Chapter 344: Running in Circles
Chapter 344: Chapter 344: Running in Circles
"Everyone, be extra careful and don’t fall for that bastard’s tricks."
Though the Four Great Vajra thumped their chests confidently in front of Lei Yi, once they entered the jungle, they became exceedingly cautious. After all, just an hour ago, a native squad from the third company had been wiped out entirely by a single enemy in this very forest.
"Old Wu, Old Jiang."
The Four Great Vajra huddled together and pulled out a map of Paradise Island. Paradise Island was an irregularly shaped isle, with a central mountain that divided it into the northeast and the southwest regions.
Their camp was located on the banks of a natural river inlet lake in the northeast. Towards the island’s center was a vast coverage of undeveloped tropical rainforest.
"Old Li, do you have something to say?"
"Fellas, we’ve shared meals from the same pot for years now; let’s not beat around the bush, Sun Thief is not easy to deal with."
"Old Li, you’re not planning to shirk work, are you? All thunder and no rain?" Old Jiang with his bearded jowls frowned.
"You better think it through. Lei Lian is not someone easy to fool. He’s just suffered a huge embarrassment. If we don’t kill Sun Thief, his rage might just fall on us."
"Old Jiang, I’m not talking about shirking work; I’m saying we can’t be brash and mindless like those natives, charging in without thinking."
"The brothers we have here are our livelihood. If we lose them, what value do we have left?"
Hearing this, the other three Vajra fell silent, the point hitting home.
"Old Li, tell us your thoughts."
"Yeah, Old Li, we’re all brothers here, there’s no need to hold back."
Beard-jowled Old Li, seeing the others looking at him, didn’t try to be mysterious and spoke up directly:
"It’s only been just over twenty minutes since the enemy entered the rainforest. Given the situation before, they couldn’t have moved very fast. They can’t travel too quickly in the rainforest area, especially since just one or two kilometers ahead, they’d enter the mountainous region of the rainforest, and you all know what’s there."
Although Old Li didn’t spell it out, the other three Vajra nodded in understanding.
Paradise Island wasn’t all paradise; in fact, there was a region that could be called hell—the central mountainous rainforest belt.
It wasn’t just because the central rainforest area was undeveloped, rife with mosquitoes, snakes, and ants, making it unsuitable for life. Another reason was that the area was littered with a large number of landmines, forming a deadly web of explosives.
Venturing hastily into that region, the outcome was almost certain: death by landmine.
Even if one didn’t get blown up, that region was not suitable for human habitation at night. Even the natives were unwilling to stay overnight in the rainforest.
"My plan is simple. Sun Thief is new here and certainly doesn’t understand the island’s layout. We just need to drive him from behind, push him into that deadly zone, and let him meet his end naturally."
After laying out his plan, beard-jowled Old Li gave a cold, sinister smile.
"Good idea."
"Let’s do it that way."
"It will only be an hour or two until dark," he said. "We’ll herd them into the restricted zone before then and just wait for the bang."
"Since you all agree, let’s do that. Tell the brothers not to spread out too much and to fire a few shots now and then. Let that Sun Thief know we’re after him. If he doesn’t want to die, he’s got no choice but to run deep into the jungle."
"Heh heh."
The Four Great Vajra exchanged smiles and then divided the area directly on the map. Some people quickly formed a dragnet and started pressing towards the central area, herding Li Feng towards the restricted zone.
A moment later.
The Four Great Vajra hurriedly gathered their subordinates and disappeared into the jungle.
Meanwhile, just a few dozen meters from the edge of the jungle, a patch of grass suddenly stirred. Li Feng lifted the camouflage from his body, revealing himself.
If the Four Great Vajra were here, they would’ve jumped in shock because this rustling spot was just a few meters away from them, visible with a mere glance.
"Nice little scheme you’ve got there, but I’m really not in the mood to play along," Li Feng muttered to himself.
Li Feng glanced behind him. He hadn’t gone deep into the jungle at all. After letting Lei Yi go, Li Feng had abandoned his backpack and followed in Lei Yi’s wake, doubling back to this spot near the jungle’s edge to hide in plain sight.
Because from the start, Li Feng had been psyching them out, such as leaving his backpack full of food and water behind, leading the enemy to believe he was planning a prolonged war of attrition in the jungle.
There was also the matter of buying time. Twenty minutes might seem like the time he had gained for his escape, but in reality, it was another misdirection.
This psychological manipulation made the enemy subconsciously believe Li Feng would hide deeper in the jungle, whereas he had circled back, using the principle of ’hidden in plain sight’ to remain right under their noses.
Li Feng had undeniably managed to deceive them successfully. Over a hundred soldiers had rushed past Li Feng, hardly sparing him more than a glance and not even conducting a search.
He made his way lightly to the edge of the jungle, and by now, the vast camp was nearly empty. Li Feng slipped into the camp unnoticed.
He entered an empty tent and cleaned himself off, then found a set of the grey-green military uniforms the soldiers were wearing. He also found a bottle of melanin, sunscreen oil, and other personal items from one of the soldiers.
Using these, Li Feng concocted a solution that could change the color of his skin, then he spat on his face and exposed body parts. In a few moments, Li Feng’s skin turned to a sun-tanned wheat brown, which looked more like the skin of a tropical inhabitant.
After his disguise, Li Feng checked himself in the mirror – perfect.
Li Feng took out a map. Paradise Island’s main area was divided into three parts: Southwest, Central, and Northeast. The Northeast was where their camp was located, across from it was the Central region marked with a skull.
This area was mined, clearly not just for fun. Mines cost money, and if they went through the trouble of planting them, it likely meant there was something important in the Central region that needed such tight protection.
As for the Southwest region, it was the living area of Paradise Island, with resorts and beaches. To go from the Northeast to the Southwest region, aside from a simple circular dirt road around the island, the only other way was by sea.
Li Feng strolled nonchalantly around the camp. The boats at the dock had been taken away. In the previous conflict, Ma Zhanshan got shot in the shoulder by Lei Lian, and Lei Lian, in turn, had both his arms dislocated and a rib broken by Li Feng.
Both of them needed treatment, which the military camp was obviously ill-equipped to provide.
Without a boat, Li Feng could only drive there. He found a pickup truck in the camp and, to his surprise, the keys were still in it, saving him the trouble.
So, Li Feng drove the pickup truck out of the camp as if he owned the place, following the dirt road outside the camp directly toward Paradise Resort in the island’s Southwest.
