Chapter 283: 6.43 For My Sake?
Jillian wanted the whole world to pray for him instead of the God of Light.
"Think about it." His golden eyes twinkled in barely restrained excitement. If he couldn’t offer his help in defeating the enemy, then what if he were to prevent them from coming altogether? The more Jillian thought about it, the better his idea seemed. "The more people pray for you, the stronger you will be. Isn’t power what you need the most, Regius? Without anyone praying to the God of Light, then he has no chance to be awakened from his slumber! We will be hitting two birds with one stone!"
Lu Yizhou let out a hum in response to Jillian’s suggestion, albeit inwardly he was feeling very perplexed. Too much power might make him lose control, just like what happened to Regius in the original plot. Certainly, Lu Yizhou wouldn’t become greedy but he couldn’t detail what would happen if he received too many prayers in a short span of time. With the strength he had right now, there was no way he could be corrupted into an Evil God. But what about later...?
Darkness couldn’t exist without light. Only people who had seen the light could know how dark it was without. But if the light ceased to exist, could darkness still be deemed as ’dark’? No, it would become a void. A black hole that would swallow the whole world.
Lu Yizhou could already see where this would end. But looking into Jillian’s hopeful eyes, Lu Yizhou found himself tongue-tied, uncertain where he should start from.
Izher showed up in the nick of time and plopped himself down beside Lu Yizhou, leaning snugly against him under Jillian’s glare. "How sure are you that this is going to work?" He drawled in a bored tone. Lu Yizhou suspected he did it on purpose knowing how it would rile Jillian up every single time. "Can you guarantee that everyone’s prayers will go to Regius?"
At the same time, he also spoke into Lu Yizhou’s mind, softer and more serious. [What are you afraid of, Lu Yizhou?]
Lu Yizhou’s heart skipped a beat. Could Izher sense his hesitation?
He felt... unhinged, as if the control was on the verge of slipping away from his fingers and once it did, it would be gone forever. He recalled how easy it was in the first world. He played with everyone like chess pieces, calculated each move with such precision that he was always ten steps ahead of the others. The longer he went on, the more difficult it was. Of course, Lu Yizhou knew the reason why.
It was because he proceeded with too much caution. In the past, he had always fought with abandon, because he had nothing to lose, because he knew no one would mourn for him even if he died.
But now he had become weaker and softer, because his heart and body were no longer his alone. Because he had started to learn how to love, and it took everything in him not to fuck everything up like how he always did. "Everything I touch dies and wither and I bring nothing but pain and suffering to those around me," Izher had said to him when they first met. Lu Yizhou had wanted to laugh; it was ironic how similar they were. Maybe that’s why they were so attracted to each other.
Lu Yizhou was afraid, because no matter how he thought about it, the endgame was the same. He would end up hurting Jillian one way or another. His mission was to save Jillian, but if he was the very source of Jillian’s demise, what should he do...?
Izher fell silent, apparently picking up on his line of thoughts. Then he reached out to hold Lu Yizhou’s hand, squeezing. [Foolish.] He muttered in a small voice.
"Are you two having a conversation with your eyes again?" Jillian narrowed his eyes in suspicion.
"Oh, you have no idea." Izher turned to him and beamed, light and flirtatious as he brought Lu Yizhou’s knuckles to his lips. "We are connected by body and soul. It’s something you won’t be able to fathom until the day you die."
Jillian bristled, fur standing and clearly seconds away from exploding but in the end, he managed to restrain his anger to steer the conversation back. "You haven’t answered my question. Also, there’s something I have to ask. Now that Ernoul has died, can you lift the plague in the country, Izher?"
Such impudence! Izher fumed inwardly. Izher? He was a fucking God! How dare this human call him directly by name?
Alas, before he could give a nasty remark, Lu Yizhou squeezed his hand, half placating and half warning. Izher grumbled under his breath, something about ’playing favorites’ and ’old one discarded’ causing Lu Yizhou to smile secretly. He knew Izher just liked to complain without any real heat in it.
"I can’t." Izher snapped with a harrumph. "Even though I am the one who casted the curse, I am unable to lift it, okay? My purpose is to bestow punishment or lessons to humans. If they pass the test, then maybe the Goddess of Luck will be smiling at them and then they will miraculously invent the cure. But if they don’t, well..." He shrugged. "They will be wiped out until no one remains."
Jillian tensed. Veins throbbed on his forehead and this time he couldn’t resist hissing. "It’s all your fault. If you don’t exist, then this mess will not happen!"
Izher laughed, sharp and biting. "That’s right, I am—"
"Enough." Lu Yizhou cut in, the obvious anger in his voice caused the human-God pair to click their jaws shut, stunned. Lu Yizhou had never truly been mad at his lover before, loved him too much to do so but this time, he couldn’t help it. If this went on, Jillian and Izher’s relationship would become sourer and sourer and that was the last thing Lu Yizhou wanted to see.
Seeing colors draining from their faces, Lu Yizhou suddenly felt drained, the anger quickly dissipating, leaving him with only exhaustion and helplessness. He held his forehead exasperatedly. "Jillian, you are not allowed to blame Izher when he has no choice to begin with," Jillian averted his eyes away with a huff. "...and Izher, you are not allowed to disparage yourself. None of this is your fault. The two of you matter so much to me. Can you try not to hate each other too much?" Lu Yizhou tried again when all he got was silence. "For my sake? Please...?"
Heavy silence reigned between the three of them; Jillian with his head turned away and Izher pressing his lips tight with a stubborn look on his face.
Lu Yizhou let out a sigh. He was ready to give up for now when Izher suddenly chimed in. "I think Jillian’s idea is not bad." Lu Yizhou turned to him, pleasantly surprised. On the other hand, Jillian’s eyes went as wide as saucers as he stared in disbelief at Izher who was insistently glaring at the table as if its mere existence had offended his entire ancestors. "I mean, not the ’entire world’ part. We can start with a small scale first. Let’s focus on the area of the infected and see how it goes. Afterall, nothing will go wrong with a little bit of power, right?"
"R—Right..." Jillian still looked as if he had just seen a ghost. He blinked and blinked again. "I think... that’s a good idea. Nice start. I will..." Jillian stood up hastily. Lu Yizhou couldn’t even stop him when he looked as if he was seconds away from a panic attack. "I will go to seek an audience with His Highness." After saying that, he left as fast as a whirlwind, leaving the two deities behind in a muted silence.
"What?" Izher was still not looking at him. "Got something to say?"
Lu Yizhou let himself go back into spirit form and took Izher’s face between his palms, forcing the latter to look straight at him as Lu Yizhou offered him a smile. "Thank you, sweetheart. I am so proud of you."
Izher’s tense shoulders sagged and he rolled his eyes — Lu Yizhou couldn’t see it but he was certain it was an eye roll. "He’s a stubborn brute. If I am not the bigger man between us, then nothing will change at all."
Lu Yizhou chuckled. "Still, it’s awesome that you are willing to take a step forward." He pressed a fond kiss on the tip of his nose. "You’re amazing, beautiful, brilliant and kind." With every word, Lu Yizhou dropped small kisses on his forehead, cheeks and lips. "If you still think that it’s better if you don’t exist, then you will break my heart."
Izher harrumphed. He grabbed hold of Lu Yizhou’s wrist and without a warning, used it as a leverage to lift himself up until he was back to straddling Lu Yizhou’s hips. He planted a kiss on the inside of Lu Yizhou’s wrist, lashes fluttering coyly. "There are so many different ways you can thank me. Anyway, we were disturbed earlier so..." A small, wicked smile played on the corner of his lips. "...can we continue where we left off?"
So Izher chose to ignore his last sentence afterall, Lu Yizhou mused helplessly. He hoped there’s still time for him to slowly change Izher’s views, to let him know that no matter what, Lu Yizhou would always want him, the past and reasons notwithstanding. He slipped a hand to the back of Izher’s nape and pulled him down, the other rested on his thigh to rake his robes up. "We can..." he murmured and tilted his head to close the distance between them.

A few days later, Jillian and Izher finally had their first alone time (Jillian deliberately ordered Bassil to bring Regius away and distract him). Of course, the atmosphere between them was strained and awkward, neither was willing to look at the other.
Even if Izher had conceded last time, there was no fucking way he would do it again this time! Why should he be the one who had to yield to the other?
To his surprise, Jillian cleared his throat and broke the silence first. He was shuffling on his feet, the obvious telltale that he was nervous and jittery. "I... apologize for my crude remark last time. It’s discourteous of me."
Izher harrumphed, carefully shielding the surprise out of his face. "If Regius wasn’t there, I would have killed you long ago."
"But you can’t." Jillian retorted with his chin held high. "You are me. You can’t kill me." He let out a taunting smirk. "Moreover, Regius will be heavily disappointed in you."
"Impudent bastard..." Izher cracked his knuckles and gritted his teeth. "I can’t kill you. But I can still beat you up to pulp."
Jillian rolled his shoulders. "I believe in my close-combat ability."
"Try me."
For a while, both of them were glaring at each other.
"I punch you once and you punch me once, then we will put everything behind us." Jillian offered begrudgingly. "Deal?"
Izher eyed him in suspicion. "No place where the clothes can’t cover. Otherwise Regius will get angry at us again if he finds out."
They shivered at the same time, clearly reminded of how sexy it was when Regius got angry. It was terrifying and exciting at the same time. But it was a different case altogether when it came to disappointment. The last thing they ever wanted was to see their beloved sad.
"...You have a deal." Jillian grunted and lifted his fist. "I will go first."
(Until the end, Lu Yizhou would have no idea about this because Jillian and Izher would rather take the secret to their grave. He was only mildly confused when their relationship suddenly changed into frenemies.)
