Chapter 205: 5.15 Real And Warm

Terra woke up with heaviness on his chest and stickiness on his eyes. Frowning, he rubbed them only to come into contact with wetness. He froze and abruptly, memories rushed back to him in waves. The fire alarm, the chaos outside and him thinking that he should jump out through the window if the fire reached his place. He was keeping an eye on the situation outside and was relieved when he didn’t find the signs of fire around the area. But then, it was as if he was hypnotized and without him realizing, he was already standing in the middle of the hallway. His spirit guide — Blackie — had gone somewhere else again. It had only started acting strange a few days ago, on the days where he accidentally overheard — no, he was definitely not eavesdropping — the doctors talking about two VIP sentinel patients that had been injured severely.

Terra hadn’t given it much thought. He only wanted to know what happened in the hospital so he could prepare himself accordingly.

It didn’t mean that he didn’t trust Doctor Wyatt though. The man was kind despite his permanent scowl, and his accommodating presence had started to make Terra treat this place as a safe haven, but it all completely changed last night when Blackie returned with... a man engulfed in flame?

Alarm bells rang inside his mind. He knew he should hide because the man was anything but dangerous but his feet were nailed to the ground, frozen still. He could only stare as the man stepped closer, his presence so bright and blinding amidst the darkness that Terra’s eyes teared up the longer he looked. His eyes drank in the man’s steady steps; the fire that vanished from his body, revealing a feature so handsome and sharp that it knocked the breath out of Terra’s lungs. It wasn’t the first time he had seen attractive men, but it was never this... intense before. His breath was caught in his throat and Terra didn’t even realize he had stopped breathing until the man arrived in front of him.

His tall stature towered over Terra and Terra was instantly drawn to his silver eyes, so sad yet delighted at the same time, as if the man hadn’t seen a sight as lovely as him. Terra found himself wishing he could move and do something other than stare. He wanted to touch the man’s cheek and confirmed he was real; he wanted to wipe the sadness away from those eyes.

But he did neither; instead, he burst into tears.

Terra had never cried this hard before, not when he killed his mother’s boyfriend for the first time, not when he was so weak to hunt for food and could only curl under the shade of tree and hug his cramping stomach, and certainly not when he was brought to this place where he could get three meals a day and a roof above his head. He cried, as if pouring out his grievance all those years, as if the bottled feelings inside him could finally find a place to lay, to be cradled and guarded.

He held onto the man, as if he had been waiting all his life.

As if the bitterness he had gone through was so that he could finally meet him.

It was ridiculous. He didn’t understand why he was feeling this way but he knew that he shouldn’t let go. No more regrets, a small voice inside him spoke. This time, there would be no more regrets.

"Don’t rub your eyes so hard."

Terra gasped at the sudden voice. How... He didn’t even realize that someone was in the room! In an instant, he sat up with a jerk and scooted to the corner of the wall, glaring. His heartbeat faltered when he realized that it was the man from last night. With the light pouring in through the window, he looked even more ethereal. His raven hair was a glorious mess, strands of it falling over his forehead. His body was only clad with a simple grey shirt and sweatpants, yet it was already enough to define how ripped his muscles were. And his eyes... oh his silver eyes, ever so penetrating yet gentle at the same time and when he took in Terra’s defensive state, they turned mellow and sorrowful. Terra’s heart skipped a beat and a nameless guilt surged in his chest.

No! He shook his head. He wasn’t going to let himself be affected for making the man look so sad. Not a chance!

Blackie, that traitor, was resting on the crook of the man’s arm. Its tail swished back and forth, looking as if it was having the best time of its life. Terra gave it a glare. What are you doing there?! He’s a stranger! Dangerous! He tried to convey the message through the glare only to be ignored blatantly.

The man moved to stand up and Terra flinched, staring at him in utmost vigilance.

He froze and after a few excruciating seconds, sat back down again. "Are you thirsty?" He asked in the deepest, most beautiful voice Terra ever heard in his short life and Terra’s heart did a strange flip. Huh, even his heart decided to betray him. "There’s water on the nightstand, if you want."

He didn’t move, of course. Who are you? He tried to communicate through his accusing eyes. What are you doing here?

As if the man could truly read Terra’s mind, he said. "I’m sorry for surprising you. I just want to be here when you wake up. I am... Kai."

Kai, his mind supplied. The dark sentinel that was being treated in this hospital. One of the two VIP’s patients. Terra tensed even more. He had certainly heard of dark sentinels before. Doctor Wyatt was the one who told him that the government was going to send dark sentinels on his way sooner or later. They could create mind barriers, thus his mental attack would be rendered useless. By that time, you will have no chance against them, the doctor had said. Could this man be the one sent here to kill him?

"I won’t harm you. Please rest assured." Kai said again as if he could read Terra’s mind. Or could he really...? "If you are not comfortable with my presence... I will leave."

NO! His body moved before his brain could think, reaching out toward... toward... What was he doing?! He stared at his own hand that had grown a will of its own and hastily yanked it back, fingers curling into a fist. What had he almost done earlier? Holding the dark sentinel back so that he could stay? A man who could kill him as easily as swatting a fly?

He told you he didn’t mean any harm, the traitor voice in his mind argued again. Did everything intend to go against him today?! What was wrong with him?!

"Terra?"

Terra’s eyes snapped up at that, widening in shock. It had been... more than a decade since anyone had called his name. Terra had almost forgotten how it sounded and God... it was even better when said in such a velvety voice. His heart sped up even more and it was as if the air dissipated around him, he couldn’t breathe and it hurt. Terra dug his nails into his palms and used the pain to sober himself up. He scowled, more at himself than the other. Would he just ignore how the dark sentinel knew his name just because of how good it felt when it was spoken through the man’s lips?

Still not taking his eyes off the man, Terra beckoned him over. Kai instantly stood up and Terra forced himself not to flinch and cower when the man inched closer. Kai moved slowly, his hand stroking Blackie between its ears and Terra felt the ghost of the touch on his own head. Terra shivered, it was awfully familiar. It was the touch that had lulled him to sleep for the past few days; the gentle, soothing caresses that had never failed to comfort him.

So... that person was Kai? Stupid, Terra should have guessed it earlier. Blackie wouldn’t be so snuggly toward him otherwise. It must be Kai’s demanding presence that had caused Terra unable to think clearly. How could this imposing man possess such gentle hands? Terra couldn’t comprehend it and it was getting harder and harder to think when his body threatened to melt and relax under Kai’s hands.

When Kai was a few steps away from the bed, he stopped, unwilling to breach Terra’s personal space without further permission. Terra stood on his knees and gingerly reached out, recoiling once in a while when Kai’s intense gaze fell on him. How long had it been since he tried to touch someone? Kai was so patient, staying still as Terra gathered his courage and bumped his fingertips lightly on the man’s jaw, so wary and cautious like he was approaching a wild animal. Except Kai was no animal, he was a human and the most gorgeous Terra had ever seen. Kai’s light exhale brushed through his skin and goosebumps raised along Terra’s arms in return.

He was real, Terra blinked, and warm. Very warm.
