Chapter 468a - Making Waves
“Another error is taking place on that same planet.”
None of the others replied as all five sensed the disturbance.
“The skill is active and attempting… to allow access to the tower for an unapproved… dragon?” one of the female watchers stated.
“Are those permitted access on that world?”
“None have ever attempted and –”
The same male watcher who pointed out the error was cut off as all the threads from that world pulsed simultaneously.
“We… how can that have happened?”
“It has grown stronger and bolder,” one of the other male watchers stated. “It has evaded the system many times, but this is not where it should be.”
“The tower will not allow it. We cannot allow it.”A pounding on the door to their room rang out, and all five glanced away from the pulsating threads.
“It is Wekime. He appears… anxious.”
“It is his child. He should be,” the first female water replied. “Even now, both of them may die.”
Over and over, the sound that might deafen anyone who could hear it rang out.
“Let him in.”
A second later, the ancient god rushed in, his eyelids opening and closing from both directions.
“You must allow it. The connection is weak!”
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
“We do not have to obey you. They are attempting to bypass–”
“If they do not then only two black skills will remain! Then what?!”
All five watchers went silent.
“I’ll pay the price! Just save them both!”
Each watcher looked at the other and then nodded.
The pulsating threads returned to normal and Wekime clutched his chest, his three claws digging in through his bright yellow robe.
“Thank you.”
“Wekime… you are skirting rules that are in place for a reason. Stray too far and you may find yourself in a perilous position. Not even you can withstand the power of the system and the rules.”
His gold eyes glared at the male watcher who had spoken to him.
“You forget, we agree to operate with the system. Have you ever considered what would happen if that system broke or those who agreed to it all changed their minds?”
“Yes. Chaos. A breaking. Everything that led to us being chosen for this task. You were there, do you not remember?”
Wekime nodded slowly.
“I was there. I remember what we did and what it cost. The problem is that often we believe we are above ever having to repay that cost. But, so you’ll know I always pay my debts.”
He moved to a panel and held his hand over it, giving away more power than he needed to, ensuring he proved a point.
“I have paid mine today. Make sure you remember those whose lives you toy with. If the wrong one dies and the prophecy does not happen, the chaos that once was will happen again.”
He turned and walked out.
Once the door closed the five looked at each other for a moment.
“The system has caught the one. What shall we do?” the second female watcher asked.
“Leave it for now. It needs to learn not to mess where it does not belong.”
The other four stared at the one who first pointed out the error.
“Agreed.”
