Chapter 354: Chapter 338: Change Guns

Donkey had already made his own decisions on such matters, and he certainly wouldn’t ask Gao Yi for his opinion, especially when it came to life-and-death decisions like fighting or withdrawal. Donkey definitely couldn’t let Gao Yi make the call.

In the world of mercenaries, earning respect was incredibly simple and direct, as respect had to be fought for.

Regardless of whether Gao Yi was a mercenary or not, he had managed to earn Donkey’s respect with his fighting, so Donkey immediately used a more consultative tone with him.

Gao Yi’s thought process was straightforward: if he could run, of course, he would run.

"We’d run if we could! But how do we deal with the enemy’s helicopters outside?"

If they could escape by vehicle, tanks and armored vehicles would likely not be able to catch up. However, the problem was the remaining enemy forces outside, equipped with helicopters.

Unless they took down the helicopters first, driving away would be suicidal, and without vehicles, trying to escape on foot would be even more certain death.

Donkey obviously understood the difficulties of escaping, and after a brief hesitation, he said in a low voice, "We’ll destroy the enemy’s helicopters first, then run!"

Donkey’s answer was so simple it was hard to believe.

Gao Yi had never been one for plans, and if he had any, they were the simplest kind. Now, the plan Donkey had provided was just as simple.

Since the enemy had helicopters, a direct escape would be a death sentence. Therefore, the solution was to take down the enemy helicopters. What could be wrong with that?

Gao Yi felt there was no problem; the logic was clear and the solution straightforward.

"Alright, let’s destroy the enemy’s helicopters as quickly as possible!"

The two men made a quick decision, perfectly in sync.

Gao Yi found the mercenary style very much to his liking. He said to Feng Biao, "I need to resupply my ammo and fill up on hand grenades, bring a few extra this time."

Feng Biao urged, "Use a rocket launcher, what good are grenades against helicopters? Carry a rocket launcher over."

Donkey was increasingly impressed with how refreshingly decisive this boss was. Another boss might have hemmed and hawed, let alone join him in battle.

Donkey shouted, "Get the rocket launchers, quick, hurry!"

He ordered his men to fetch the rocket launchers and then grabbed the radio, speaking urgently, "War Axe calling Lego, enemy reinforcements are arriving soon. If you want a smooth withdrawal, you need to join us in destroying the enemy’s helicopters. Roll out your anti-aircraft machine guns and provide us with firepower support. You don’t need to launch the assault, but be ready to cover us if you want to withdraw."

Now was when the Lego Mercenary Corps could prove their worth.

Everyone was extremely busy because time was running out. If they could take out the remaining British forces before the enemy’s tanks arrived, then everyone could withdraw safely.

If they couldn’t finish it before the enemy tanks arrived, the fight would be tough.

These simple truths were well understood by all, so there was no need to push or to lay out the pros and cons for anyone. It was a race against time.

But then came the horrible ’but.’

Just when Gao Yi and his men were preparing to complete all preparations in the shortest possible time, a soldier from the War Axe Mercenary Group suddenly said over the radio, "Lego’s run off!"

Gao Yi was stunned, but Donkey just sighed and shook his head.

A War Axe soldier, carrying a rocket launcher in each arm, placed them against the wall and frantically said something to Donkey in Russian.

Donkey shook his head, answered his subordinate’s question in Russian, and then the soldier, looking crestfallen, picked up the rocket launchers again.

Donkey looked at Gao Yi and said, "The Lego Mercenary Corps knows you’re the target; no one cares about them. If they leave us behind to attract the enemy, they can easily escape. Now it comes down to professional ethics. Sadly, the Lego Mercenary Corps has no professional ethics."

The expensively hired mercenary corps wanted to flee, and Gao Yi was out of options.

He couldn’t even see what the Lego Mercenary Corps was up to at the moment.

But he couldn’t stay silent. Gao Yi grabbed the radio and urged, "Lego Mercenary Corps, if you can hear me, respond!"

The radio remained silent, as the Lego Mercenary Corps obviously didn’t intend to respond to Gao Yi.

Donkey, standing nearby, said, "Why be so polite with them, what’s the point of being nice?"

After speaking, Donkey snatched the radio from Gao Yi and barked, "Lego! I know you can hear me. Listen well, if you dare to run, I will find Peterlov, and none of you will escape!"

It was a direct threat, but after saying that, Donkey tossed the radio back to Gao Yi, saying, "It’s useless, it’s all useless now. This group was cobbled together on short notice. Lego may be able to assemble into any shape, but it also falls apart with a touch. You can use them to fight when you’re winning, but forget about relying on them to fight to the end."

Damned if that wasn’t true.

Time was already extremely tight. If they could quickly wipe out the remaining British forces and create even a brief window of a minute or two, the withdrawal would be much easier.

But now, with the Lego Mercenary Corps fleeing without even engaging in the battle, fighting became much more difficult.

The rocket launchers specifically designed to counter tanks were brought out, but now there was a problem; there were only eight one-time use RPG-27 rocket launchers.

Two rocket launchers per box, four boxes in total, eight rocket launchers, but there were six transport helicopters outside, four tanks soon to arrive, and eight armored vehicles.

"That is to say, if you fire a rocket at the helicopter, it would be good if you could run after firing, but if you can’t run, then you have no means to deal with tanks either."

Gao Yi looked at Donkey, asking very seriously, "What do we do now?"

Donkey sighed and said to his men, "How far are we from the helicopter?"

"Three hundred meters! The enemy transport cluster is landing three hundred meters away, with soldiers protecting the front."

Donkey couldn’t help scratching his neck, then he whispered to Gao Yi, "I hope your reinforcements arrive soon. Right now, our only choice is to hunker down and wait for help."

Gao Yi, puzzled, asked, "Aren’t we going after the enemy’s helicopter?"

Donkey shook his head and said, "The RPG-27 is a short-range, heavy-duty anti-tank rocket. It’s powerful, but its range is only two hundred meters. The price we’d have to pay to destroy the helicopter is too high."

Gao Yi was taken aback because he hadn’t known that the RPG-27’s range was only two hundred meters. He had thought the range of rocket launchers was more or less the same.

What to do now? If they still had to fight, they would need at least a gun.

Gao Yi had handed his gun over to Donkey earlier, and Donkey then casually passed it to Lucy.

Gao Yi sighed, accepted the pistol but smoothly handed it back to Lucy.

A light pistol that you’re not accustomed to, and most importantly, one that is not accurate, what good is an inaccurate pistol? Just to scare people?

Gao Yi drew his pistol again. The gun had jammed earlier, and he had to deal with it. Not to mention, it still had a chambered round that could cause trouble if it discharged on its own.

At that moment, Donkey had intended to crouch down next to the prisoner to conduct an emergency interrogation. It would be a waste not to ask anything when they had a captive.

But Donkey’s brow furrowed once more when he saw Gao Yi drawing his pistol again.

Gao Yi operated the slide, which was originally smooth but now felt rough, like pulling through sand or pebbles.

He worked the slide and the unfired bullet popped out. Gao Yi blew inside the slide and then released it; it seemed to return smoothly into place, sliding without the previous roughness.

Gao Yi aimed the gun at the roof and pulled the trigger.

The gun fired with a snap, firing smoothly this time.

Gao Yi immediately felt much more at ease, but to be sure, he pulled the trigger again. This time, though, it produced a strange, slight click, and then silence.

"Damn it."

Gao Yi was anxious; his most reliable gun was not working—what was going on?

Feng Biao commented from the side, "It doesn’t seem like a slide issue; it’s the firing pin."

Finally, Donkey said, "It’s not a problem with a single component; the whole thing is malfunctioning. This gun is too precise. Precision makes it unfit for the battlefield. Low temperatures, dust, even a bump can cause it to fail. Everything a competition gun seeks is detrimental on the battlefield."

Donkey stood up again, extended his hand to Gao Yi, who obediently handed his gun over.

After feeling the action of the slide, Donkey spoke urgently, "Fine gun, nice grip, exquisitely crafted... But who would bring such a gun to the battlefield?"

After giving Gao Yi another disdainful glance, Donkey put the slide back into place, engaged the safety, and continued, "Stop cleaning it. It’s a meticulous and lengthy process. This gun is heavy, intentionally weighted, right?"

Gao Yi responded softly, "Yes, I’m not used to light guns."

"It’s not about habit; isn’t it your gun skills that are the problem?"

Donkey hit the nail on the head with his remark, then he drew his own pistol, saying very seriously, "If you can only use a heavy gun, try mine."

Gao Yi took Donkey’s pistol.

It was heavy, much heavier than the Glock—solid in his hand.

"What kind of gun is this?"

Gao Yi genuinely didn’t recognize Donkey’s pistol; he thought it might be Russian.

Donkey said softly, "SIG P210, all-steel frame. Not many people use such heavy pistols anymore. It’s highly accurate, but after my modifications, the accuracy is somewhat reduced, yet reliability is extremely high."

As he spoke, Donkey became proud and pointed at Gao Yi, saying, "I’m lending it to you in case you have no personal defense weapon. But use it well, and remember to give it back to me."

After that, Donkey returned Gao Yi’s competition pistol, and added, "Don’t bring this gun to the battlefield again!"

What could Gao Yi say? Could he say that he was an assassin, not a mercenary, and that’s why his gun suits him best?

But having a working gun is certainly better than carrying one that might jam at any moment.

"Thanks."

The pistol and holster didn’t match very well, but Gao Yi would make do; he didn’t want to switch holsters as well.

Donkey kicked the prisoner, who was still motionless, and said, "You awake? Now answer my questions. If you talk, I can just kill you swiftly. If you don’t, you’re going to suffer, understood?"
