Chapter 314: Chapter 317: Sycophancy Gone Wrong
Chapter 317: Not Quite Nailing the Bootlicking
"Uh, wasn’t I just trying to close the gap between us? No need to be so fierce," Lin Zifeng retorted with a pout.
"Go away, who wants to get closer to you?" Su Ni clenched her cute fists tightly, almost punching him directly in the head.
"So, it’s just my wishful thinking then?" Lin Zifeng heavily shook his head. This art of flattery needed a right target; one careless move could backfire spectacularly.
"Good to know. Let’s go inside; why are you still standing out here?" Su Ni glared at him fiercely, then tossed her head and strode towards the police station, leaving Lin Zifeng dazed and confused by her actions. Now, Lin Zifeng felt as if he was visiting his own home.
...
After a brief interrogation and in the absence of any evidence, Su Ni had no choice but to let things slide. After taking Lin Zifeng’s phone number, she allowed him to return home, advising him to wait for her call and be ready to respond at any time.
He wasn’t being difficult; since Su Ni was intentionally giving him a way out, he didn’t foolishly ask why.
As Lin Zifeng whistled and left, on the rooftop of the second floor, Su Ni stood with her arms crossed, watching the direction in which Lin Zifeng disappeared.
At that moment, a middle-aged man in a police uniform slowly approached with a cup of tea in his hand.
"Did you discover something about this kid?" The middle-aged man wasn’t particularly imposing, but his demeanor had a profoundness to it, especially his piercing eyes, small yet always sparkling with a keen light.
"Dad, did you already find out something?" Su Ni asked, taking the tea, puzzled.
"No," the middle-aged man said flatly.
"Then, what did you mean by asking me just now?"
"Ni’er, the least suspicious things in this world can sometimes be the most baffling. We, as police, must keep our insights sharp. Although I couldn’t see through that young man just now, I always feel that he’s not as simple as he appears. Keep a close watch on him, but be very careful not to expose too much, for I fear it might end up harming you," he advised earnestly.
"Dad, are we perhaps overthinking this? I don’t see him as dangerous as we imagined. I witnessed everything that happened outside today. I don’t think he is that mysterious person," Su Ni expressed, reluctant to believe that Lin Zifeng was the person they were looking for.
"Let’s hope so!"
The middle-aged man looked up at the sky and sighed...
Being dragged off to the police station first thing in the morning was truly miserable.
After returning home, Nangong Bing had assumed Nangong Bing had gone to work, but as soon as he opened the door, he found Nangong Bing sitting cross-legged on the sofa, constantly making phone calls, seemingly searching for someone.
"Then I’ll trouble Director Zhang, this person is very important to me, I wouldn’t want him to suffer any harm in there, so I would appreciate it if Director Zhang could make the effort today," Nangong Bing maintained her usual icy demeanor. Even when she needed help, she talked as if she was entitled to it, giving others a strong sense of oppression. It was a rare day off at home for Zhang, and suddenly receiving a call from Nangong Bing delighted him immensely.
The result of taking the call was that Zhang’s heart nearly stopped due to her cold demeanor; for some reason, he always felt that Nangong Bing contacting him was never good news. It was only upon inquiring that he found out she just wanted a small favor, and he had thought she had discovered he recently received hundreds of thousands in illicit funds from Tianyu Group.
"Ms. Nangong, rest assured, you can leave this minor matter entirely to me; I will definitely provide you with a satisfactory response ..." came the sycophantic voice of Director Zhang over the phone.
Nangong Bing then nodded, saying, "Then I’ll trouble Director Zhang."
"No trouble at all, no trouble at all, it’s all part of the job, to be able to serve Miss Nangong..." He hadn’t finished his sycophantic phrase before Nangong Bing had already hung up the phone. She was all too familiar with such flattery.
"Ah, I wonder how he’s doing now, should I go to the station to see him?" Nangong Bing murmured to herself while stroking the handsome guy lying on the floor sticking his tongue out, noticing his ears prick up suddenly.
Turning her head, she saw Lin Zifeng leaning against the door, smoking a cigarette and taunting, as if something amused him but he dared not laugh out loud.
"Lin! Are you asking for trouble? You’re already back, why don’t you come in? Are you doing this on purpose?" Nangong Bing instantly understood, guessing that he had overheard her phone conversation.
"No, no, boss, I just got back too, and seeing you on the phone on the sofa, I didn’t want to disturb you," Lin Zifeng said earnestly.
"Did, did you hear what I just said?" Nangong Bing today wore a gray-white casual sports outfit, which accentuated her perfectly curvaceous figure, giving her a girl-next-door vibe compared to her usual business attire, her smooth and long X only sadly obscured by her long trousers. Her toenails, painted pink, and her slightly curled hair draped over her shoulders, made today’s outfit seem much fresher than her usual fierce businesswoman look.
"No, no, I just got back, how could I have heard everything right away? You must be imagining things, by the way, boss, when did you come back last night? I looked for you all night and couldn’t find you, did you sneak back yourself? It made me search everywhere for you all night, I even thought I had lost you."
"Last night? You didn’t come back all night because you were looking for me?" Nangong Bingjiao was slightly startled.
"Yes, do you know how worried I was about you last night? I waited for you all night at the hotel. You took so long in the restroom, and after asking many people and reviewing lots of surveillance footage, I found out that you had been abducted. At first, I didn’t believe it, but since you’re back now, it seems I was overthinking it." Toward the end, Lin Zifeng didn’t forget to add a dramatic sigh.
"Then, then I wasn’t rescued by you?" Nangong Bing was finally somewhat shocked. If not by Lin Zifeng, then who could it be? The moment she entered the restroom, she was knocked unconscious, and when she regained consciousness, she found herself quietly lying at home. Could it be that the man with the bronze mask had rescued her?
"Rescue? What rescue? Boss, could you clarify, were you really abducted last night? And someone rescued you?" Lin Zifeng extinguished his cigarette, visibly shocked by what Nangong Bing had just said.
