Chapter 254: 6.14 G—Ghost!!!
"Do you hear someone’s screaming?"
The inquiry forced them to stop and strained their ears. Nothing. They shook their heads and continued on their way to the Duke’s room. So far, everything went smoothly. They had bypassed the main hall and entered the west wing where Jillian lived. They had no idea whether the Duke was naïve or overconfident in his own skill. He didn’t even have a guard inside the manor! Whatever, it made their task easier.
They hid behind the wall and poked their heads out to peek at the closed door. The coast was clear. "Listen, I will go in first to sneak an attack. If the Duke escapes me, you know what to do."
The two nodded and hid behind the large pillar. The Duke’s room was located on the end of the hallway thus if the Duke chose to run out, they could ambush him here and they could also keep an eye on anyone’s approaching. They chose their best positions and once again poked their heads out and— Goddamnit! Someone clad in black robe was standing in front of the Duke’s door! They instantly plastered themselves to the dark shadows, heart rabbiting inside their chest.
How... There wasn’t any sound of the door opening and they didn’t see anyone coming from the other side either! How could this man appear all of a sudden?!
"Is it a ghost...?"
"Hush! W—What are you saying?!"
"That can’t be the Duke, right?"
For a second, they looked at each other gravely, uncertain which was more terrifying; to face the Duke head or to confront a ghost. One more sneak peek told them that it wasn’t the person they were looking for. The Duke leaned more toward muscular but this man... he’s so tall and slender it was as if the slightest wind would be able to blow him away. They heaved a sigh of relief. The man’s body was solid, there was no way he could be a ghost! The assassins made eye contact with each other and nodded. There was only one way to proceed: kill!
The first person dashed out of his hiding place, ready to pounce on the black-robed man and slash his neck when he abruptly skidded to a halt. The hallway was empty again and the man was nowhere to be seen. H—How? He looked around in alarm. Where was he? How could someone disappear just like that?!
"Looking for me?"
He spun on his heels and swung his blade only to... stab into thin air. His breathing grew ragged as his eyes darted around in trepidation. He looked at his teammates who were looking back at him, equally confused. At that moment, a slight breeze caressed his arm and he shivered from the cold. But from his peripheral vision, he saw that all the windows were firmly shut! So where did the wind come from?!
"Where are you looking? I’m right here."
He turned again to find nothing. There was no one in the hallway except him and the two other. Most importantly, the voice sounded so close, so close it was as if the man was speaking right behind him. Was it... Was it really a ghost? The Duke’s manor was actually haunted?! He let out an impatient growl. A ghost or not, he would cut them down if they stood on his way! "Don’t be a coward and show yourself!"
Like a cue, he felt a presence vividly behind him and the hair on the back of his neck stood on its end. His eyes glinted as he twirled the blade between his fingers to stab right into the direction of the man’s neck, his movement so fast and slick that there was no way the target could dodge it. Hah! What ghost? He must have been quite tired. There was no ghost in this world! A satisfying feeling of sword piercing into flesh thrummed within him before he finally adjusted his grip to stab the sword deeper and slice the man’s neck once and for all.
Alas, right as he turned to face the other, his eyes instantly clashed with crimson ones, a color so bright that it resembled the blood that oozed out of the wound from his neck. The dark colored robe highlighted the man’s oddly pale skin and he looked down at the blade stuck in his neck with an almost nonchalant manner.
The assassin’s grip faltered as he took a step back, then another and another. "W—Who are you...?" He stole a discreet glance behind and saw none of his two teammates. Instead, there were two pairs of legs on the floor that poked out behind the pillars where they were supposed to hide. His heart sank to the pit of his stomach as he faced the black-robed man who had pulled the blade out of his body and was playing with it in between his fingers with dexterous movement. His crimson eyes glowed even brighter, a color so eerie that the assassin realized could never belong to any human. Damn it, there really was a ghost inside the Duke’s manor! "Who the fuck are you...?!"
"Don’t make a ruckus." Lu Yizhou’s eyes chilled abruptly as he flung the blade forward; straight toward the unassuming assassin with a speed invisible to naked eyes. When the assassin realized what was happening, the tip of the sharp weapon had been embedded deep into his neck... exactly the place where he had stabbed Lu Yizhou earlier. "He is sleeping soundly."
The man let out an incoherent gurgle, blood trickling down his mouth as he staggered on his feet, grasping onto the hilt of the blade with trembling hand. "Y—You..."
Lu Yizhou’s inhuman crimson eyes turned to him. "Ah, I forgot. You’re not allowed to die. Afterall, you seem to be the last one alive."
N—No... Panic and dread finally suffused into every pore in his body. How could this be? It was supposed to be a perfect, foolproof plan. They had calculated it down to any smallest possibility so... how could they fail before they even reached the target? And he...was the only one alive? His vision was dotted in black as the strength finally seeped out of his body, landing him on the floor in a bloody heap. The last thing he saw before he lost consciousness was the black-robed man’s feet who didn’t quite touch the ground, floating a few centimetres above.
His eyes rolled backward and he fainted.
***
Early in the morning, before the sun even appeared in the horizon, the whole manor was startled awake when a piercing scream echoed in the air, courtesy to the maidservant who had found a row of corpses on the front door, similar to how a cat would present their hunt to their owner.
Jillian almost fell off the bed in shock. The Duke’s manor was often peaceful because there was less than five people in the world who dared to mess with Jillian in his own territory. Unless they were desperate fools of course.
But it seemed like this time, it was truly an idiot. No, not only one but six, who had decided to stir the calm water that was Jillian’s volatile temperament. He woke up more irritable as usual for he didn’t have time to even greet Regius good morning and shower him with kisses before he was dragged away by Bassil who claimed that this was a life and death situation.
"So... who are they?" Jillian leaned against the wall as he watched the guard somberly examined the corpses with a bored expression. Ugh, truly a good way to start a morning. He’d rather be in his room and talk to Regius than be in the company of still corpses.
"We still don’t know yet, Young Master." Bassil assessed him with a worried look. "You’re not injured, are you? It seems like they’re here for you."
Well, that’s for certain. Who else would be the target except for him? But... "I didn’t hear anything last night." Not to mention that he was a soldier who had learned to be alert all the time even when he was asleep, there was no way he wouldn’t wake up if there was a fight inside his own house! "Who killed them?" He gave Bassil a once-over with a dubious look. "You...?"
"Young Master, you have thought too highly of me." Bassil replied with a placid tone, ignoring the veiled insult in Jillian’s words. "To be honest, I thought that you’re the one who has done this but it seems unlikely now that you have asked me this question."
Jillian frowned. He never bothered to station any guard inside his house because he never trusted any of them with his life, first and foremost. Second, he believed that he could defend himself just fine. Third, he didn’t like the presence of strangers in a space that was intimate to him. If it wasn’t him and Bassil, then who had killed the assassins?
"General!" A soldier called out. "This one is still alive!"
Jillian and Bassil looked at each other before they approached the soldier to find that indeed, one of them was still breathing despite the heavy wound on the side of his neck. Jillian ordered them to apply first aid treatment simply because he had information to extort. Whoever it was that left this one alive, Jillian must offer his sincerest gratitude. They had made it easier for him.
As the assassin’s wound was treated, his eyelids slowly fluttered open. Jillian was holding onto his sword behind his back, preparing to pull it out of its sheath in case of a sneak attack when the man’s eyes suddenly snapped open and he started screaming, almost throwing off the soldier who was bandaging his neck. His expression was distorted with horror as his eyes were wild in panic.
"H—Help! Ghost— there’s a ghost!!!"
