Under the vampire Lord's protection
Chapter 231: Un-provoked

Chapter 231: Un-provoked

After the end of her shift, Edna never headed straight for the maid’s quarters.

Force of habit made her roam the manor’s hallways for when she used to seek Silas out.

The desire to see him lingered but the maid knew that keeping her distance was for the best. Especially when she was in bed with his enemies.

Part of her simply wanted to lay low until the next piece on the board was moved, but another part, a quieter part, couldn’t face him. Whether that was out of guilt or shame... Edna never dwelled long enough on the matter to solve that equation.

Most of all, the biggest piece of her chose to stay away in order to spare herself the pain of witnessing that smarmy harlot kiss up to him.

There was no way she’d handle the repulsive sight of their arms wrapped together without losing her sanity or causing a scene.

Not knowing where they were or what the two of them were up to was a blessing to a certain extent.

But the bliss for that calm night did not last as a strong hand wrapped around the blonde’s arm and yanked her like she was nothing but a ragdoll before slamming her against the nearest wall.

It seemed the tables had turned on her. She who had the habit of cornering people was cornered herself.

The hit she’d sustained to the back of her head knocked the sense out of her for a good moment and when she finally came to, Katherine’s twisted demeanor was the first image invading her brain.

"It’s you! It’s all your fault!" the vampiress hissed so close to her face, the blonde was forced to shut her eyes again.

"What..." Edna tried to articulate but Katherine shook her figure, syphoning the wind out of her lungs once more.

"I told you to stay away, didn’t I?" that time around she growled instead of hissing.

"Let me go!" the maid demanded in a tone she wished firm, but the crack in her voice betrayed the terror consuming her.

"Quit playing innocent! That is far above you, now," by then Katherine had already wrapped her hand around Edna’s throat, further pressing her against the wall.

The strain on her vocal cords left the maid mute with her own fingernails clawing at the vampiress hand as a sole recourse.

The world around her had begun to spin, progressively blurring from the edges towards the center, but just as everything was about to turn black, Katherine’s hand relinquished her at once as a new voice blared across the hallway.

"Katherine! What in the name of the Lord are you doing?"

Edna was not familiar with Allegra, but she sure was grateful for her intervention.

The second vampire stood between a raging Katherine and the maid’s figure who slid to the floor the instant it was set free.

Allegra held Katherine around the middle, doing her best to keep her from reaching the half-conscious blonde.

"Control yourself, sister!" she barked through a stiff jaw and the efforts to stop a murder.

"Let me end her!" Katherine was hearing none of it, "She must be put down for her doings!"

"What doings do you mean? Stand down and stop this madness right this second or there will be consequences!"

When all of her attempts to get through to her sister failed, Allegra turned to Edna instead, "You! Stand up and get out of her sight if you wish to stay alive!"

Albeit it for different reasons than her usual stubbornness, Edna did not take Allegra’s directives for she simply couldn’t. Even breathing became a chore. The coughing did not help, but the pain was what truly kept her pinned to the ground.

"She must pay for it all!" Katherine was relentless and kept on pushing forward, closer to the quivering body of Edna.

No matter how strongly against her she pressed, Allegra’s feet slipped on the ground, cutting the distance between Katherine and her would be victim shorter with every second.

All of the sudden however, the screaming ceased at once. It was Katherine’s turn to be violently rammed against the wall.

It happened so fast even Allegra was taken aback and scrambled to regain her balance.

Katherine’s feet dangled above the ground while her eyes were plunged into those of Silas who held her in place with great ease, needing one arm alone for the deed.

"Does any one of you care to explain?"

"Katherine seems to have it out for this maid, Master," Allegra straightened her stance before pointing behind herself.

"Why?" he asked, never once breaking eye contact with Katherine.

"From what I’ve witnessed, the attack was unprovoked," Allegra made a short pause then added with a reluctant tone, "I think, she’s gotten confused again,"

Silas watched as the glare on Katherine’s face gradually faded, her traits mellowing under his gaze.

Her eyes finally flickered between him onto Allegra and then... Towards the curled-up figure of Edna.

What was once rage shifted to utter horror as the realization of her actions dawned on her.

"Oh, dear Lord! What have I done?" she cried.

A squeaky yelp escaped Edna when Silas released Katherine.

"I am so sorry! I didn’t mean to...,"

Seeing how Edna literally shriveled up and wept harder, the vampiress halted in her tracks.

"Allegra, guide Katherine towards the dungeons," Silas started, "I am afraid you can’t be trusted for the time been," he then addressed Katherine.

In response, she merely nodded and allowed her sister to guide her away without a single protest.

"What have I done to any of you to deserve all of this?"

Edna’s broken voice brought Silas’ attention onto her crumpled face.

"Head to the infirmary,"

he uttered dryly, prompting her to glare up at him, eyes boring into his with an intensity that would have burned holes into the thickest of walls.

That seemed to give her the strength to rise onto her feet, tears still streaming down her cheeks.

The coughs did not stop as she relied on the walls to help carry her weight.
