Chapter 280: Chapter 267: Got You
The emergency landing was a success; the plane began to decelerate dramatically on the runway.
The plane had already reduced to a safe speed, which wasn’t too fast. According to a typical emergency landing procedure, the plane should have already taxied towards the waiting rescue vehicles.
Of course, if the plane had crashed or caught fire upon landing, those rescue vehicles would have come to it on their own.
Now, the situation was this: the plane needed an emergency landing, but there was no fire, nor was there any risk of explosion, so the plane continued to roll forward down the runway.
There were no lines of soldiers on the ground, no armored vehicles or tanks, nor any covetous crowds.
At the end of the runway, there were only fire trucks and ladder trucks, along with ambulances, making it seem very normal.
Gao Yi began to doubt himself, saying uncertainly, "No, this doesn’t look like an ambush, nor does it appear that anyone is waiting to capture us."
Luca began to doubt his judgment too, saying with a serious face, "Am I overthinking it?"
"If you feel there is a problem, then there must be a problem. Even if there isn’t one, it’s better to handle it as though there were."
Only Feng Biao could say such a thing.
Feng Biao spoke grimly, "Can Libya afford to take responsibility for shooting down and making a French transport plane land? No, so of course there would be no mass of Libyan soldiers on the airport. And the Americans, even if the whole world knew it was the doing of Americans, would they admit it? No, so of course the Americans wouldn’t line up a bunch of soldiers on the runway."
Gao Yi nodded again and again, saying, "That makes sense, but the situation seems a lot better now."
"No, the situation has become worse."
Feng Biao heaved a sigh and continued, "If the runway were filled with soldiers, we would completely lose the possibility of escape, and the enemy wouldn’t have to take any particularly violent measures. But since it appears to be deserted, it means they can’t be sure of catching us. As soon as you show any intention of running, they’ll have to use whatever means necessary to catch you."
While speaking, the plane suddenly turned on the runway.
This was a military transport plane designed with the capability to take off and land on makeshift runways, and the grass between airport runways was even smoother than that of makeshift airfields, so leaving the runway wasn’t a problem at all.
Then, those quietly waiting rescue vehicles suddenly started up.
Four fire trucks and two ambulances left the waiting area and raced down the runway, intending to get in front of the transport plane to block its escape route.
At this moment, everything became clear.
What had felt somewhat covert before was now blatantly obvious.
It was only then that Gao Yi realized, "Why would there be four or five ambulances for just a military transport plane with only two crew members?"
These ambulances weren’t there for rescue; they were meant to be troop carriers.
But the fleet of rescue vehicles split into two, and their purpose became unclear.
The way forward for the plane was blocked; no matter what, the landed transport plane couldn’t possibly be as agile or fast as a car.
The transport plane’s pilot was quick-witted, realizing they wouldn’t make it to the planned spot near the perimeter wall, he decided to stop the plane before the intercepting vehicles arrived.
The electric side cargo door opened. Unlike commercial planes, military transport aircraft came with their own stairs for personnel, sparing Gao Yi from having to jump down.
The cargo door opened, and a gust of hot air rushed over him.
Gao Yi rushed down the aircraft steps, three at a time, then without looking back or pausing for even a moment.
The plane had stopped earlier than ideal, much further from the target spot - Gao Yi estimated at least six or seven hundred meters.
For this distance, even if he ran with all his might, it would take three minutes, because Gao Yi wasn’t running empty-handed; he was fully armed, with a weight of about twenty kilograms on him, and that was without carrying a long gun. If he had a rifle and all its ammunition, the weight would be another ten kilograms heavier.
Gao Yi didn’t grab a gun, nor did he go for the hand grenade, because he was at least three hundred meters away from the approaching vehicles, and at that distance, having a gun would be useless.
The convoy coming to intercept the plane consisted of four fire trucks and two ambulances.
According to Gao Yi’s assessment, the ambulances were crammed with soldiers, but even at capacity, they likely held no more than six or seven people each. As for the fire trucks, he didn’t know their layout, but if there were only people in the cabs, then there probably wouldn’t be too many people.
Once out of the cabin, the radio became operational.
Feng Biao’s voice came through the earpiece.
"They’ve split up, one ambulance is trying to intercept you, the rest are coming for us. With just one vehicle, you stand a good chance."
The plane had stopped, and only one person had disembarked and was running away. If Gao Yi were on the other side, he too would surely allocate a small team to intercept.
There really was a great opportunity.
Suddenly, Gao Yi felt it might not be right to just keep running because if he only cared about running, the enemy could shoot from the vehicle and easily riddle him with bullets.
In this situation, he should get close to the enemy.
The thought flashed through Gao Yi’s mind, and then he immediately stopped running, raised his arms, and appeared to surrender.
While Gao Yi made these movements, Feng Biao also spoke urgently, "Stop running, pretend to surrender and look for an opportunity... uh."
