Chapter 347: Chapter 331 Mutual Destruction
Are Russians a warrior race?
Yes and no.
Saying that Russians are a warrior race implies their affinity for war, but asserting they aren’t reflects their poor prowess in battle.
Russians often turn a simple battle into a messy one, frequently achieving Pyrrhic victories, yet somehow, they always seem to win.
The most formidable thing is, Russians truly aren’t afraid to sacrifice lives in battle; they dare to use human lives as mere fillers in a pit.
The two mercenaries sent by Donkey each strapped a bag over their shoulders, which contained at least five or six hand grenades, and then they began to move stealthily downward, and just as they were about to move out of Gao Yi’s line of sight, the one in the front suddenly pulled the pin from a grenade on his chest.
First, pull the pin of the grenade, then charge downward immediately.
Gao Yi thought these two men might be planning a countercharge, but he never expected that they would actually perform a suicidal charge.
Are they that brave?
The moment that grenade-laden soldier charged downward, a burst of gunfire erupted from the first floor. Gao Yi couldn’t see the final outcome, but six seconds later, he heard a thunderous explosion.
The entire building shook momentarily, but that was all, and after the explosion, Gao Yi could even hear faint moans coming from the first floor.
Gao Yi peeked out again, and the soldier stationed around the corner on the second floor reached out several times, hesitated, and when it looked like he was about to hesitate again, he increased the force in his hand and pulled the pin of his grenade.
Then, the second soldier staggered downward.
First, he pulled the pin, turning himself into a bomb, and with his death certain, he charged out with his gun.
It was unclear what damage the first suicide had caused, but clearly, it inflicted harm on the enemy and significantly deterred them.
The second soldier who went down managed to open fire, and Gao Yi, counting quietly, realized he had fired at least six shots, indicating he had run down the stairs, seen the enemy, and had a chance to shoot.
But with the grenade pin pulled, regardless, he only had six seconds.
There was another massive blast, and the entire building seemed to shake once more.
At this point, including Donkey, War Axe Mercenary Group had merely eight men left.
Donkey now held an AK74 in his hands.
With a wave of his arm, Donkey brought four men close to the staircase, but this time he didn’t make them charge down festooned with grenades; instead, they quietly waited.
Time slowly passed, and the enemy downstairs never launched an attack upward, seemingly deterred by the two suicidal assaults.
But these two suicide attacks had only bought five minutes.
Or rather, these kamikaze counterattacks had kept the enemy at bay downstairs, too scared to initiate an attack for a full five minutes.
Time, time is everything, Gao Yi had said that without electronic interference, he could call for reinforcements, and reinforcements would certainly come. Thus, Donkey tried everything to delay them.
From this perspective, trading two lives for five minutes during which the enemy couldn’t attack was worth it.
If the British had recklessly attacked upwards, those five minutes would have resulted in many more deaths, not just two.
What was meant to happen would happen.
The British might be looking for safer, more convenient ways to attack; five minutes could also be their prep time to re-initiate an attack.
Or perhaps, the British would ultimately have to use the escape route through the roof that they had left behind.
Just like any building must have a passage leading to the roof, Gao Yi’s building certainly had one, and with the British having helicopters, they could easily land on the roof and attack from above.
The reason the British hadn’t done so could be because they knew such entries were often traps.
That was indeed the case; following Gao Yi’s instructions, the War Axe Mercenary Group had set a bomb at the only entry to the roof.
Although it was initially prepared for the CIA, knowing it was very likely that the CIA might use a helicopter to airborne, and descending from the roof was a common tactic, it would be foolish not to guard against that.
But now, with the lower attacks stymied, the British might think about using a pincer move; they had helicopters, and presumably, they kept a reserve force, so staging a pincer movement was feasible.
But wait, although there was a bomb on the fourth floor, was anyone guarding it?
Unable to help himself, Gao Yi looked upward.
The path leading to the rooftop was not directly connected to the usual staircases, so Gao Yi definitely couldn’t see it, but as he looked up, he heard a thunderous roar and felt a vibration strong enough to bounce him off the ground.
With a booming sound, the explosion caused continuous tremors throughout the entire building, which emitted a sustained and faint sound. The white ash from the ceiling, along with chunks of cement, began to fall, and the whole building started to fill with fine smoke and dust.
The explosion on the roof had occurred, but just as Gao Yi thought it was over, another thunderous noise came from above, not from an explosion, but from the sound of the collapsing ceiling falling down.
The magnitude of this blast was astounding; an anti-tank mine, coupled with the C4 boosting the mine, had generated such incredible force.
Gao Yi had always thought that the fourth floor had been unguarded, but after the explosion, he realized that War Axe Mercenary Group indeed had a solid operational plan, leaving some personnel behind.
Now Gao Yi feared the whole building would collapse.
Fortunately, the building and the factory had been constructed in 1987, during the Iran-Iraq War, and buildings constructed during wartime were generally more robust.
After a while, a voice came from above.
"I’m coming down, don’t shoot."
Knowing that the people below were currently dealing with an attack, the person coming down made a vocal reminder first. After his voice echoed, a man covered in dust staggered down the stairs.
From the way he walked, it was clear he had been severely shaken by the explosion; it felt like a stroke of luck that he hadn’t died.
After passing by Feng Biao, then around the corner where Gao Yi stood, the dusty man shakily made it to the second floor, exchanged a few words with Donkey, then began to ascend unsteadily again, his steps feeble, not knowing whether he had suffered internal injuries.
The explosion upstairs had caused the enemies occupying the first floor to delay their attack once again.
As the dusty soldier passed by Feng Biao, Feng couldn’t help but ask in a low voice, "Can you still hear?"
The soldier looked at Feng Biao and asked, "What’s up?"
The soldier had earplugs in, which protected his eardrums and saved him from losing his hearing after the explosion.
Feng whispered, "What’s the situation?"
"The enemy’s about to enter. The bomb was manually detonated. Hmm, loaded with too much explosive, more powerful than expected. Blew a big hole in the roof, and another bomb detonated sympathetically."
After explaining the situation on the roof, the dusty soldier continued his ascent, prompting Feng to hurriedly ask, "How many of you are still up there?"
"Two."
Two people had stayed upstairs to keep watch, which meant the War Axe Mercenary Group wasn’t down to eight; they still had ten men.
Without further discussion, the man covered in white ash continued slowly up the stairs, his pace slow but his steps loud.
The clomping of footsteps would certainly be heard by the enemies below.
The suicide counter-charge had delayed the enemies for five minutes, and the rooftop explosion had further delayed them by three minutes, but now, the enemies were finally gearing up for a hard push.
A direct assault was definitely disadvantageous, with heavier casualties, but if they dared to advance, then the high-ground defenders weren’t necessarily safe.
It was all about the casualty exchange ratio; if the attackers could achieve a ratio of three-to-one, they would consider it a win.
Two soldiers in camouflage began their assault upward, and a Russian at the stairwell immediately threw a hand grenade down. At this point, showing your head almost certainly meant getting struck, but at the same time, in this intense test of reaction speed and face-to-face shooting and grenade throwing, it was also a huge test of psychological strength for both attackers and defenders.
The mental fortitude of the War Axe Mercenary Group was exceptionally strong, but Gao Yi noticed that the attacking soldiers also had robust mental strength.
"Falk You!"
"Suka Bule!"
Both sides hurled insults and grenades, opened fire simultaneously, and then two British soldiers, clearly used as decoys, were both shot— one fell backward sliding head down, and the other slumped against the wall and stopped moving.
But the Russian guarding the stairwell dragged his gun in one hand and began retreating slowly while another comrade, a few meters behind, quickly moved forward to take his place.
The two British were probably dead, but the Russian, despite having the higher ground, had also been shot and injured.
The Russians were strong, but the British were definitely not weak.
Gao Yi felt that the agents from the Military Intelligence Sixth Department were just rubbish compared to these formidable, anonymous Marines who were incredibly strong.
Once the combat had commenced, there was no stopping it. The British wouldn’t back down after sacrificing two men.
As the Russians completed their positional switch, two more British soldiers charged forward, guns raised.
One grenade fell down—one British soldier kicked it away, while the second grenade bounced down the stairs; unable to kick it too, the soldier in front threw himself on top of the grenade, and it exploded beneath him.
The British behind him exchanged fire with the Russian who had thrown two grenades and then opened fire. A burst of blood exploded onto the Russian’s head, he ceased firing, and his body pitched forward, kneeling motionless on the ground, while the British soldier, despite being hit by at least five shots, sat heavily on the stairs, catching his breath and shifting his legs to clear the path for others.
The stairs were wide, but lying lengthwise on them was definitely better than blocking the way.
Two soldiers continued their ascent past their injured comrade.
One could say every step was soaked with blood, but the British were plentiful, and most crucially, their resolve was strong.
Gao Yi really started to wonder; could the things he had done in London really have enraged the British to such an extent?
Finally, Donkey roared, "Fire!"
And as Donkey shouted, Feng Biao suddenly exclaimed with joy, "Communication’s back! Communication’s back!"
