Chapter 477: Chapter 457: Visiting Relatives
Gao Yi has always had reservations about going home, fearing that once he returned, he might not be able to leave or might end up locked in a dark cell.
A dominant emotion, however, was a sense of apprehension as he neared his hometown. Although there were many beautiful yet unpleasant memories at home, the most important people in his memory were no longer there, leaving only some so-called relatives. What’s the point of going back?
But now, with Feng Biao having paved the way with an earlier homeward visit, Gao Yi felt that going back could be quite good.
He would go back to visit the graves and burn some paper offerings.
Besides, his status had changed. It’s like walking around clothed in silk during the night. Going back and showing off a little seemed quite appealing.
"Alright, I can go to Northeastern University."
Gao Yi quickly made up his mind, but he couldn’t just go back on a whim. He had neither a passport nor an ID card. Although not unregistered, he would still need a visa to return.
This should be easy to arrange, just by mentioning it to Huang Haisheng.
Gao Yi took out his phone and then said to the few people in the car, "It’s safe for me to go to Northeastern University, but what about you? Can you go?"
Gao Yi would be safe at Northeastern University, but it was different for Dani and the others.
This bunch, each and every one of them was a spy. It wasn’t that Northeastern University would deal with them, but rather whether they would be willing to expose themselves within Northeastern University’s field of vision. That’s why Gao Yi asked this question.
Dani immediately said, "I have no problem."
"Nor do I."
Xinfeng spread his hands and said, "Of course, I won’t have any problems. What I mean is, going to Northeastern University isn’t just about dodging the current Bitcoin turmoil. Why don’t you log onto the Dark Web from within Northeastern University’s territory? Let Andic Group know you’re at Northeastern University. What can they do about it? Send someone there to kill you? If so, I’d really admire their courage."
Gao Yi was stunned for a moment, then suddenly said, "Yeah, that would really piss them off."
Northeastern University is a recognized no-go zone for mercenaries.
Incidentally, it is also a no-go zone for assassins because of the excellent public security and extremely strict gun control measures. But these are secondary concerns. The primary reason is, in fact, racial characteristics.
An assassin from another country attempting to kill someone in Northeastern University would be signing their own death warrant unless they were fed up with living.
It’s not to say that it never happens or that it’s completely prevented, but by comparison, Northeastern University is practically an assassin-free zone.
"You can absolutely treat Northeastern University as a safe zone. With your good relationship with Northeastern University, you can come out to do what you need to do and then immediately return to Northeastern University afterward. In this way, what can anyone do to you? Even the Dark Web wouldn’t have the chance to kill you."
Xinfeng continued speaking, but Gao Yi was quickly shaking his head, "That won’t do, it’s not okay. I can’t cause trouble for the country. If I do that, the nature of my actions would change; it would mean I’m using Northeastern University as a shield. If this continues for too long, problems will arise."
Xinfeng’s suggestion wasn’t wrong per se, but it showed blatant self-interest. He still didn’t understand the invisible Oriental habit of keeping tabs on others for perceived favors.
It’s not that they won’t help you, but you can’t treat them as a fool, that’s the message.
Currently, Gao Yi is someone with contributions; in terms of personal relationships, Huang Haisheng owes him a favor, even if the account is settled, but still leaves a good impression, like owing a small favor.
But if Gao Yi treated someone as a shield, then over time, that could become problematic.
Gao Yi didn’t need to explain this to Xinfeng. He simply took out his phone and said, "I’ll make a call first to ask."
The call was to Huang Haisheng.
Huang Haisheng always answered the phone promptly, whether day or night, no matter what he was doing.
"Hello, good evening."
Huang Haisheng would just say hello without saying much else. It was one of their characteristics not to ask what you were doing or what matter you needed help with—none of that sort of talk.
Gao Yi whispered, "I want to make a trip home, is that convenient?"
"For a family visit?"
Huang Haisheng still asked. He needed to know why Gao Yi was going home because, well, although Gao Yi could be a big help, he could also cause major disruptions. If Huang Haisheng didn’t want to lose this good friend and business partner, it was better to make things clear.
"Yes, for a visit."
"Convenient, of course, it’s convenient."
"Uh, it’s a last-minute thought. I’m currently in Berlin, but I’ve just finished a job. You know what I do, right?"
Gao Yi didn’t make it explicit, but Huang Haisheng should know what his job entailed. If it’s just after finishing a job, it’s definitely not something good.
Huang Haisheng paused again.
Though Gao Yi’s request wasn’t too excessive, it placed Huang Haisheng in a position where he could not make a decision because there are limits to everything. Everyone has standards and levels, and Gao Yi’s level was too high.
For Feng Biao, everything was easy; Huang Haisheng could manage it himself, but Gao Yi was different; Huang Haisheng’s level wasn’t high enough to handle it.
Moreover, if Gao Yi had just performed a shocking feat and couldn’t take the heat himself, running to Northeastern University would be bringing trouble there.
"I’m truly sorry, but I need to consult my superiors about this. Can you wait a few minutes?"
Huang Haisheng decided to be straightforward; he didn’t want to use jargon, and he indeed hoped that Gao Yi could go home for the visit. So he quickly added, "In principle, there’s definitely no issue. It’s just that your status is too high for me to decide on my own. By regulation, I must seek approval."
"Alright, make it quick."
Gao Yi understood Huang Haisheng, so he didn’t say much and simply hung up the phone.
After hanging up, Huang Haisheng sprung up as if he had a spring installed under him. He popped up from his chair, gripped a specialized phone in his hand, and dashed toward the office door.
Bursting out of the office, under his colleagues’ astonished gazes, Huang Haisheng sprinted down the hallway to his superior’s office door.
He came to a sharp halt and knocked on the door quickly.
The door opened, and a young man whispered, "Mr. Zhao, please wait a moment, inside they are..."
"Meeting adjourned, everyone clear out, quickly!"
The secretary was stunned for a moment, the highest priority special case handling method: drop everything at hand, everyone clear out, even if they are colleagues, even if the people inside all rank higher than Huang Haisheng.
The door closed, the secretary went in, and after a mere dozen seconds or so, the secretary opened the door again and said, "Please come in."
Huang Haisheng rushed in.
The office, not a conference room, but here, a meeting of three was considered a small one, and a meeting of five was a big one.
Everyone had left through another door, but Huang Haisheng saw four teacups, all of them full, all steaming hot.
No time to clean up, no choice, Gao Yi’s rank was too high.
"What’s the situation?"
Huang Haisheng hurried to his superior’s desk and said urgently, "Mr. Gao called, he wants to come home for a family visit."
"Mr. Gao..."
The superior’s eyes lit up and said, "That’s good news!"
"But he’s in Berlin, just finished his work, he’s an Assassin, used to handling big cases, I’m worried he’s stirred up too big a hornet’s nest."
"No matter how big the hornet’s nest is, we must get Mr. Gao back!"
That said, the superior still picked up the phone on the desk and dialed a number, then said, "Connect me to Berlin."
Holding the receiver and waiting for a dozen seconds, the superior’s expression remained calm. Once the voice came through on the other end, he immediately said, "Has something major happened in Berlin? Or perhaps a significant case?"
"A recent incident, a Saudi Prince in exile was assassinated, the German authorities have not yet identified the killer, but have decided to lodge a protest with the Saudi embassy. The Assassin is at large and the police are pursuing and attempting to intercept him."
"Is that all?"
"That’s all we know for now, do you need more insight into the inner workings?"
"No need, that’s enough for now."
The superior hung up the phone and said to Huang Haisheng, "Invite Mr. Gao to come home for a family visit immediately! Arrange a welcome ceremony right away, a covert reception."
"Yes."
"No, wait a moment."
After considering for a brief moment, the superior suddenly said, "Cancel the welcome ceremony. It’s not appropriate for us to be too closely involved with Mr. Gao. Mind the distance, you are responsible for reception, have normal contact, normal interactions, normal transactions, just maintain a proper distance."
Huang Haisheng said in a low voice, "Aren’t we going to further develop the relationship?"
"No, it would affect Mr. Gao’s influence on the other side."
Many things and relationships are just like this, if you’re too close to one side, it distances the other, so, the best way is to maintain a proper distance.
Huang Haisheng knew this principle, he just needed to confirm it.
"Yes."
"Make the call, just do it here."
Huang Haisheng immediately picked up the dedicated line phone and called Gao Yi back.
The phone rang, Gao Yi answered, "Hello."
"Mr. Gao, welcome home for a family visit. Is there anything we should be aware of?"
Huang Haisheng was used to speaking in hints, a professional habit of his.
Gao Yi thought for a moment and said, "Ah, visas, for five of us."
"Just go to the embassy, any kind of visa will do."
"Uh, can we fly directly?"
"Of course, you must be able to, do you need me to arrange a plane for you?"
Feng Biao was to take the soonest flight, and it was even better for Gao Yi, Huang Haisheng could charter a private jet for him.
"No need, uh, yes, I’ll pay for it myself, nevermind, I’ll just charter a jet myself, let Saudi charter it for me."
Gao Yi was somewhat embarrassed, so he was uncharacteristically indecisive.
Huang Haisheng sincerely said, "Since it’s a welcome for Mr. Gao’s homecoming, transportation and accommodation should of course be provided by us. Any other problems?"
"Uh, well, we’re carrying some firearms, actually, they can be discarded, but there’s one, indeed, that can’t be left behind, what do you think about this..."
"Bring it, just bring everything, I’ll pick you up at the airport, no problem."
Breaking God knows how many rules, but previously Gao Yi had never engaged in such dealings with Huang Haisheng, so he wasn’t aware of how much privilege he was being given, in any case, he just knew he was being afforded great respect this time.
After thinking it over, Gao Yi decided there was nothing else and said softly, "Then there are no other issues, shall I make my way there now?"
"Mr. Gao, we are looking forward to and await your arrival, have a safe journey."
