Chapter 351: Chapter 335 Strange, Really Strange
The enemy was on the east side of the office building, and they could block three sides of the building.
The Lego Mercenary Group was on the west side of the building, and they too could block three sides of the building.
This office building was a target that both sides needed to protect, as well as a target that both sides needed to guard against, and then, this office building also served as a firewall for both parties.
It was clearly a trap, but in the end, it turned into a messy fight where each side had elements of the other infiltrated within, to be honest, it required skill to turn a fight into the current state it was in.
The British forces dared not extend their encirclement to both sides of the building now, and the Lego Mercenary Group hiding in the factory didn’t dare leave to provide support; in short, both sides could only watch as their comrades fought each other inside the office building.
So, Gao Yi chose to jump from the window of the room located on the furthest west side.
He jumped out sideways from the second-floor window, landing lightly, and just before he touched the ground, he threw the mine he was holding through the window of the first floor.
Upon hitting the ground, he did not roll or do a somersault, but instead bent forward and sprinted a few steps, which put a great strain on his knees; after running a few steps, Gao Yi made a strange sidestep to get as far away from the blast range of the mine as possible, then suddenly threw himself to the ground, muttering lowly, "Boom!"
With a thunderous boom, the mine exploded inside the room.
The force was too strong, had the building not been constructed during war times and been very sturdy, this explosion would have brought down a portion of it.
The blast wave carrying fragments of the wall rushed out of the windows, and while the reinforced concrete frame didn’t collapse, the brick-filled walls burst instantly, enveloping Gao Yi in a dense cloud of dust.
Gao Yi had underestimated the power of this explosion; despite having run far enough and dropped quick enough, he still felt like he was going to die in this blast.
It was too frightening.
Fortunately, he had taken cover far enough away and on the south side of the office building rather than the north side where he had thrown the mine.
He had blown up the north side of the western end, but took cover in the south side of the western end, and then the entire wall of the north-side room disappeared, but the south-side wall remained intact.
Gao Yi got up from the ground, shook his head, wiped the lens of his night vision device, and with a trail of dust kicked up behind him, charged towards the large hole that had just been blown open.
He couldn’t rush in headlong because the room was in complete disarray from the explosion, with several adjacent rooms utterly destroyed, leaving piles of debris that hindered Gao Yi from advancing.
If there had been people inside, they must have been blown to pieces; at this moment, there was no need to worry about encountering enemies.
Gao Yi labored through the scattered cement blocks and broken bricks, the dust outside was beginning to clear, but the indoor dust would not dissipate for a while.
The thick dust cloud obstructed the view provided by the night vision device.
The thermal imaging combined with the full-color view provided by the camera was now just a blur of gray, practically blind, as even the thermal imaging couldn’t penetrate the dust, providing Gao Yi a vision that was extremely blurry and extended at most three meters.
The larger suspended particles were the main obstacle blocking the night vision device, but larger particles also fell more quickly.
Gao Yi navigated through the rubble, and having moved about the distance of one room, he saw through his night vision device a complete wall ahead, and also heard hurried footsteps coming from the front.
The footsteps were fast, no visuals, but quick, because Gao Yi’s location wasn’t on the hallway, he was in a destroyed room, so he couldn’t see the enemy rushing through the intact corridor.
Underfoot lay debris, highly disadvantageous for Gao Yi to utilize his strengths, such as swift and unpredictable footwork, rapid and ghostly movements.
Therefore, Gao Yi stopped; he raised the pistol in his hand, aiming towards the direction of the sounds.
A red silhouette abruptly burst through the thick dust, starkly appearing within Gao Yi’s thermal vision.
The distance was no greater than five meters, and it was almost instantaneous for the blurry figure to become clear, the light intensifier lens completely unable to penetrate the dust, so Gao Yi could only see a red thermal figure, unable to make out the enemy’s specific attire or discern whether the enemy was equipped with protective gear like a bullet-proof mask.
No choice then, he had to shoot for the face.
Gao Yi pulled the trigger, and the gun made a peculiarly soft noise, not even the sound of the firing pin striking, but rather as if the firing pin couldn’t position itself properly, it was unclear what was stuck.
This gun was ill-suited for the battlefield because of its extreme unreliability; everything was made with racing-grade parts, hand-polished, so if the gun fell into sand, or sand entered the space between the hammer and the slide, it was guaranteed to jam.
A pistol with high accuracy, very short firing intervals, and minimal reacquisition time for aim, yet certain to jam if sand got inside.
The gun hadn’t fallen into sand, but the dense dust could cause it to jam all the same.
In the moment the gun failed to fire, Gao Yi finally believed it.
Even the faint sound drew the enemy’s attention.
The enemy, gun in hand, swiftly aimed in Gao Yi’s direction, and immediately unleashed a burst of fire.
Gao Yi wasn’t panicked; the instant the gun made the soft noise, he began to crouch without moving his feet at all, ensuring he made no noise by kicking debris and maintaining stability.
To Gao Yi’s surprise, although he had spotted the enemy, it seemed the enemy hadn’t seen him.
It made sense, after all, Gao Yi was using top-tier gear that even the US Army hadn’t equipped on a large scale. As for the British Army... well, it was hard to say.
The SBS likely had decent equipment, but what kind of night vision device the ordinary Marine Corps troops were using was really up for debate. To say that their devices were just one generation behind Gao Yi’s was generous—two generations would be normal, and three wouldn’t be surprising.
The enemy had blindly fired a burst of bullets upon hearing a noise, and after shooting four or five rounds without hitting anything, the enemy had stopped firing after that blindly shot round. He then whispered, "There’s a noise."
Gao Yi had no desire to perform a scene from a play called "Three Forks" with the enemy.
Gao Yi crouched down, picked up a chosen piece of debris—a fragment of a cement brick about half the size of a fist—threw it vigorously while pulling out the hammer as his arm naturally fell back down.
The brick struck the enemy’s face with a loud bang, and the enemy let out a cry of pain as he reeled uncontrollably backward, his gun barrel tilting up.
The enemy staggered back two steps, then frantically pushed his gun barrel down, roughly aiming in Gao Yi’s direction.
As Gao Yi pulled out his hammer, he charged towards the enemy, his speed rapid as he dashed forward, even as he let go of the hammer and caught it by the handle in mid-air.
Let’s just say he performed a "hammer dance", since a knife flourish is called "swordplay", it only makes sense to call it a "hammer dance" with a hammer.
The ultimate hammer swing.
Indeed, his footing wasn’t stable, but Gao Yi had it under control, most importantly, the Kung Fu in his hands was never weak.
As the enemy once again aimed his gun at approximately where Gao Yi was, Gao Yi’s hammer had already swung horizontally, reaching an inch below the enemy’s ear.
There was a muffled ’thud’.
The standing enemy made no sound as he fell.
There were two other men behind the enemy Gao Yi was attacking, which Gao Yi noticed as he rushed forward.
Now that one enemy was down with a single blow, Gao Yi was ready for the possibility of bullets hitting his bullet-proof vest for the first time, but he was astounded to find that the enemy’s gun seemed to have jammed.
The three men were in a triangular formation, one in front and two behind. Because of the angle, Gao Yi had not seen the men at the back, but those two had also failed to see Gao Yi. By the time Gao Yi had suddenly burst forward to strike down the enemy in the front, the enemy on the left reacted quickly and aimed at Gao Yi, but the enemy on the right seemed panicked.
Oddly, Gao Yi’s gun, which was a competition pistol not suited for battlefield conditions, had jammed, but it was strange to see the enemy’s standard-issue rifle suffering the same fate.
Strange, truly strange.
Gao Yi dodged to the right and surged forward, hammering down. This time, the hammer collided with a helmet, finally creating a loud ’bang’.
The enemy holding the jammed rifle fell instantly.
The enemy to the right, finally acting in his panic, fired, but Gao Yi allowed it because the enemy’s shots posed no threat.
Had it not been for the fastest downwards swing, Gao Yi would have swung horizontally. It was easier to change direction and continue attacking that way. But after striking the enemy to the left dead with one blow, swinging his hammer to knock the enemy’s gun barrel aside, then pulling back in a swift motion, he smashed the hammer at an angle into the enemy’s neck. Then, the third enemy lay down immediately.
Gao Yi couldn’t help but take a closer look at the enemy’s rifle.
It was an L85.
The Marine Corps, also considered an elite unit in the British military, using L85s?
Strange, really very strange.
Gao Yi holstered his pistol.
Despite the jam, he was reluctant to discard it; after all, this gun wasn’t always used on the battlefield.
With a casual toss of the hammer in his right hand, he reached out with his left hand to grab it, then pulled a hand grenade from his chest and flung it with a swift motion. The grenade traveled on a flat and straight trajectory towards the approaching enemy.
Now that the battle had commenced, even the slowest enemy would realize a major incident had taken place here.
Gao Yi swiftly took cover at the doorway of a room that remained intact despite the explosion, watching the hand grenade explode at the enemy’s feet before pulling out another one.
Holding the grenade but not throwing it, Gao Yi whispered, "Don’t rush down here. I’m suppressing the enemy. Wait until I eliminate the threat, then you come down."
He hadn’t counted on the mine actually killing all the enemies. Gao Yi came down to act as a surprise element, creating chaos among the enemy and disrupting their defensive formation.
But the real issue was, Gao Yi’s specialty suited the current combat perfectly; he didn’t just come down, he came in, and he didn’t just come in, he stood his ground.
Not only did he keep his feet, but he also pinned the enemy down.
Lest Gao Yi, their precious financier, be confused in this moment.
The Donkey wanted to order a continued assault according to the original plan.
Just then, Gao Yi whispered lowly, "I’m invincible in close combat."
