy’s girl, stupid!’

[666: Y–You’re the stupid one! 666 is the most intelligent, sensible and handsome system in the universe!]

Lu Yizhou heaved out a long-suffering sigh and subtly scanned the other dishes on the table. The cream and mushroom soup looked normal in one glance. But the meatball sandwich— holy fuck, there were three meatballs for each person and one of them was an eyeball! Lu Yizhou almost let out a strangled noise from his throat when Ji Yan’s eye meatball stared right at him. Was it only his imagination or did the eyeball just blink at him?!

A huge plate of cold soba noodle salad was placed in the middle of the table. Lu Yizhou stared with increasing horror as one of the previous batch doctors picked a small portion into her plate and started to munch on it happily. Wake up, Missy! What you are eating is a mouthful of wriggly thin worms!

"Is there something wrong, Miss?" Luca’s voice suddenly sounded beside him. His eyes flashed with a sharp glint. "Is the food not to your liking?"

Lu Yizhou swallowed audibly. Luca had said previously that the cuisines were a specialty from his hometown. That was already a subtle sign that he wanted everyone to taste and praise it. If Lu Yizhou did not eat, would he cause Luca’s trust point to plummet back into minus fifty or worse, even lower than that?

Fuck, was it what the quest mean by surviving the dinner?!
