Chapter 190: Chapter 178 Full Surveillance

Ambushes can’t just be haphazard, having a prepared ambush is advantageous, yet if the enemy doesn’t take the anticipated route, then what?

It’s best to know the exact trajectory of the target, even if the ambush can only be set a few minutes in advance.

So now, just had to wait.

Past two in the morning, there were hardly any pedestrians on the road, and three Humvees towing twin anti-aircraft guns drove through the streets. Considering CIA’s intelligence capabilities in Baghdad, Gao Yi indeed worried about being discovered ahead of time.

But there was nothing to do about it, they just had to hope that towing the guns would make the CIA less concerned.

After all, daring to bombard the CIA on the streets of Baghdad was rare, gunfire was normal, but bombardment was over the top.

Because it was over the top, it was safer; there was only hope in that.

However, Mu Tianwen’s situation was both hopeful and worrisome for Gao Yi.

After all, Mu Tianwen was too young. Even if he was full of classical idioms, he still lacked sophistication in action.

But then again, Gao Yi felt that Mu Tianwen was merely inexperienced; relative to Harold, at least Mu Tianwen understood the principle of ’silence is golden,’ which was better than his father.

"We are entering the embassy now, over,"

Green said over the radio.

The White House gave permission, and the Pentagon took command to send someone to check the CIA’s dark cells, checking whether the CIA had engaged in any unauthorized actions, such as capturing Abdulla.

This was a rectification action, a soothing gesture from the United States to its wealthy subordinate, a bit of a slap in the face for the CIA, but compared to a military purchase worth several hundred billion, this soothing action had to be given.

The Saudi ambassador to Iraq was already waiting inside the U.S. embassy, he was there to initiate a diplomatic inquiry, and the U.S.’s way of showing sincerity was to agree to let military officials secretly accompany Green in the search.

This was a significant gesture, although merely symbolic; if the CIA really intended to hide Abdulla, they wouldn’t let them find him.

Regardless, the most likely move for the CIA was to transfer people out of the embassy, wanting to keep Abdulla under their control, then they’d find a place to keep him themselves; if they wanted to pass the hot potato, they’d hand him over to Harold’s compatriots.

So, a result had to come tonight.

Gao Yi and his team were not far from the Embassy; if there was any movement from the CIA, they would receive the news.

Green had people watching. As soon as someone left the embassy, they would report back to Gao Yi, and that person was Peter.

Peter was also an old acquaintance of Gao Yi’s, reliable.

Once out of the embassy, there was only one road, with two directions leading to junctions at both ends after a stretch; from there, the number of routing options surged, making an ambush more challenging.

However, with the Pentagon’s involvement, or rather the consequences thereof, they really had far too many surveillance methods available.

Baghdad’s downtown road monitoring?

Not needed!

The Pentagon could simply send a surveillance drone.

No need for intelligence personnel, no need for action teams, just keep two unmanned reconnaissance drones in the sky, tightly watching the embassy, instantly reporting any suspicious vehicles, making it impossible for a CIA vehicle to evade detection.

Previously, it was always the CIA using military drones to monitor others, giving them aerial superiority, but now, the CIA was under surveillance, and they were completely unaware of it.

Thus, Green representing the Pentagon’s will to search is out in the open, the drones surveilling from above in secret; with exposure both overt and covert, the CIA had nowhere to hide.

Add in Mu Tianwen’s internal collaboration, Gao Yi couldn’t see any possibility of failure; even if an ambush failed, it was still timely for a pursuit.

"We have made contact with the other side, they deny the target is inside the embassy and deny involvement in the abduction, now we are entering the CIA-controlled area for inspection."

It was just a formality, mutually understood, nothing would be found.

Gao Yi just wondered, would the CIA wait until someone came to check before moving Abdulla?

But before this, there had been no signs of the CIA’s people moving him out, so, the ambush must still be set, in case the CIA actually received the news late, not reacting in time.

Green’s side applied pressure, Peter’s side monitored, he was also responsible for receiving aerial surveillance alerts, making Peter’s role crucial.

"Convoy, someone’s coming out, they’re carrying someone!"

Peter’s voice suddenly rose.

Very urgent, very unexpected, even though everyone thought the CIA wouldn’t wait until the last moment to evactuate; instead, they’d use a more secured method, like hiding the person first since so many places could serve as hiding spots, and the inspecting team from Green’s side couldn’t possibly check every room of the embassy thoroughly.

Hide the person first, then slowly move him out, this was the normal approach.

abantut now, just as Green’s team entered, someone came out.

Most crucially, they were carrying a person.

Gao Yi’s heart tightened instantly, and he immediately spoke into the radio, "Where are they, are they out?"

"In the parking lot! I can’t see them, but the drone sent images, they... there’re fourteen people, they got into four vehicles, no, four appeared, they drove six cars, the person they carried was put onto a bulletproof Humvee, they have four armored vehicles and two sedans!"

The excitement was palpable, was this the feeling of being watched and helpless?

For those on the surveillance side, this feeling was absolutely thrilling.

Waited another two or three minutes, then Peter continued, "Six vehicles formed a convoy, the target is in the third armored vehicle, repeat, the target is in the third armored vehicle, over."

The Humvee was originally a military vehicle, with bulletproof and non-bulletproof versions; almost all military vehicles were armored bulletproof versions that could completely block 7.62mm NATO bullets, but not 12.7mm machine gun fire.

Gao Yi and his crew had 7.62mm M134 Gatling guns; these were somewhat inadequate against Humvees.

But three guns against Humvees were child’s play.

Thus, three guns, four vehicles, it seemed a guaranteed catch, just needed to confirm the convoy’s direction, and they’d crush them.

Peter suddenly continued, "Our communications unit is trying to intercept their transmissions; the vehicle radios’ frequency is transparent to us."

These were military vehicles, especially in Baghdad, meaning they belonged to the military, even though owned by the CIA, they were just borrowed; if the military intended to intercept the vehicle radio transmissions, it was just a matter of whether they wanted to or not.

With the Pentagon involved, it really made things a lot easier.

"We’ve intercepted the target communications."

Peter’s voice also sounded excited; from a mercenary smoothly transformed into an elite action team of the Pentagon, the feeling was just different.

Gao Yi and his team started their vehicles, having monitored the target’s movements, the next step was to get to the correct ambush site, ready to open fire and settle this.

"Point A! Point A! The target is heading to Point A! Over."

"Received!"

Gao Yi replied sharply, then hastily added, "Point A, fast, fast."

Point A was the initial obligatory route for the target, but setting an ambush there was inconvenient due to the clear visibility.

But knowing the target was heading toward Point A was enough, Gao Yi and his team’s vehicles were positioned between Points A and B, conveniently accessible to either point, definitely faster than the target.

However, the location for the ambush was still to be decided.

After passing two junctions, the CIA convoy had many directions to choose from.

Nevertheless, Gao Yi and his team could still execute the ambush.

"Target convoy dispersed, two vehicles towards A3, four vehicles towards A4, target vehicle at A4, repeat, target vehicle at A4."

A1 returned, A2 turned left, A3 went right, A4 continued forward.

Using codes to indicate the target’s direction was the most convenient.

"Received, A4, over."

Gao Yi urgently called, "A4, A4, fast, fast."

Knowing the route to take, knowing which junction the target would approach next, and Gao Yi’s ambush spot was at this second junction.

Driving there required just about four minutes of preparation, while the target convoy’s journey was much longer, just enough time to deploy the anti-aircraft guns.

The three vehicles emitted a roaring sound, passing the junction before the target arrived, stopping at the other side of the crossroads.

The wheel assemblies folded in, the jacks lowered, and the anti-aircraft guns shifted from marching to battle configuration, then operated by one person.

It was not very convenient for Gao Yi’s team to deploy here, since Feng Biao had a leg injury, and Gao Yi was unfamiliar with this task, so they simply decided to shoot directly while towing the gun, allowing for the possibility of pursuing and firing on the move if the situation required.

On the other side, two vehicles set down their guns, and both Li Jie and Lin Xianghua were quick at their work, setting up two separate guns directly on the road.

If the CIA were alert, the ambush would fail.

But the convoy still advanced.

Peter’s voice became much more urgent, he whispered, "Target convoy has passed, intervals very close, prepare for engagement."

The positioning of the anti-aircraft guns wasn’t ideal, only when the target convoy entered the crossroads could they be attacked; the disadvantage was the very close engagement distance, the advantage—

The maximum was less than a hundred meters, difficult to miss, even harder not to penetrate.

According to plan, the operation proceeded.

Don’t talk about whether the plan was perfect, anyway, the advantage of having no specific plan was not fearing sudden changes.

Gao Yi alighted from the driver’s seat, pulled open the rear door, entered the rear gun turret, opened the hatch, unlocked the machine gun locking mechanism, grabbed the gun and turned it, aiming it at the junction.

A Gatling gun doesn’t have a trigger but an electrical control button—pressing it started the six barrels spinning, spraying bullets at a rate of six per minute, ten thousand rounds of ammunition not even lasting two minutes.

Of course, the theoretical firing rate and actual combat rate were different, but holding this machine gun felt solidly reassuring.

"The target is still in the third vehicle, repeat, the target is in the third vehicle, over!"

After waiting a few minutes, as the headlights came into view, Gao Yi tensed slightly.

Soon, the first vehicle whizzed past.

There was only a thirty to forty meters interval between the four vehicles, after the first vehicle passed, Gao Yi didn’t fire.

The target convoy noticed the ambush on both sides, but by then, it was too late, opting not to stop as that would be more dangerous, they made the correct response, accelerating.

But even acceleration was too late.

Gao Yi roared.

"Fire!"

Three armored Humvees, one sedan, simultaneous firing posed no problem.

Three cannons fired at once, three machine guns followed suit, no doubt, a must-hit.

Gao Yi targeted the unarmored sedan, watching a red line of fire sweep out, hitting the speeding chassis, even if it didn’t hit the first time there was no issue, the vehicle couldn’t outpace the bullets.

The vehicle’s body was instantly riddled like a beehive.

This feeling, so thrilling, so exhilarating.

Truly, deeply exhilarating.
