Chapter 548: Chapter 527: The Wonderful Person

Martin’s matter is just a to-do item; what’s urgent now is to finish the task at hand.

The one who really needs to put in effort is Christopher, because he has immediate authority.

The promotion matter for Martin could motivate Christopher, but not enough to drive him significantly, because he’s genuinely planning to retire and no longer has much interest in promotions.

However, money can move Christopher.

To Gao Yi, the signal he needs to send is simple—that Martin is one of his own, someone worth investing significant resources and funds to support.

Whereas Christopher is just a collaborator. Collaborators don’t share deep ties but can directly take money—a lot of money.

"My people are ready; they’ll appear near Rana’s house and toss something into Rana’s place—a fake bomb."

Christopher nodded and said, "If there’s a bomb, then I can go to the scene to gather evidence."

Gao Yi nodded and continued, "We won’t wait for Rana to call the police; we’ll report it first. You’ll arrange things on your end at the station. When the time comes, I’ll dress as a cop and go in with you. All I need is an opportunity to speak with Rana alone, and then I’ll prepare one million dollars. You can distribute it among the participants."

Giving Christopher one million dollars meant he could decide who gets what. No matter how much he distributes, the remaining amount is his to keep.

Christopher was a seasoned corrupt cop. But precisely because he was a veteran, Christopher wouldn’t go too far—he knew better than to withhold what should be given out, or he wouldn’t have lasted this long in his role.

"One million?"

Christopher was slightly surprised by the amount, as it was indeed a generous sum.

But thinking about how casually Gao Yi allocated ten million dollars as a budget to pave the way for Martin, Christopher no longer found one million to be such a big deal.

Christopher chuckled and said in a low voice, "That’s quite a number... Well, I’m retiring soon. A promotion would be a waste, but... I’ve got a friend."

Isn’t that how connections work?

Christopher had no personal desire for promotion, but he had relatives and friends, even successors among his accomplices. Just because Christopher didn’t want a promotion didn’t mean others didn’t.

And this was exactly the effect Gao Yi wanted.

In the future, Los Angeles was to become the Garden’s backyard.

"What position does your friend hold now?"

"I have many friends, and a lot of reliable ones too. But for this job in Beverly Hills, it just so happens I have a good relationship with the chief of the Beverly Hills Police Department, and he’s still young."

If trouble was to be stirred in Beverly Hills and Christopher coincidentally knew the station’s chief, it was almost too convenient.

Gao Yi couldn’t help but comment, "That convenient?"

Christopher smiled and said, "Not a coincidence. It’s just that I know nearly all the precinct chiefs in Los Angeles. The Beverly Police Station’s chief happens to share a good relationship with me. I think you two should meet and work together."

Gao Yi nodded seriously and said, "We should definitely meet."

Christopher checked his watch and said, "Then I’ll give him a heads-up. What time is the operation?"

"Eight o’clock tonight."

"Alright, I’ll prepare police uniforms for you. Hmm, actually... given our relationship, the money isn’t necessary. But there’s another friend of mine, with a suitable age and rank. Could you give him a chance to meet with him?"

Old foxes are wise, and old horses are cunning.

Christopher was willing to use one million dollars to secure an opportunity—for someone else. Since the Beverly Hills station chief was his friend and could be involved in this operation, the arrangement naturally fell into place.

But for other friends who wanted an opportunity from Gao Yi, they couldn’t blatantly push themselves in.

Christopher showed tact, at least being willing to trade one million dollars for an opportunity.

And the real question arose: would Gao Yi spare that one million?

By Gao Yi’s standards, he wouldn’t skimp on this. But if Christopher was willing to use one million to vouch for someone else, that clearly meant the opportunity was worth one million.

Christopher didn’t do money-losing deals.

Gao Yi smiled and said, "Who is it?"

"Investigative Analysis Division, Third-level Police Director. He could have had a chance to become Deputy Chief of Police, but he lacks the background."

Christopher spoke somewhat indirectly but still conveyed the necessary information.

Christopher was an evidence specialist. The Third-level Police Director he referred to was the head of investigative analysis—essentially his superior.

However, Gao Yi wasn’t very familiar with the ranking system of the American police force.

He was only aware that the friend Christopher intended to introduce held an already high rank, and further promotion wasn’t something that could be achieved merely through seniority or accomplishments—it required connections and backing.

At least, that was how Gao Yi understood it.

"Alright, let’s arrange to meet him then."

Christopher stood up, speaking softly, "Please wait a moment."

Christopher intended to make the call away from Gao Yi, for a simple reason: this was a spur-of-the-moment decision. He hadn’t discussed it with his superior, so he avoided making the call in front of Gao Yi out of concern for the boss’s reaction.

Christopher stepped away, keeping just enough distance for Gao Yi to overhear his conversation while preventing Gao Yi from catching the superior’s voice on the other end of the line.

"Boss, it’s me. There’s an operation tonight, and I’m giving you a heads-up."

It wasn’t clear what was said on the other end, but after a brief pause, Christopher deliberately lowered his voice and said, "This operation will yield one million dollars... Let me finish! You need to understand, this time I’m working for a BOSS. Do you understand? You get what I’m saying?"

Christopher heavily emphasized the word "BOSS."

After a moment, Christopher continued, "Good. I’ve told the BOSS we don’t want money; all I ask is for you to meet with him once. You understand what I mean, right? Yes, the money is a lot, but it’ll be distributed among many people. Isn’t it better to exchange it for an opportunity? You know what this implies."

Christopher was indeed a shrewd man.

"Alright, the operation is at eight tonight, Beverly Hills Police Station. Be ready, and after it’s done..."

Gao Yi shook his head.

What a joke—to ask Gao Yi to seek an audience with a Third-level Police Director? That was far too generous.

It should be the other way around.

Christopher lowered his voice and said, "When it’s done, I’ll introduce you to the BOSS. He can clear all the obstacles in your way. So, know your place and act accordingly."

Having dealt with Christopher relatively little, Gao Yi now realized that Christopher wasn’t just clever; he was also quite the character.

Gao Yi nodded in satisfaction.

Christopher hung up and said to Gao Yi, "It’s all arranged. If there’s nothing else, I’ll head back to start organizing the personnel for the operation?"

Gao Yi smiled and said, "Alright, let’s move forward with the operation."

The target of tonight’s operation was Rana, but there was no mention of Rana throughout—because it simply wasn’t necessary.
