Vampire: World of Blood -
Chapter 216 216: Spawnhood V
'Unissa, huh?...
Mercy's voice drifted lazily through Merciless's mind.
'You seem to favor the weird ones, haah?! Because out of all the witches in the Shared Collective, why her?'
Asked Mercy, and Merciless replied.
"Her power could create an opening, but her abilities are at their best when she has enough information to work with. That means I'd need to face the Protector first, figure out his abilities, and gather what I can. Surviving that encounter, though... I'm not so sure."
At these words, Mercy just laughed and replied back as such.
'So we are right back at square 1.... kinda... how reassuring.'
"Honestly, I could use those two to help with my problem, but I'm not willing to take that risk. I have bigger plans for them, and their role is specific. They just need to stay at a distance when I use my blessing to summon two more witches through them."
Merciless stated his plan, to which Mercy responded with a curious question.
'Hmm... And which witches—well, I suppose they're called Shagoths now—do you have in mind?'
"That's precisely why I need to summon Unissa."
Merciless replied as he answered Mercy.
"Once I transfer the information I've gathered to her, she'll help me figure out the best course of action. With just one minute, I'll need to make every second count. But before that, I'll have to face this thing alone to get a proper read on it. After all, I fight best when I'm on my own."
'...Hmm... yeah, make sense, I guess... after all, you only have a single minute to work with.'
"Sigh... the stress I tell yah...
Before Mercy could respond, a subtle shift in the air pulled Merciless's focus. Ana stirred from her slumber, her head lifting with a sudden sharpness. Her gaze fixed on a point far in the distance, her expression unreadable but intense.
"Hmm... you good, Space Girl!?"
Merciless asked.
Anastasia, however, did not respond.
The stillness of her movements was uncanny, or rather annoyed, her attention so absolute that it seemed as if the world around her ceased to exist as her focus was being pin-pointed in one direction.
"...Space Girl?"
Merciless called out to her, his voice calm.
However, Anastasia was not responding.
Instead, she rose silently, her movements deliberate, her eyes narrowing as if she were focusing on something invisible to everyone else.
Merciless eyes turn in the direction of her gaze; his eyes peer through the immaterial; however, even with his special eyes, he does not pick up anything.
Without a word, Anastasia extended her hand forward, her fingers unfolding in a fluid motion. One of the shimmering Aether rings encircling her wrist detached itself, hovering in midair. It spun once, then expanded, creating a massive portal that glowed with an otherworldly intensity, casting faint neon-blue patterns of light across the barren ground below.
"3...
Anastasia counts down as if she is timing a specific event.
Mercy's voice flickered in Merciless's mind.
"What's she up to, no...
"2."
However!!
Before he could finish.
"1."
As Ana's countdown reached its final second, a spear of blinding golden light tore through the sky, racing toward them with terrifying speed. The air itself seemed to tremble from the sheer force of its approach.
Yet Ana didn't flinch.
Instead, she was calm, as though she already knew what was coming. In that instant, her senses were not merely attuned to the present; she saw the threads of causality weaving out before her.
The events that would lead to her death were already laid bare—a series of choices and actions set in motion. It was as if she could perceive the very cause of her demise, tracing the path back to its origin, and just before it reached its inevitable conclusion, she could see where she could intervene.
She understood that the course of her death was a fixed point within this tangled web of causality. And as it rushed toward her, she could manipulate its course, stepping in just before the finality took hold, as if rewiring the event that had once been inevitable.
And as the golden spear appeared, it flew through the Aether portal, and it was placed just right in front of the surprise attack.
Moments later, a second portal appeared this time in the direction from which the attack came.
As a result, the spear burst out on the other side, striking the decrepit structure with a deafening explosion-up impact.
Bright golden light erupted from the impact point, spreading like wildfire.
The skyscraper disintegrated in an instant, its solid mass reduced to radiant particles that evaporated into the air. What remained was an empty void, or rather, all matter the light touched converted into the same light.
As a result, the shockwave hit moments later, unleashing a powerful gust of wind that tore across the landscape.
Dust swirled chaotically, clawing at everything in its path.
Merciless instinctively raised an arm to shield his eyes, his movements on point because he pulled Ana closer to him in that instant, securing her within the folds of his cape, shielding them both from the debris.
In the distance, a colossal golden fireball erupted where the attack had been redirected. The sheer scale of the explosion was staggering, its intensity vast enough to overshadow countless stars. The brilliance lit up the chaotic skyline, consuming everything in its immediate path.
Yet, oddly enough, most of the surrounding buildings remained standing. Only the building that had taken the full force of the blast was lost, its structure disintegrating into pure light.
What was even stranger was how quickly the world around them seemed to recover. The scars left by the attack faded as if the explosion had never happened, and even the faint marks left behind slowly vanished, the landscape quietly repairing itself as if undoing the devastation.
Of course, the place was shaking; tremors felt even in the sky around them shake.
The Corruption Beast Merciless has created held its ground even while mid-air, its massive frame steady despite the force of the blast.
On the other hand, Ophelia and Lucy remained unharmed within the shimmering green force field Avrora had conjured, her protective barrier encasing them all in a sphere of safety.
Over time, the blast passed, of course.
As the light faded.
But, it was not over, Merciless saw his death no experience its vision of him being pierce, by countless amount of raining lights above, madness took his mind upon the sligthest touch destroying him mentally beyond repair, a familiar sensation he felt once, but manage to escape thanks to black tail.
Once again, as if following in the footsteps of David, someone or something had found a way to weaponize the reflective light of Formless Light.
This wasn't just illumination; it was light intensified to an apocalyptic degree. The reflected radiance surged downward, a concentrated barrage of pure corrupted light cast mercilessly upon the land below.
That single attack annihilated everything and everyone in its path.
At that moment, Merciless died.
Or that was the vision Merciless saw; his cells, showing him the cause of death awaiting him in the future.
And so said... so done... his visions came true.
Golden clouds formed and spread above them at a rapid speed dominating the skies above, and soon thereafter, golden beams, like raining pillars, sharp and unrelenting like celestial spears, rained down from the heavens with unrestrained fury.
Light itself became the executioner, tearing through the fabric of existence, melting and distorting the Laws around it, casting logical perception into illogical madness.
A mere glimpse alone could destroy the mind.
Corrupt the soul.
And alter the body.
Yet... even when death was so near, instinct took hold of Merciless being in that moment.
Merciless's black miasma cape shimmered, transforming from pitch-black flames into a vivid hue of aether blue, the neon light spreading fast. Soon, he extended both his arms forward, his body levitating above the chaos as his cloak expanded, stretching wide like the wings of a great angel.
The fabric of his cape rippled with immensity, enveloping everything and everyone... Ana, Lucy, Ophelia, and the Corruption Beast; are all drawn into the safety of the Aether Bridge, a pocket dimension within his cape.
And not a moment too soon.
Everyone was pulled in just in time.
*Thud!!*
The heavy, guttural thud of the Corruption Beast collapsing onto the Aether Bridge echoed through the vast, otherworldly expanse.
Around them, the continuous expanse of shimmering blue bridges stretched out in all directions, splitting and twisting into countless paths. Each bridge led to a glowing wormhole, portals that pulsed with faint, otherworldly neon blue light.
Through those swirling gateways lie many entrances to various different composite universes per wormhole.
Along with places drawn from Merciless's memories and the memories of others as well.
But even upon arriving here, Merciless didn't allow himself a moment of hesitation. The beast's collapse was an afterthought; his focus was already elsewhere.
Soon after, a swirling portal began to form in his cape. But from Merciless body a scarlet light surged forth, its intensity growing as it poured into reality like a flood bursting through a shattered dam.
Crimson Dawn spread outward, saturating the space beyond the Aether Bridge that was Eregore. Its vivid, burning red consumed the battlefield, as everything was cast in red.
The sheer force of its presence was undeniable, and in its wake, Merciless's hidden attackers were revealed.
As the light illuminated their forms, their confusion was palpable. They hadn't expected this and hadn't foreseen the sudden shift in control. But Merciless's sharp eyes locked onto them immediately.
He looks closely, and all of his attackers suddenly tremble as they all feel his gaze being imposed upon them from his aura alone.
"Well, well... so that's how it is."
Merciless said calmly yet, his annoyance was very evident.
"Didn't expect to see such a massive army of Spawnlings like these around here. Rare, indeed."
His gaze locked onto his attackers, sharp and calculating.
Of course, Anastasia linked her eyes to Merciless, giving her the ability to see their attackers up front very clearly, leading her to ask as such.
"W-What the hell are these armored warriors master?"
The warriors were stunning but unsettling. Their skin was flawless gold, and their wings shimmered silver but looked as if it was made of silver. But their eyes were completely black; empty voids that didn't belong to anything human.
The veins beneath their skin ran dark and twisted, adding an eerie contrast to their radiant appearance.
They wore sleek white armor, but it wasn't graceful, more like something built for war. Jagged edges and sharp designs made it look almost monstrous. Each of them held weapons made of pure light... blades, spears, guns, hammers, and bows.
Merciless just sighed and answered the question.
"Those things are from the Seventh- line, and are Seventh-generation Spawnlings... according to the queen's memories of course, and from what I am seeing they are called Glydens."
Merciless said to Anastasia, as he continued, his focus fully on the enemies outside the Aether bridge.
"Tsk.... No wonder I didn't notice them till now...
"What a troublesome species."
Said Merciless, Anastasia on the other hand, just looked at Merciless, at this very moment her helmet was on as she began to say as such.
"Glydens... what so special about them?"
"Well for one they like rabbits, they breed as much as humans breathe air... that, and the fact that these things are masters of stealth... trying to find them when they are trying to hide from you is like trying to find a drop of juice, in the ocean; well in this case, it is like trying to catch a specific ray of light while looking at the sun."
Merciless announces as he explains how dangerous these things are.
"Even abilities built to analyze or uncover the truth can't perceive them, because they're not hiding, they are the light itself. They exist as living concepts, tied to the essence of individual rays. As conceptual beings or living light rays, they can merge seamlessly with all types of light, becoming one with their nature and adapting their immutability to its being. It's like trying to spot a ripple in a pond that's perfectly still, there's nothing to detect because they are the stillness."
