Chapter 126: Chapter 126: Acupuncture and Massage Room
Qiu Mingyue saw that her mother, after taking her medicine last night, got up today in good spirits, and even seemed to be in a much better mood, showing a hint of a smile on her face while talking with her parents.
Qiu Zhan’s face also occasionally squeezed out a hint of a smile, but it was very forced, and the concern and anxiety deep in his eyes were heavier than before, which Fang Bai could see.
Qiu Zhan knew that his wife’s improvement was only superficial; inside, her body was brewing an even greater crisis. Perhaps, the next time the toxicity flared up, he would truly be powerless to help.
This was the reason for Qiu Zhan’s anxiety and concern. His daughter was in better spirits because she simply didn’t understand these things, and Qiu Zhan hadn’t planned on telling her either.
After greeting their family, Fang Bai washed up and went out to eat,
Today was Fang Bai’s first day of internship at Yanjing Hospital. After eating breakfast, he arrived at the hospital early.
At the entrance of the hospital, he met Su Linglong, who was driven there by a bodyguard. They exchanged a few words, but as the start of the workday approached, they had to part ways.
Yanjing Hospital was expansive, with one of them working in the Nursing Department and the other assigned to the Acupuncture and Tuina (Massage) Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which were far apart. Considering the hospital’s rule against leaving one’s post during work, they could only meet after work.
The Traditional Chinese Medicine Department was a quiet place, and the Acupuncture and Tuina Room was even quieter, with barely any visitors. Those who worked there were mostly older in age. Young people around twenty years old, like Fang Bai, were a rare sight.
Of course, the quietness was relative.
When Fang Bai entered the Acupuncture and Tuina Room, he found that although it was not as bustling as the Western Medicine Department with its multitude of patients, there were still some people receiving treatment there.
The patients who came to the Acupuncture and Tuina Room were most commonly there for neck and lumbar spine issues, which were occupational illnesses that Western medicine did not have good solutions for. These patients could only come here for acupuncture, cupping, massage, and herbal baths.
Even though methods like acupuncture and massage could only provide relief and were not a cure, the brief respite and comfort were enough for patients to spend their money.
Since Fang Bai was an intern and new to the place, and also young, the official doctors in the Acupuncture and Tuina Room somewhat looked down on him, and the department head didn’t take him seriously either, assigning him to assist an elderly Chinese medicine practitioner named Xu Yida.
In Chinese medicine, seniority is often considered more important than in Western medicine. Xu Yida had been working in the acupuncture and massage department for decades, had trained many disciples, and held a lot of sway in the department next to the head, ranking just below one and above over a dozen others.
When Fang Bai entered the Acupuncture and Tuina Room, Xu Yida was in the middle of acupuncture treatment for a patient while explaining the process to several interns gathered around, commanding the area with great authority.
The interns, both male and female, came from various medical colleges across Huaxia. They were all very respectful, holding paper and pen, and taking notes on everything Xu Yida said.
Xu Yida didn’t even give Fang Bai, the new intern, a proper glance, and with an indifferent expression, he casually waved his hand, instructing him to stand behind and learn with the other interns.
Fang Bai, having lived for tens of thousands of years across two lifetimes, had long since become indifferent to everything. He was not upset by Xu Yida’s cold attitude and, with a smile, stood next to a skinny male intern wearing glasses.
"Let’s get acquainted. My name is Wu Tian, from Yuezhou Medical College."
The skinny, bespectacled Wu Tian gave Fang Bai a friendly smile and reached out his hand to him.
"Zhongzhou Medical College. Fang Bai."
Fang Bai, in his dealings, always respected others as much as he was respected. Xu Yida was cold to him, so he simply responded in kind. Wu Tian was friendly, and Fang Bai smiled back, shaking hands with Wu Tian.
After performing acupuncture and tuina on two patients, Xu Yida was showing his age and got a bit tired. He went to the office on the side to rest, leaving the interns to practice on their own.
Some quick-witted interns hustled to Xu Yida’s office, cleaning, serving tea, bringing the newspaper, and providing thoughtful service.
Their goal was straightforward, they hoped that Xu Yida would treat them well in return, and perhaps teach them some real skills.
Then there were the honest and down-to-earth interns, who stayed in the acupuncture and massage room, getting hands-on experience by administering treatments to patients, ranging from acupuncture and cupping to massage.
However, most of these interns were like Fang Bai, new to the job, and their skills were not quite up to par. Some of them couldn’t accurately locate the acupoints during acupuncture and were rough with their techniques, while others applied too much or too little pressure during massages, drawing constant complaints from some patients.
When Wu Tian was giving a massage to a hot-tempered elderly patient, he failed to control his strength and pressed too hard, causing the old man to cry out in pain and hurl a string of harsh words at him.
Wu Tian’s otherwise handsome face turned beet red as he hung his head low, continuously apologizing to the old man, who refused to let it go, claiming that the massage had worsened his back and demanded compensation.
Seeing the trouble, several doctors from the acupuncture and massage room came over to mediate, with one older doctor scolding Wu Tian harshly.
"Sir, please calm down; getting angry is bad for your health."
Fang Bai, seeing Wu Tian on the verge of tears, stepped forward to help him out of the bind.
The old man gave Fang Bai a sideways glance and said irritably, pointing at Wu Tian, "My back was already in pain, but after this kid’s treatment, it’s even worse. I think your hospital isn’t here to cure, but to kill!"
Fang Bai smiled and said, "Sir, you have back pain, right? How about I give you a massage?"
Seeing that Fang Bai was even younger than Wu Tian, the old man’s head shook like a rattle drum.
"If you give me a massage and I still feel pain afterward, then I will cover your treatment costs at this hospital from now on. How does that sound?"
"Really?"
"Really!"
The old man had chronic back pain and was spending hundreds every day on acupuncture and massage treatments at the hospital. He couldn’t help feeling the pinch, so how could he decline Fang Bai’s offer to treat him and even pay for treatments if it didn’t help?
"Young man, you better keep your word! If you go back on it, I’ll come here every day to make trouble for you," the old man said with a stern face.
Fang Bai smiled and gestured around, saying, "There are so many doctors and patients here who can act as witnesses. If I go back on my word, I wouldn’t be able to show my face here ever again, even without your complaints."
"That’s true. Come on then, let’s see how good you are. I’m not asking for a miracle cure for my back pain, just that your massage provides some relief similar to Doctor Xu Yida, and I won’t make a scene," the old man remarked before positioning himself on the bed voluntarily.
Fang Bai patted Wu Tian on the shoulder and whispered, "It’s okay now, go take a break and relax."
Wu Tian, grateful for Fang Bai’s intervention, thanked him and then turned to leave the room.
