Chapter 227: Chapter 215: Self-abandonment
"Leave the guns and everything in the car, then have two people dress in casual clothes and go rent a car," he said.
Those two had to be Gao Yi and Lucy, because Lucy could speak French.
They rented two Peugeot 308s and then the six of them happily switched vehicles.
At that point, they could speak freely.
Luca wasn’t an impatient person, but right now, he felt a kind of restlessness he couldn’t keep under control.
"I always knew that the problems with the Garden were related to the Dark Web, but I didn’t expect the Dark Web to get directly involved now! Damn! The Dark Web and the Andic Group are essentially one and the same. How can we ever rebuild the Garden now? There’s no hope left!"
Luca was somewhat in despair right now. He was grateful that he had been safe up to this point, but it also puzzled him why he was still unharmed.
"Why hasn’t anyone tried to kill me, or capture me? Could it be that I’m so insignificant that’s why I’m still alive?"
Luca had uncovered the truth, but this truth was a bit painful to accept.
The Garden was already ruined, and the reason for its downfall was their attempt to create a European Dark Web, which led them to be eliminated by the Andic Group.
Later, Sean struggled to maintain the Garden, but he was incapable of presenting any substantial threat to the Dark Web, so they ignored him too.
Then, Sean found Gao Yi, brought new life to the Garden in an unconventional way, and found a way for the Garden to survive. This prompted the Dark Web to decisively move in and completely deal with the last formal Gardener.
Gao Yi had taken over an incomplete Garden and was working with an identity he didn’t fully understand, in ways he couldn’t fathom, doing work he didn’t know how to do.
Then, the Sky Garden was born, and it was there that Luca gained some recognition and raised his own value.
Thus, Luca, a significant figure of the Sky Garden, became a target for elimination by both the Dark Web and the Andic Group. Only then did he receive the same treatment as Sean.
But Luca, though a target for elimination, was not the main target; he was merely bait for fishing.
After all, he was still just an underling; the Dark Web never considered Luca the soul of the Sky Garden.
Realizing this, Luca suddenly let out a relieved breath and whispered softly, "This is good too; it’s not so dangerous now."
Gao Yi didn’t know what to say, so he just lightly remarked, "Do you think we’re out of danger now?"
"At least we’re not safe yet."
Luca thought for a moment and continued, "Right now, we’re not sure if the Andic Group can continue tracking us, but I think it won’t be easy to shake them off. However, as long as the French aren’t directly involved, our situation is much better."
"Yes, if it’s just the Andic Group, we don’t have to worry too much. Now, we need to think about where to go next."
Running away was certain, telling Spain they were heading to the UK was just a casual comment. Gao Yi was thinking about how to escape quickly, not actually planning to have a showdown with the CIA in the UK.
Gao Yi pondered and said, "Where to go? Ideally, a country not under direct control of the United States. Europe won’t work, the Middle East is problematic; how about Africa? Or perhaps, let’s just go back to Liberia, to Suakoko. It’s quite chaotic there now; we could head to Liberia."
Gao Yi made a suggestion, not because he liked Liberia, but having been to Suakoko before, he was somewhat familiar with the place, and that was the first option that came to mind.
"Liberia is under complete control of the United States, and have you forgotten? The CIA’s presence in Liberia is very strong."
After saying this, Luca’s face was filled with helplessness, "The world is too peaceful now, it’s not good."
During peaceful times, of course, the assassin industry has the advantage, and the mercenary business does not have as many opportunities.
Unlike a few years back when wars were raging, it was too easy to make a living as a mercenary.
"Pull yourself together, don’t rush to lament about world peace now; first think about how to avoid the joint pursuit of the CIA and the Dark Web, then we can think about the future when we’re safe."
Gao Yi had to remind Luca.
Luca thought for a moment and said, "We’ll just drive around aimlessly, as if we’re touring France."
Gao Yi shook his head and said, "That won’t work; we’ve left too many traces behind. The National Intelligence Bureau is still being chased, and I suspect whether they can escape successfully. Besides, the Spanish interior is not entirely united; someone has leaked information to the CIA. They’ll know we are in France very soon."
It couldn’t be said that escape was impossible, but they were indeed far from safety.
Luca said with a helpless face, "Haven’t you noticed I was imitating you? Just wander aimlessly, after all, in the end, it’s resolved bizarrely."
Gao Yi was speechless because his thoughts were exactly that.
Since he didn’t know where to go, he might as well start running around randomly.
As long as they were on the move, it was definitely better than staying still in one place.
Luca continued with a helpless expression, "Although we changed cars, the information we left when renting the car is enough for us to be easily found. Now it’s about beating the clock, changing cars again before we are found, and continue wandering aimlessly. This way, it’s much better to be unpredictable. So, just decide wherever you want to go. Maybe after running like this for a few days, we’ll naturally shake off the pursuit."
"If you’re going to put it that way, I won’t be polite then. Let’s head to Paris, first in the direction of Paris. Once we’re there, see if we can catch a plane out. We’ll leave France and head to Russia first. The CIA won’t have it so easy operating in Russia."
"What if we’re discovered and intercepted in France?"
"Do we even have to talk about it? Of course, we’ll fight first. If you ask me, the CIA won’t react that fast. We’re not rookies. Be a little careful on the way, and we should..."
Gao Yi wanted to say they should be fine, but suddenly, Lucy said, "We must have been followed."
Gao Yi, who was driving, looked at the rearview mirror, while Luca turned his head to the sides.
Lucy continued indifferently, "They’re not behind us, it’s the car ahead."
A black Renault was in front of Gao Yi’s car, looking unremarkable.
Luca said with a puzzled face, "Is there anything unusual? I didn’t notice."
Lucy was very serious, "That car didn’t signal when it passed us."
Luca almost laughed and couldn’t help but say, "You must have just learned to drive, mate. It’s pretty normal for seasoned drivers to change lanes without signaling."
But Lucy was still serious, "But there’s an ’A’ sticker on his car."
The ’A’ sticker in France signifies a novice driver.
Gao Yi and Luca looked at each other as Lucy continued, "A beginner wouldn’t change lanes without signaling."
Luca couldn’t help but say, "A car with an ’A’ sticker isn’t necessarily driven by a novice."
"Then why would he have an ’A’ sticker?"
Gao Yi felt it was pointless to explain these things to a woman who had just learned to drive, and besides, he was a novice too.
However, faced with Lucy’s seemingly laughable idea, Luca suddenly fell silent before becoming visibly tense, "Yes, something’s off. At the next intersection, don’t signal. Just make a sudden multilane right turn. If the car ahead doesn’t follow, then no problem, but if it does, that’s bad."
There were plenty of intersections, and Gao Yi quickly reached one. He was in the middle lane but then suddenly jerked the steering wheel and turned out.
Then Gao Yi and Luca watched as the car in front abruptly slowed down and then crisply turned around to head the opposite way, forcing a left turn to keep up with Gao Yi’s car.
"There’s definitely a problem!"
Gao Yi exclaimed in alarm, while Luca gritted his teeth, "The car in front is not following any basic surveillance rules; either they’re not killers, or they’ve decided to make a move."
Once the car ahead realized its cover was blown, the rear window suddenly rolled down, and a stream of bullets started sweeping out from inside.
Gao Yi made a sharp turn while leaning to the right to decrease the chance of getting hit.
Gao Yi and his team twisted around, with Feng Biao and Lin Xianghua following behind, and as the leading car barely turned and opened fire, Feng Biao and Lin Xianghua also started shooting.
A high-speed car chase coupled with a gunfight instantly ensued.
Where the enemy came from was unknown, how they caught up was unknown, what they planned to do next was still a mystery.
Gao Yi adapted quickly to the sudden turn of events, but Luca was furiously upset.
"What’s happening to this world! Killers don’t act like killers, and cops don’t look like cops."
After a cry of despair, an angry Luca urgently said, "Take them out! Just take them all out! No point in asking; just do it."
