Chapter 91: Chapter 81 Designated Task

"Using a gun is a matter of knowledge for an assassin, not terribly abstruse, easy to learn but hard to master.

In James Bond movies, the PPK is Bond’s main handgun, and because spies and assassins operate in highly similar environments, Chen Guangxin also used a PPK.

But Gao Yi had a PPK and didn’t use it, he brought a Makarov PM from the safe house.

The Makarov PM is compact and easy to hide. Although it was a Soviet attempt to replicate and improve upon the Walter PPK, and their appearances are highly similar, Gao Yi chose the Makarov over the PPK because the Makarov is easier to disassemble, maintain, and much less prone to malfunction.

Furthermore, the 9x18mm PM ammunition used by the Makarov PM is more readily available and packs a bit more punch. Therefore, nowadays, many in the assassin circle actually prefer the Makarov PM to the PPK.

Assassins don’t use holsters for their guns, not even carrying spare magazines, focusing instead on concealment and guaranteed accuracy with each shot.

Aim?

Nonexistent.

Chen Guangxin was in plain clothes, without a hint of carrying a weapon, but as he walked face-to-face with Gao Yi, his left hand suddenly swooped into his jacket. His pistol had yet to leave his waist when he swung the muzzle and pulled the trigger at Gao Yi.

Of course, there could be no bullets, the click of the pistol’s spring resonated, then Chen Guangxin fired a second shot as he moved the gun up along his body.

’This second shot, go for the head; you must double-tap the brain.’

Chen Guangxin extended the gun, his face stern, ’At this moment the target would already be dead, falling creates the space to shoot, and there should be guards on either side behind the target, so these next two shots are for the guards.’

Chen Guangxin swung the handgun, and after two clicks, he tucked the gun back into his jacket and walked forward. After taking a couple of steps, he stopped and addressed Gao Yi, ’Never shoot unless you have the opportunity, and once you do, show no mercy. By this point, the mission should be accomplished, and the question then becomes how to escape.’

Gao Yi nodded repeatedly, but Chen Guangxin just said, ’Practice.’

Moving aside, Chen Guangxin sat at a table, poured himself a cup of tea, and watched Gao Yi practice shooting.

Hiding the gun and drawing it were not problems for Gao Yi, but hitting the target after drawing was another story.

Chen Guangxin’s method was to shoot close to the target, sure to hit, but for Gao Yi, being so close it was quicker and more convenient to incapacitate the target and guards with bare hands, making this gun practice seemingly pointless.

Ninety-nine percent of assassins lack the ability to instantly incapacitate their target bare-handed, so close-quarter shooting is also an important skill, but what Gao Yi lacked was how to deal with armed guards from five meters away.

However, practice should always start with what is easy, so Gao Yi would start with close-quarter shooting and gradually increase the distance.

Gao Yi’s gun was indeed loaded.

He drew the gun and fired two shots at the target, then turned and shot twice at two guards, followed by four shots at two targets five meters away. The magazine had eight rounds in total, and just these few shots emptied it.

Checking the targets closely, both had been hit, not in the head but in the chest.

Gao Yi was pleased, for although not yet ready for a real fight, he was improving.

’Mentor, what do you think?’

’Slow, imprecise, not fast enough.’

Chen Guangxin laid his own gun on the table and said, ’When you can shoot without sights and hit a moving target’s forehead with every bullet, your gun skills will be considered mastered. Distance needn’t be too far, ten meters, ten meters is enough.’

The gun Gao Yi picked up in the safe house was chosen at random, but Chen Guangxin’s was different—it was his custom sidearm of many years.

A personal sidearm is an assassin’s second life. At least, that’s true for someone like Chen Guangxin, so he never showed his gun to anyone.

But Gao Yi was definitely different; he was very much his close nephew.

So Chen Guangxin took out his gun and placed it on the table, meaning to let Gao Yi take a look, give it a try.

’Mentor, may I look at your gun?’

Chen Guangxin nodded happily and, after inserting the magazine, said, ’Give it a try.’

Gao Yi set down his own gun and picked up Chen Guangxin’s.

The gun was unremarkable, small but heavy. However, the front and rear sights had been filed off. When Gao Yi aimed at the target, he had to rely purely on instinct since aiming was impossible.

’Take two shots, try it.’

Gao Yi racked the slide and chambered a round, then fired twice at a target roughly ten meters away.

Shooting solely by feel and at this distance wasn’t good; ten meters was, in fact, quite far. Upon inspecting the result, Gao Yi found not a single bullet hit the target.

’Mentor, I didn’t hit...’

Chen Guangxin smiled faintly and said, ’You need to practice. This kind of marksmanship depends on talent, but close-range instinctual shooting comes with practice, nothing else. Much like your excellent physical skills, it means you have great motor skills. Once you shoot as well as you punch, that’ll do.’

Bolstered in confidence, Gao Yi looked down at the gun in his hand and then suddenly asked, ’Mentor, you’ve modified this gun, haven’t you?’

’It’s been modified, the trigger is lighter and smoother, I adjusted it myself. But you need to be careful, this kind of gun goes off more easily, and when you carry it close, you might shoot yourself by accident. You should find a safer gun while you haven’t developed a habit yet.’

Well-prepared Gao Yi couldn’t agree more, nodding repeatedly, ’Yes, I’ll definitely find a better gun.’

Many assassins stick to one gun for life, especially those who shoot by feel and are unlikely to switch easily. Since Gao Yi had not yet developed this one-with-the-gun feeling, he had the chance to choose a more modern, safer one to bond with.

Choosing a gun, in some ways, is like choosing a partner or getting married.

Chen Guangxin took back his gun, engaged the safety, and tucked it back into his jacket, ’Continue practicing, I’ll watch.’

Gao Yi picked up his Makarov again, but then his phone rang.

It could only be a call from Luca. Gao Yi answered, ’What’s up?’

’You haven’t checked the Dark Web account, have you?’

’No, I’m practicing shooting.’

’Check it.’

Luca now had access to Gao Yi’s account and password, and would occasionally log in to check on it while Gao Yi was shooting.

Gao Yi accessed the Dark Web and immediately saw two private messages.

One was from the Dark Web’s administration, a simple message: someone was looking to commission him for an assignment, a specific requested job.

It was exactly as speculated—the mission required Gao Yi to use a hammer to eliminate the target, and the only reason not to open it up to the public was to prevent the target from becoming aware of a bounty on their head.

The fee was five hundred thousand dollars. The target was a farmer in the United States, almost unprotected. The employer just wanted someone to smash the target’s head with a hammer.

Such a job didn’t require consideration; whatever the reason, it wasn’t Gao Yi’s concern, but he would never accept a hit on an ordinary person.

The second private message was interesting. Luca must have seen this one and called Gao Yi to remind him.

The target, leader of an African-American gang in Los Angeles, the requirement, to crush the target’s head with a hammer, the bounty two hundred thousand dollars, Dark Web escrow.

At a time when one needed to make a name with a strong personal style, an appropriate job came along. Although the fee wasn’t high, this job could make his name.

Gao Yi pondered deeply, and Chen Guangxin spoke softly beside him, ’What, got some business?’

’Mentor, there’s a hammer-specific task, pays less but can make me famous. Do you think it’s worth accepting for the fame?’

Chen Guangxin nodded, speaking softly, ’Depends if you want money or fame. If it’s fame, then of course, you can take it. But since they specified the method, that means they really need you. You could ask for more money.’

Right.

Gao Yi immediately called Luca back, then spoke softly, ’For the one with two hundred thousand, negotiate the price, however much they can add. I’ll take it.’"
