Chapter 298: Chapter 284: Going to Die
Today, Gao Yi finally understood what a true master looks like.
He had underestimated the heroes of the world, but now he realized what a real tough fight was supposed to be like.
Is it really unavoidable and irresistible?
Gao Yi was still in the alley; he wanted to go back and see what had happened. Now, as the only strong fighter, if the enemy had broken through the rear defense line, the wounded soldiers left in the room could not fight.
Gao Yi hurried back to defend.
Both Li Jie and Feng Biao aimed their guns at the tunnel exit, and Lin Xianghua pulled the pin on the second hand grenade just as he let it go.
Suddenly, bricks flew and dust filled the air.
Watching the dust spurt out from the door with a loud bang, Gao Yi, who was running back, felt weak in his legs and almost fell to the ground.
It was over.
Standing at the tunnel entrance, Lin Xianghua was knocked backwards by a strong force, and Feng Biao felt darkness before his eyes as a helmet-sized fragment hit him, nearly knocking him unconscious.
However, Li Jie aimed his gun toward the direction of the wall and started firing while yelling, "Breach the wall!"
No one could understand what Li Jie meant at first.
Among them, Li Jie had the most experience in indoor combat.
Most of Gao Yi’s actions were indoors, but he had only been involved in five or six skirmishes, and he had never really fought a tough battle; he mostly cleared small fry.
But Li Jie was different.
He had been in Aleppo for just over a month. It might not sound long, but Li Jie fought several battles every day.
Surviving twenty-four hours on the battlefield made you a veteran, surviving a month made you an elite veteran who had been through hundreds of battles.
Li Jie had seen all sorts of situations and experienced all sorts of scenes.
Using explosives to breach walls wasn’t incredibly common in Aleppo, maybe once a day on average, compared to direct artillery shots or simultaneous rocket fires, explosives breaching tactics were indeed rare.
But Li Jie had breached others and had been breached himself.
In similar situations, both Feng Biao and Lin Xianghua, who were also veterans, had never experienced such scenarios, but Li Jie wasn’t afraid.
The first moment, he opened fire where the enemy might enter, pressing down the first wave at all costs, because if the enemy got through, it would be truly over.
It was hard to see; the dust was too thick, but it cleared quickly, and Li Jie soon saw the large hole opened in the wall.
From the shape of the hole, the condition of the wall when it was blasted—whether it was pulverized or a whole piece fell down—and the size of the hole, one could assess the skills of the breaching enemy.
The enemy was formidable.
The enemy was indeed formidable, as Li Jie observed the neatest and most intact breach he had ever seen.
The breach was rectangular, and the wall had fallen inward.
The enemy blaster was an expert.
The judgment was too simple: the force of the explosion was just right, perfectly creating a breach without excess force that would shatter the wall or collapse the entire room.
Someone might ask why not increase the power and simply kill everyone inside the house.
The answer is simple, if they had the capability to bring down the entire fortress, they would do so, but if they couldn’t, then they would simply make a door to break through.
Since it’s about making a door, you cannot destroy the door itself, as it would cut off your own path of attack.
And to achieve wall-breaching and entry, personnel couldn’t be too far away during the fight, so the blaster’s abilities were crucial.
Collapsing the entire building was easy, just pile up enough explosives.
A simple test of the wall’s thickness, knowledge of the materials and construction method, followed by controlling the explosion power to be just right, breaching the wall, opening the door, breaking in, quickly clearing the confused enemies inside, and creating an entrance—this was the basic process of wall-breaching.
The enemy had a clear target, appropriate tactics, and a highly capable blaster—everything was perfect.
But they had just faced Li Jie, who hadn’t been out of Aleppo for long.
Whether a hurricane or a tornado, all their wall-breaching tactics combined didn’t match Li Jie’s experience, because if the CIA had to breach walls every time to accomplish their objectives, then the CIA might as well disband.
So this time, the savior of the world was Li Jie.
He fired, suppressing the enemies who should have surged in after breaching the wall.
Because breaching the wall itself could maximally injure and disrupt the enemies, there was no need to throw a hand grenade immediately after the breach but to enter at the first opportunity, which Li Jie suppressed perfectly.
Then, as the enemies outside guarding the breach realized they were being blocked by bullets and thought of throwing hand grenades to kill the enemy, Li Jie’s hand grenade was thrown first.
A slow step leads to slowness at every step.
It might have only required a split second longer to react, not even a full second, to think of using a hand grenade to clear the way after encountering resistance. But by that time, Li Jie had already fired off all the bullets in his magazine and had thrown a hand grenade through the breach first.
Well-trained, quick to think of what to do when facing situations.
Experience, especially the kind gained from battling through dead bodies, meant knowing what to do without even thinking.
A quick step hastens every step. The moment Li Jie finished firing and threw the hand grenade, even Feng Biao and Lucy, slow as they were, knew what to do.
And Feng Biao and Lucy weren’t slow at all.
Even Luca, who lacked combat ability, knew to grab a hand grenade and throw it through the enemy’s breached spot.
Feng Biao threw a hand grenade, and Lucy fired more than ten bullets towards the breach, then listened as a pain-filled moan, instinctive yet swiftly suppressed, came from outside.
From outside the breach, a hand grenade was thrown in. The grenade bounced off the carpet and then fell into the opened tunnel.
That was purely luck.
By then, Gao Yi had finally rushed into the room, hesitating for a moment whether to deal with the enemies outside first or to drag the immobile people to safety.
At that moment, the sound of gunfire intensified again.
Four people rushed out of the neighboring room, two attended to Khalid who lay unmoving on the ground, and two shouting in Arabic. Seeing the big hole in the wall, they seemed to go mad, brandishing their guns and rushing towards the breach.
This was Khalid’s stronghold after all. Although caught off guard initially and baffled by the attack, the situation had slightly eased, and they quickly launched a fierce counterattack.
But it was clear that the act of rushing out was suicidal.
The first person to dash towards the breach in the wall fell without even a grunt at the portal.
Gao Yi didn’t even know what was on the other side of the breach – whether it was a carpet factory, a warehouse, or just an empty space. Not knowing the basic terrain made it difficult for him to make a decision.
But now Gao Yi understood why the so-called Hurricane and Tornado had launched such a desperate attack from the start.
The enemy was outnumbered. Attacking Khalid’s stronghold, they had to resolve the combat quickly. Any disadvantage could lead to them being surrounded.
Just like now.
In Gao Yi’s view, these hopeless Anti-American Armed Forces were usually disorganized mobs that would scatter at the first sign of trouble, usually after a couple of them died. But now, Khalid’s men, not outstandingly capable, displayed a surprisingly strong fighting will.
They could actually fight to the death without retreat, fight to the very end – this was completely unexpected to Gao Yi.
Three more men rushed in.
These three must have been hiding in the operation room earlier, now eagerly storming into the room held by Gao Yi and his team.
Without any communication or coordination, these three men entered, each looking bitterly vengeful as if facing the murderers of their fathers, heedless of what might happen when they charged out.
Two of them fired at the breach, and another, without a gun, was carrying a backpack that Gao Yi recognized.
The backpack contained explosives, the kind that ten men who went to hold the carpet factory area had carried.
Gao Yi’s eyes widened as he instantly exclaimed, "Get out!"
Lucy looked down, pulling Lin Xianghua, who didn’t move at all – it was unknown if he was dead.
Lucy grabbed the arm, and Luca stepped forward to seize Lin Xianghua’s leg; together, they dragged Lin Xianghua and dashed out the door.
Feng Biao hopped out on one leg, while Li Jie, although able to shoot and throw hand grenades, was slow moving. Gao Yi, in a rush, lifted Li Jie on his shoulder to rush out.
As Gao Yi carried Li Jie out the door, he saw the man with the backpack lower his head, silently hugging the backpack and charging toward the breach created in the wall.
Such bomb backpacks were made for instant detonation, whether by pull or any other messy triggering method, so there was no chance of throwing the explosives pack.
Gao Yi, carrying Li Jie, immediately sidestepped.
A massive explosion ensued, and a blast wave carrying bricks and dust burst from the doorway Gao Yi had just left.
The explosives hadn’t brought down the building, but the blast was powerful; the man carrying the explosives pack was surely dead, as were the other two covering for him and the two who had gone out earlier, all undoubtedly killed in the blast.
In just an instant, five people were dead.
Then, Gao Yi saw the doctor – the one who had been performing surgery on Joelson. The doctor was now kneeling beside Khalid, administering emergency aid.
And at that moment, intense gunfire blared from the high-rise building across the street, where clearly some of Khalid’s men were firing down at the CIA operatives.
Then, the doctor finally shouted, "He’s just fainted! He’s not dead!"
That was great. Khalid wasn’t dead.
With this, if they could withstand the initial and most fierce assault, the subsequent actions were sure to be much simpler.
