Chapter 215: Chapter 203 At My Side
Having become an assassin right out of the gate, Gao Yi’s experience was indeed very limited.
Under the premise of being watched, how to initiate actions, how to counterattack, especially if one might have already been targeted in secret—these were things Gao Yi genuinely didn’t understand.
But Feng Biao was different; Feng Biao was a sniper. On the battlefield, he was the kind of person who absolutely could not be discovered, for if he were discovered or targeted, what followed would be artillery and machine guns.
Feng Biao’s senses were incredibly sharp—that was his talent, his super talent.
Now that Wind Vane had hinted at a situation, Gao Yi immediately tensed up, feeling even more anxious than if he had spotted something unusual himself.
"Don’t move, don’t be afraid."
Feng Biao didn’t make any move, he just smiled and said in Chinese, "Being under surveillance is quite normal, I suspect this whole area might be under watch, but it hasn’t reached the point where guns are drawn on us yet."
Gao Yi exhaled softly and then cheerfully asked with a grin, "Where are they?"
"Don’t know, we’ll have to try and find them."
"Do you need to find a prone position?"
"No need, although I’m not too familiar with assassins and agents, our current situation is more like our old undercover investigations. Making a noise now would spell absolute failure. It would be best if we could find the other party’s people and quietly take them out."
Feng Biao took a sip of his coffee, then put down the cup and continued to smile, "There are only so many suitable spots for surveillance. Our current position is quite good, one that must be taken, and the building across from the hotel is also a good spot. I’m not clear about distant locations; I need to observe the surrounding terrain specifically."
Gao Yi didn’t look back or glance around. When Feng Biao said their café was a good vantage point for surveillance, he had already discreetly checked it out more times than he knew.
Gao Yi’s technical support came from the Defense Clandestine Service. However, as a newly established intelligence unit, Grins’ subordinates did not especially excel in operational roles; after all, his action teams consisted of mercenaries like Peter and his crew.
What Grins excelled at was intelligence analysis; he also understood some operational tactics. These were the basic skills Gao Yi could access for now.
Martin’s counterintelligence abilities might be somewhat stronger than Grins’, but Gao Yi felt that Martin was not entirely reliable at the moment. Out of human nature concerns, he temporarily kept his whereabouts and the purpose of his trip a secret from Martin.
Gao Yi smiled, "We are not contacting Iron Rooster; Old Ghost has already arrived. Big Brother has given him some errands, so he could deliver them anytime, then..."
More and more foreigners were learning Chinese these days, but in most cases, Chinese was still a safe language that could be spoken openly in front of many foreigners, without much worry of being understood.
Then there was a principle: in face-to-face conversations with Feng Biao, Gao Yi never mentioned anyone’s names, including Luca, Shaman, Xianghua, and the person he was about to mention, Li Jie.
Iron Rooster was Luca, Big Brother was Shaman, Xianghua was Ah Gui, but what codename to use for Li Jie?
In the past, when the situation wasn’t this dire, they called each other casually, but now it was different. Now the person sitting behind them drinking coffee might be a CIA agent or an assassin from Andic Group. Even if they couldn’t understand Chinese, if they recorded the conversation, mentioning names here could mean endless trouble.
Gao Yi stopped the conversation and simply called Li Jie.
"Hey, where are you?"
"On my way, I’ll be there in another two hours."
"Alright, what should I call you? You understand what I mean, right?"
"Oh... I get it, you’re asking for my nickname?"
"Right."
"Xianyu, my close friends call me Xianyu."
"Got it. Understood."
After hanging up, Gao Yi turned to Feng Biao, "That person is called Xianyu, remember that."
"That’s quite a remarkable nickname, Xianyu, got it."
Gao Yi nodded and continued, "Xianyu is bringing my personal gear; he’ll be here in two hours."
Feng Biao touched his face and thought for a moment, then said, "We can’t wait that long; why don’t we start with just us for now? Still the same plan: I’ll get in the car with Old Ghost, stay highly mobile in the vehicle, ready to fight or flee as necessary."
"Okay, I’ll keep watch here. But Berserker doesn’t have any gear, so he’s pretty useless. Later, have Old Ghost come here to pick you up, leave a couple of signaling devices for Berserker. I won’t take any for now. Then, have Big Brother’s men start leaving gradually to see if any tails follow."
With the arrival of Feng Biao, they could go fishing.
Gao Yi didn’t have any weapons on him, but he was adept at solving problems with his bare hands, so he wasn’t concerned.
Feng Biao picked up his coffee and took another sip, then smiled, "Alright, I’ve been travelling hard and I’m tired. Let me sit and rest a bit, drink a coffee to refresh myself."
At this critical moment, Feng Biao actually needed to rest.
This was a show of confidence and a display of ability, as Feng Biao dared to say that once he was in good shape, he could ensure that every shot counted—something most people wouldn’t dare to claim.
Gao Yi gestured invitingly, "Take your time. Want something to eat?"
"Just a cake would be good."
Gao Yi turned around, waved to get the attention of the server and spoke to Lucy, who then passed the message to the server, ordering a chocolate cake for Feng Biao.
While Lucy and the server were talking, Gao Yi observed the surrounding people with as normal a posture as possible.
There was no anomaly, not a single one.
The server quickly brought a small piece of cake. Feng Biao, sipping his coffee, began to leisurely eat the cake with a small fork.
While Feng Biao ate the cake, Gao Yi enviously said, "How are you managing with your wives? I’m just wondering—your legs aren’t getting weak, are they?"
Feng Biao seemed to choke for a moment, lifting his coffee cup to take a sip. After hesitating, he actually whispered, "Yeah, a bit weak in the knees, actually."
"Fuck this shit..."
Gao Yi didn’t know why he would curse at Feng Biao.
Feng Biao spoke softly, "You think I’m enjoying this?"
"It sure doesn’t look like you’re suffering."
"It’s not suffering, just a hassle. I settled them in Saint Petersburg, rented two apartments. The boss was coming, made me scold them all the way back."
"Who’s the boss?"
"The younger sister. She’s the boss, the one with the kid is second. Affection is affection, but there still has to be a pecking order. If it comes to marriage, I’d definitely register with the boss first, but the second one insists on a certificate too. She cries all day, driving me nuts. Everything else is negotiable, they can even share the bed, but this status, they both insist on it. It’s not an open fight, it’s a covert struggle. Man, what a mess."
Gao Yi took a deep breath and said, "No worries, hang with our Big Brother and you could marry four."
"Uh..."
Feng Biao paused then nodded, "Actually, I didn’t forget, just didn’t think about it. But I don’t want to live there, it’s too hot, too many rules."
"Don’t keep talking, it’s annoying."
Gao Yi waved his hand impatiently, "Just hurry up and leave after you eat, go rest somewhere else. Just seeing you now annoys me."
"Hey, hey..."
Feng Biao gave a sheepish smile, but suddenly he remembered something, "That’s not right. This isn’t your normal reaction. You’ve got an angel by your side, what other woman could catch your eye? How could you be jealous of my two tacky broads?"
Feng Biao, true to form, couched his suspicion in a jab.
Gao Yi turned slightly awkward, twisting his head, "I’m busy with important stuff, why bring this up now?"
"Oh... oh..."
"What’s with the ’oh’?"
"Nothing, nothing, just admiring the boss. Truly a man of honor and passion, that kind of determination is not something us mere mortals could match. I’m sincerely in awe."
Gao Yi asked puzzlingly, "Why are you suddenly spouting idioms?"
"I bought an idiom dictionary, I thought... you know."
"Right, I’ll buy one later too."
The two went on chatting random nonsense. Feng Biao ate his cake slowly. After about fifteen minutes, he finally wiped his mouth and said, "I’m done."
"Full?"
"Not hungry is good enough, full isn’t."
Gao Yi nodded and sent a message to Lin Xianghua,
"Come pick up someone."
After sending the message, Gao Yi said to Feng Biao, "Tell Ah Gui the specifics. On the car, talk to Berserker as well. Ears have walls, I won’t elaborate here."
Feng Biao nodded, and Gao Yi said to Lucy, "Get on the car with him."
Lucy didn’t understand Gao Yi and Feng Biao’s plan, but Feng Biao could explain it to her on the car. Anyway, Lucy’s role was just to fire her gun, she wasn’t needed for anything else.
After waiting a few minutes, Lin Xianghua drove up, and they all stood up. Gao Yi greeted the onlookers warmly, and then Feng Biao and Lucy got in the car.
Watching the car drive away, Gao Yi called over the café staff. With gestures and loud English, he said, "Clean this up. I have friends coming over. I’ll wait for them here, got it?"
Gao Yi was too loud.
His behavior was nothing like an assassin’s, let alone a spy’s, because everything he was doing at that moment was too conspicuous.
While highlighting his own abnormality, a few people sitting in the direction he faced glanced over. Most shrugged the look off quickly, their unfriendly glances betraying an innate disdain for shouting in public.
Gao Yi couldn’t analyse everyone’s gaze at once, but one middle-aged man seemed off to him.
Just a quick glance, but his eyes were devoid of emotions. Seeing someone shouting in a place meant to be quiet, that look should not have been so calm.
Gao Yi sat back down, turning his back to the person he suspected.
Then Lin Xianghua drove back again, stopped, and Lucy with a pout got out of the car and sat down next to Gao Yi, fuming. Feng Biao lowered the car window and said to Gao Yi, "She doesn’t want to go anymore, pal. Take your time comforting her, we’re heading off first."
Lin Xianghua waved at Gao Yi too and turned the car around, driving back the way it came.
Now, Lucy had two guns hidden on her.
Gao Yi asked puzzledly in English, "Why don’t you want to go?"
"I hate them. If all your friends are such assholes, then we might as well not continue our trip."
Lucy’s acting was decent, after all, it’s a basic skill. After ranting, she sighed and said irritably, "The person you’re waiting for better come quick, I’m losing my patience."
As she spoke, Lucy rested her face on her left hand, two fingers at the corner of her eye, appearing impatient, too unwilling to even look at Gao Yi. But in essence, this gesture signalled: people, two, on her left.
Lucy’s left side was also Gao Yi’s back. Gao Yi furrowed his brows and said, "I got it."
Whether Lucy or Feng Biao and the others spotted it from the car, there were suspicious people present, and it seemed that could now be confirmed.
