Chapter 247 That Battle
She truly was an undeniable "Elf," even her way of walking sparked wild thoughts; whoever ends up marrying her would probably be dried up by her at night.
Zheng Xiaofang’s personality could rival that of the department head Mu Yang; both women had their own charms and strengths, but Mu Yang seemed much more mature than Zheng Xiaofang. Moreover, Mu Yang had grown up in a privileged family, living a life of luxury, which bred a temperament not easily matched by ordinary women. Additionally, with Mu Yang nearing thirty, one could imagine how alluring she must be by now.
Ever since Zifeng established his authority in the Finance Department on day one, the whole staff now wished they could offer him up as a revered figure, fearing that he might turn around and tattle to the President, putting their jobs at risk. It wouldn’t matter how solid their connections were then.
"Morning, Brother Lin!"
"Brother Lin, morning."
"Brother Lin, you’re early, have you had breakfast...?"
"Brother Lin, are you free tonight? Maybe we could hit the bars together?"
"..."
A bunch of bootlickers, bursting with energy from who knows where. The moment they saw Zifeng enter the company, their faces lit up with smiles, nodding and bowing to him while sweetly calling him "Brother Lin."
Walking along, at least twelve people greeted him, and Zifeng started to feel overwhelmed. It was too demeaning; he had finally infiltrated the Finance Department, hoping for some comfortable days, but instead, he found himself being isolated by everyone.
The warmer people called him "Brother Lin," the more it inadvertently made him miss the days at the security department. Back then, he enjoyed leisurely chats with his buddies about who among the company beauties had a bigger butt or smaller bosom, and they would share raunchy jokes when idle. But now, people kept their respectful distance, leaving no one to talk to.
For someone who naturally loved warmth and company, this sudden coldness was unbearable. It was like being sent to the cold palace by the Emperor, and it felt as dreadful as one could imagine.
With a forced smile plastered on his face, Zifeng finally made it to his so-called office.
It was really just a small, separate space with nothing more than a computer, a desk, two leather couches, and a water cooler.
These past few days, Zifeng’s work consisted of nothing more than spacing out in his office.
This was the position Nangong Bing, his nominal wife, had arranged for him.
He had always wanted to land a job like this; now that his wish had been fulfilled, he realized that this idle life, which led to growing restless from the inactivity, wasn’t as great as he had imagined.
It wasn’t as comfortable as his previous life as a security guard, with nothing to do but wander around the company.
Today, Zifeng arrived earlier than usual. On his way past the finance room, he saw five or six quite attractive ladies throwing him flirtatious glances.
Zifeng knew they were just toying with him, so he paid no attention and headed straight for the director’s office. His office was tucked in a corner of the director’s office, and Xixi would pass by his space every day to and from work, which is why today it seemed like Xixi was running a bit late.
Seeing Zifeng idly playing games and looking utterly bored, Xixi grew a bit puzzled.
However, Zhang Xixi was not the type of woman to speak excessively. Within the company, besides work-related matters, she seldom interacted with others. She would sit alone quietly in her office chair, occasionally gazing at the world outside with envisioning eyes, endlessly fantasizing in her mind.
Her personality was not inherently cold, but rather, she was naturally modest and kind-hearted. In fact, it was her unique background, coming from a rural household, that made her feel inferior all along. Even though she now occupied a high position, she still considered herself insignificant.
It was such a silent hard worker, who never meddled in world affairs, that caught Nangong Bing’s greatest appreciation! The reason was simple because she was very dedicated.
Seeing Zhang Xixi pause slightly at the door for a few seconds, Lin Zifeng also raised his head at the same time. Their gazes suddenly intertwined. Lin Zifeng could see the complexity in Zhang Xixi’s eyes, as if filled with endless concerns, and as though her tender heart harbored many untold stories.
Zhang Xixi also acutely felt the faint sorrow in Lin Zifeng’s eyes. Although Lin Zifeng usually acted like a playboy, always with an unserious demeanor, now, after a few seconds of eye contact, he left Zhang Xixi with an oddly complex emotion.
This man was strange.
And he was also sad.
After a few seconds of eye contact, Zhang Xixi’s gaze became frantic. With some embarrassment, she lowered her head and walked toward her office. Even with the conflict that had arisen between them in the previous days, Zhang Xixi was not looking for trouble with Lin Zifeng. She did not even mention a word about it. If it were another woman, well, let’s not say more, it would be enough for Lin Zifeng to endure.
Upon entering her office, Zhang Xixi’s mood suddenly became very complex and much cluttered.
Why did that man look so lost just now?
Why do his eyes exude a faint sense of sadness? Could it be he had experienced some drastic ups and downs in the past? Or was there some secret unknown to others that occurred to him?
Zhang Xixi poured herself a glass of water and hung her head low, sitting alone in contemplation, as the feeling he gave her was quite peculiar. They had had their frictions before, but she had never seen him exhibit such a sorrowful side...
Leaning back in his chair, Lin Zifeng played several rounds of video games, then took to playing chess. Before he knew it, two hours had flown by. Feeling utterly bored, he leaned back in his chair and smoked a cigarette.
With eyes open, he watched the smoke rings from his mouth gradually disperse into the void, then rise, slowly expand, and finally dissipate...
Touching the black wristband on his wrist, warmed by his body temperature, Lin Zifeng’s long-dormant line of thought began to resurface slowly...
"No...!"
A hair-raising, wretched scream bellowed from Lin Zifeng’s blood-filled mouth as he completely descended into madness!
In the jungle strewn with debris, corpses lay quietly in all directions, amounting to no less than hundreds. Blood flowed like water, staining the green earth beneath.
People kept falling around Lin Zifeng, and the air was filled with their woeful howls.
The thunderous sound of grenade explosions, as if the earth were quaking, made the ground tremble incessantly.
Remains and shattered limbs rained down from the sky, and blood, bright and putrid, splattered the blasted, scorched earth.
