Under the vampire Lord's protection -
Chapter 219: A peace offering
Chapter 219: A peace offering
On the plate, lay a rich and large piece of raw meat steak. Much like the shade of the porcelain, her dress was white and trailed behind her every step.
"I hear we’ve got a guest," the smile on her was warm, a lot warmer than her usual.
Considering the vampiress was awake and on her feet, Arabella rightfully assumed that the sun had sunken behind the hills.
The poor boy’s state did not improve one bit since the entrance of Persephone within his line of sight.
On the contrary, he pressed himself harder against the wall as though hoping against all hope it’d open and allow him an escape.
But it didn’t and his growls completely shifted into squealing.
Those weeps that resembled a puppy’s cries devastated Arabella who still understood none of the reasons that fueled his reaction.
"What is happening with him? Why is he so frightened to see you, my Lady?"
"There is no need to fret," Persephone raised a hand, "Wolf children, from their tender age, are always explicitly taught to steer clear from vampire women," she explained calmly.
"Why?"
"Why because we are the most unpredictable breed, of course," the vampiress chuckled lightly, "We retain our sanity most of the time, but there are distinct circumstances during which that isn’t the case and we can’t be reasoned with,"
"During pregnancy," Arabella muttered, a look of comprehension dawning on her.
"As such, wolf children are instructed to never engage with a vampire woman if one ever crossed their path because at a young age, they are not skilled enough to determine if she, one of my kind, is with child or otherwise,"
Arabella’s hand gravitated towards her pendant and squeezed on it before kneeling back down in front of the bars, "Rem... Rem look at me, please," she tried again in the softest of tones, "Look this way, please,"
It took some more coaxing for the boy to finally look away from Persephone and at Arabella.
"She won’t hurt you," she shook her head, "See for yourself, I, a human, am standing right next to her and I am still alive and well,"
Remus looked between her, Silas and Persephone who raised the plate further in her hand.
"I come with a peace offering," the vampiress too knelt down and placed the plate right next to the bars, "Come now, I am sure you are very hungry,"
Remus uncurled his body just enough to take a few sniffs of the odor coming his way.
"It’s alright, I promise you she won’t hurt anybody. She is very kind," Arabella offered him the warmest of smiles.
A few more tries were necessary for the kid to crawl forward very slowly while watching Lady Persephone like a hawk.
The vampiress seemed to have frozen herself in time just to gauge Remus’ actions, her void-like eyes never leaving him for a second.
He stopped all movement near the bars and sniffed the air carrying the aromas of that rare steak before looking at Arabella for approval.
"It’s alright," she nodded, "you may take it. It is for you,"
Very carefully, a shaky little hand went through the bars, gravitating towards the meat. The instant his fingers had gotten the first pinch of it, Remus yanked his hand back at once, snatching the steak into the cell with it.
After a little more sniffing on his part, he finally took the first bite, which led to a second and then a third. Once he was done assessing her... Her offering, his patience seemed to reach its limits as he began stuffing his mouth with, gripping it with both hands and tearing at it like there was no tomorrow.
"Oh... You are hungry...," Arabella muttered, "Why didn’t I think of bringing you food?"
"Don’t be too harsh on yourself, now. You had other matters on your place," Lady Persephone reassured her without ever looking away from the boy, an amused air on her.
"Did you come all the way down here just to see him?" Silas’ voice resonated, bringing both of the women’s attention onto him.
"I don’t need a reason to amble these halls. This is still my property, isn’t it?"
"Of course,"
"However, in this case, you are right," the Lady stood to her feet, "I did not come here simply to see the boy despite it being one of my main reasons. There is a somewhat urgent matter that you and I need to discuss," the smile on her faded a little.
"Somewhat urgent?" he half asked, "Can it wait? We are in the middle of yet another urgent matter," he ushered at the cell containing Remus.
"One of you can very well handle this one on their own," she turned towards Arabella before looking back at her son, "Besides, no offense to you, but if anyone is going to make any sort of progress with this child, it won’t be you,"
"Then you may as well speak here because I am not leaving her alone with him," his diamonds sharpened, flickering onto Remus.
"Nonsense!" Lady Persephone’s voice blared louder but remained steady, "Look at him. There isn’t one mean bone in his body,"
Granted, the sight of Remus savagely devouring that piece of steak did not help quell Silas’ worries. The vampire stood firm on his stance until Arabella broke her silence.
"It’s alright, Silas," she looked him in the eyes, "I am safe. Rem won’t hurt me. She is right, he is a good kid,"
Upon hearing his name from the young woman, Lady Persephone’s eyebrows twitched, but she made no comment on it as she was more taken by the effect it had had on her son who usually never broke the mold of stoicism.
Indeed, the vampire blinked one too many times and cleared his throat, "Right," after one last look at Remus, Silas turned around and started to walk away, "We won’t be long,"
Lady Persephone lingered for a moment, eyes strictly on Arabella who sensed the weight of her gaze the instant it’d landed upon her shoulders.
The young woman too cleared her throat and stood up to curtsy before her hostess, "Thank you, my Lady,"
