Chapter 357: Chapter 341 Silent

"If we just hide from the artillery and wait, surviving half an hour is actually not too difficult, as long as luck is on our side, we probably won’t die."

"But if dragging out the time is advantageous for Gao Yi, then the enemy clearly cannot let them keep dragging on."

Gao Yi had just hung up the phone. He hadn’t yet decided whom to call next when suddenly an announcement from the War Axe Mercenary Group came through the intercom.

"The enemy has launched a surprise attack!"

The enemy hadn’t completed their fire preparation. That meant they didn’t have time to blow up every room yet, so why the sudden rush to attack?

Four armored vehicles, which had been accompanying the tanks on either side, were now suddenly charging straight toward the office building.

Gao Yi and his team didn’t even dare to lift their heads to look because as soon as they showed themselves, they would inevitably be spotted by the tank’s thermal imager, and the cannon fire would follow right after.

Suppressing their curiosity, they listened to the situation updates from their comrades hiding upstairs.

Now the people from the War Axe Mercenary Group were also Gao Yi’s comrades.

"Get out!"

The soldier leaning against the corner with a rocket launcher suddenly spoke, then turned around, knelt on one knee, and aimed at the window. Although his head was still below the window, he was ready to fire the rocket launcher.

Feng Biao asked with concern, "Can you fire a rocket launcher from this room?"

A closed room or one too cramped wasn’t suitable for firing a rocket launcher, as the shock wave from the tail flame could seriously harm the shooter without sufficient space.

And the room where Gao Yi and his team were hiding was not large.

"I won’t die."

The shooter spoke again, in a low voice, then continued, "Move it!"

Gao Yi and the others could no longer afford to crawl, so they got up and quickly left the room they had been hiding in for so long.

"The enemy continues to approach, speeding up! Do we engage?"

The War Axe members were urgently calling out updates, and the decision to engage was now up to Donkey.

Without any hesitation, Donkey commanded, "Each to their own battles, watch the timing, fire!"

Hearing Donkey’s command to fire, the shooter who had shared a room with Gao Yi and the others abruptly stood up. He shouldered the rocket launcher and in a very short time took aim at the speeding armored vehicle. He fired, with a slight lead on his target, and after traveling nearly a hundred meters, the rocket hit the front of the armored vehicle dead on.

There was a loud boom, and one of the four side-by-side armored vehicles began to slow down as thick smoke started billowing from the front.

But almost at the same time, right after Gao Yi and the others had left the hiding room, they heard a rapidly successive popping sound from behind them, followed by a thunderous explosion.

The blast wave from the explosion doesn’t just knock people down.

It was as if someone swung a hammer from behind, a very large hammer. Gao Yi was flung forward and slammed heavily onto the ground.

Turning his head, he saw nothing but a cloud of dust.

The soldier who had just said he liked being with the rookies was dead.

There was no need to see it to know; no one could survive in a room that had been hit by an artillery shell.

Feng Biao lamented with a hint of regret, "What a waste of a rocket launcher, sigh!"

Feng cared that the shooter had brought two rocket launchers, but clearly, he only had time to use one.

Gao Yi’s mindset was completely different.

What is a battlefield?

The battlefield is where the person who was just talking to you suddenly vanishes, disappears, ceases to exist.

At that moment, a rocket was fired from the second floor.

An RPG-27 perhaps couldn’t penetrate the frontal armor of an M1A2, but destroying an armored vehicle was all too easy.

"Destroyed!"

Another shout came through the headset and, without any surprise, a shell quickly struck the room from which the rocket launcher had been fired.

Fire and move, but the enemy’s response to these two shots was too quick. They locked onto the shooter’s position as the rocket was fired, then fired a shell right after the shooter fired, with no time left to dodge.

"Cook is down."

"Ruler is down."

Two brief and successive voices came over the intercom, one of them was Donkey’s.

"The enemy is dismounting and advancing on foot, the enemy has no protection, I repeat, the enemy has no protection!"

The soldier observing the enemy kept reporting, no matter how fierce the battle, as long as he wasn’t dead, he would continue to watch and report on the enemy’s movements.

But at this point in the battle, even Gao Yi couldn’t lift his head to look outside.

As they faced the onslaught in a full-fledged battle, Gao Yi, an unmatched expert in close combat, felt utterly powerless.

"Steady, keep cool, it’s not our time to strike yet, hold steady!"

Feng Biao was whispering softly, knowing there were two rookies in his team who had never truly been on a battlefield. They needed an experienced soldier to guide them right now.

At this point, no one was afraid anymore.

"Wait for the enemy to get close, wait for them to get close, when the tank guns can’t fire, then hit..."

Feng Biao was still saying.

Why not simply let all the enemies come over before attacking? It was because it would be the best solution if they could destroy all of the enemy’s armored vehicles before they got close.

Striking at mid-crossing and destroying all of the enemy’s armored vehicles on the way without sustaining any casualties would certainly be the best outcome, but now the result of the engagement was that the War Axe Mercenary Group had fired four rocket-propelled grenades, hit two armored vehicles, and then ran out of good opportunities to continue firing rocket launchers.

Not every rocket-propelled grenade could hit its target; the War Axe Mercenary Group having destroyed two armored vehicles with four rockets was already an exceptionally good performance.

It wasn’t that they didn’t want to, but that they couldn’t; it was impossible to destroy all of the enemy’s armored vehicles.

"The enemy is getting close!"

They could only let the enemy come closer and then fire; the advantage was that the enemy tanks couldn’t fire for the time being, but the disadvantage was that they didn’t know to what extent the enemy infantry would go.

Two armored vehicles rushed to the front of the main hall in the middle of the office building, it looked like they intended to enter through the hall, and before the enemy’s infantry alighted, the tank fired at the building for the last time.

Two consecutive explosions, the enemy tanks fired at the hall again, as the last fire preparation for the infantry entering the building.

The rear doors of the armored vehicles opened, and soldiers in four columns jumped out from the rear of the two vehicles, then ran into the office building.

"Machine guns ready, prepare to meet the enemy... fire!"

At Donkey’s command, the remaining few members of the War Axe Mercenary Group opened fire at the same time.

The firepower was not dense, but it was sufficiently accurate.

The War Axe Mercenary Group had machine guns; it’s just that they had not been needed until now in the previous combat. At Donkey’s command, a machine gun jutted out of a window, firing wildly at the soldiers leaving the armored vehicles from the side.

There was also a machine gun firing from the second floor, but its target wasn’t the soldiers launching an assault below; instead, it targeted the soldiers that had alighted from the armored vehicles that had been hit, situated a little further away.

"You stay in the corridor, don’t move!"

Feng Biao instructed Gao Yi and the others, then suddenly stood up with a low roar, saying, "Fire!"

Feng Biao was a sniper, but he was just as accurate, and faster, with a rifle.

The tanks couldn’t fire their cannons, but they could use their mounted machine guns for suppression; the two armored vehicles that had stopped beneath the building were also using their mounted machine guns to shoot wildly at the hall.

Fire first; it didn’t matter if they could see anyone.

The dismounted soldiers fell to the ground one after another; they couldn’t enter the building, and an armored vehicle could carry only about ten soldiers. Under such a rapid and precise onslaught, about twenty men from the two vehicles were simply coming to their deaths.

The combat capabilities of the Iraqi soldiers were really not strong, and what was most fatal was that not a single one of them wore a bullet-proof vest.

"Retreat!"

Feng Biao had only fired half a magazine; he fired continuously, but after less than two seconds, he quickly tucked his rifle away and dashed out of the room with his head down.

Bullets suddenly entered from the window behind Feng Biao, shattering everything and sending debris flying everywhere.

Feng Biao slid into a slide tackle, he sat down on the floor and then slid out, his thigh scraping against sharp cement fragments, and blood immediately began flowing from under his leg.

"Left side, left side!"

Feng Biao urged urgently, and it was at this moment that Gao Yi realized that Lin Xianghua had quietly left the group at some point. As Feng Biao shouted "left side," rapid gunfire erupted from the room on their left.

It was also a burst fire, long bursts, but it lasted just over a second, then Lin Xianghua ran out quickly, bending at the waist, and suddenly ducked behind a wall, crying urgently, "Right side, right side!"

Bullets entered the window, passed through the door, and hit the corridor wall, leaving a large hole at each impact. Suddenly, bullet holes appeared in the wall, and the small, splattered fragments hit Gao Yi’s face, stinging him painfully.

Shoot once, change location, because enemy retaliation came very rapidly.

"This could not have been done by the Iraqis!"

Feng Biao said decisively to Gao Yi while Lin Xianghua urgently said, "Mechanized infantry, not regular infantry! They can’t fight indoor battles."

The enemy’s tanks and armored vehicles had arrived, and the soldiers carried in the armored vehicles belonged to mechanized infantry, who rarely fought urban warfare. It wasn’t that they couldn’t fight at all, but mechanized infantry weren’t suited for urban combat.

Accompanying tank units in wide-ranging flank maneuvers, fighting field battles, and engaging in larger conflicts—these were the affairs mechanized infantry were meant to engage in.

Gao Yi didn’t understand why the enemy would do this, so he urgently said, "Why? What does it signify?"

Feng Biao and Lin Xianghua both said in unison, "Cannon fodder!"

At that moment, Gao Yi heard Donkey’s roar.

"Behind us! Watch your back!"

Not far away, he could hear shouted by Donkey. It was also audible through the headset.

A feint?

That’s when Feng Biao urgently said, "The observer is dead! He’s gone silent! Watch your back!"

Gao Yi understood; the person who had been giving them updates until now, if he wasn’t dead, would at least warn his comrades about the enemy’s movements. If he were wounded, at the minimum he would remind them so that his comrades could take over his role.

Silence meant death, he was likely dead.

Feng Biao stood up and ran to a room on the other side, meanwhile urgently saying, "Hold them off this wave, hold this wave! Move up, everyone move up!"
