Chapter 299 - 283 Arrival 1
Chapter 299: Chapter 283 Arrival 1
Lin You frowned as she was stopped by a person in police uniform and forced to blend into the somewhat dense crowd at the side to look towards the airport exit.
However, there were quite a few passengers coming out. It was difficult to tell whether Lin Fei had come out yet.
Just at that moment, the personnel responsible for stopping people began to quickly disperse.
Not far away, the middle-aged man in the white suit led his group away without hesitation or delay.
The reception area at the airport suddenly cleared up, making a large space. The crowd that had prepared to watch the spectacle began to liven up.
"Didn’t catch up to anyone?" Lin You speculated.
"Maybe." Feil responded.
As the group in white suits left, the reception area at the airport immediately returned to the normal state it had been in at the beginning.
Car after car slowly departed, and the airport exit cleared up to create a large open space.
"They’re gone," Lin You craned her neck to watch the departing convoy at the doorway.
"What does it have to do with you?" Feil said exasperatedly. "Hurry up and find your older brother."
"Oh." Lin You withdrew her gaze.
**************
Lin Fei put down his phone and nodded across the crowd towards someone not too far away.
There, a woman in white with a cold expression also nodded back slightly.
"Let’s go," Xu Ruoruo immediately turned around to leave.
The others beside her were a bit surprised.
"Big sis, we haven’t even seen the person yet?" the girl chewing gum said in confusion.
"No need."
Although the others didn’t understand, no one protested, seeing as Xu Ruoruo’s standing in their hearts was extremely high. No one disputed this fact in their numerous missions.
Lin Fei watched Xu Ruoruo walk away until she disappeared into the crowd, then continued moving forward.
This sort of pointless show of force was utterly useless, and Lu Jun and others had only come to make a gesture, a stance. He understood this but understanding was one thing; acceptance was another thing altogether.
Having not seen each other for many days, it seemed Ruoruo had started to form a small group centered around herself. After sensing her True Force for a while, it looked like she was doing well, having stabilized at the Peak of Level D.
After straightening out his clothes, Lin Fei saw Lin You painstakingly searching for him in the crowd, with the little girl holding a kitten looking eagerly amidst the throng. Even though he knew she was a Psychic and physically stronger than anyone around, the stark contrast still brought a slight smile to Lin Fei’s face.
"Xiao You, over here," he raised his voice a bit.
Lin You immediately looked over, her eyes lighting up.
"Why did you only come out now?" she complained as she squeezed through.
The two of them moved out of the crowd to meet up.
"I was the last to come off the plane, so I was a bit late. What about mom and dad?" Lin Fei asked as they walked.
"They’re at the new company, negotiating business. There have been a lot of orders and contracts recently, not just recently, but always. But it’s better now than a while ago, mom has even started taking classes. Now it’s just dad busy at the company, and mom only helps out occasionally," Lin You briefly explained. "Mom asked me to come pick you up this time, I even had things to do..." She pouted slightly, showing how reluctant she was to come and fetch Lin Fei. It was all her parents’ orders.
"This is for you." Like magic, Lin Fei pulled a pretty black box out of his jacket pocket and tossed it to Lin You.
The latter hurriedly caught it. A LV logo in white on the box stood out vividly. Inside was a black silk hairband. Ever since Lin You accepted money from Lin Fei’s card last time, her usual tough talk had softened considerably. She seemed to lack the confidence of someone who was beholden to no one.
"Is this... a hairband?" Lin You looked at Lin Fei dazedly, her eyes filled with suspicion. "Why are you suddenly giving me a present?"
"It’s nothing, just something I brought for you along the way. Consider it a gift for making you wait this time," Lin Fei said with a smile. He had already brought gifts back for his family.
"Is... is it?" Lin You glanced at the box in her hand, "Well, if that’s the case, then I’ll just barely forgive you. Let’s call it my compensation for coming to pick you up." She put on a natural expression, slipping the little box into her backpack, but as she did, the corners of her mouth unconsciously revealed a hint of getting the better end of the deal.
"Xiao You, you...." Feil started to say something but didn’t finish. Finally, he sighed heavily and stopped talking.
"What’s up? Why did you call out to me all of a sudden," Lin You mentally transmitted.
"It’s nothing...." Feil glanced at Lin Fei and, seeing the all-knowing look in his eyes, sighed again. "Just as I thought... These two siblings, they really aren’t in the same league...."
On one side, Lin You walked ahead, cheerful and delighted, while Lin Fei followed closely behind with a smile. The two of them, with their cat, left the airport.
It was already late afternoon.
Outside the airport, vehicles for picking up passengers were densely parked in a large area. There were all kinds of cars. Lin You had come by taxi this time. He paid the taxi driver a bit extra to wait for him.
Lin You walked ahead, heading straight for the taxi parked by the curb. "Originally, I wanted Little Ling to come pick you up, but I haven’t been able to get in touch with her recently. I don’t know what happened—seems like she went on a business trip. So, I could only ask for a taxi."
"It’s fine. As long as I can get back home." Lin Fei spoke indifferently.
"Oh, right, mom took special leave at home to cook for you. She said she wants to give you a good meal. The food in the school dining hall is definitely nothing special." Lin You opened the car door and got in. "I’ll sit in the back. You take the shotgun seat."
Lin Fei sat down with no particular concern.
The taxi driver was an older woman with lightly dyed chestnut-brown hair. Wrinkles creased her forehead and the corners of her eyes, clearly showing a lack of good maintenance.
"Back to the original place?" the female driver asked.
"Yes, Ping City’s No. 1 Middle School." Lin Fei nodded.
The car started moving slowly.
The airport gradually receded behind them. The woman drove carefully and cautiously, keeping her speed low. Piles of private cars continued to overtake the taxi, yet she maintained her composure like a mountain.
At the same time, she started chatting with Lin You and Lin Fei about family matters.
As the city center drew nearer, the woman talked about her own life, mentioning she had a son and a daughter both in middle school, currently in the second year. Lin You freely shared a bit about Lin Fei and himself as well.
Lin Fei, sitting beside them, didn’t talk, just listened with a smile. His main purpose this time was to understand Lin You’s current situation. No matter what Ding Ning had told him, it could not be as clear as seeing things for himself. Regarding the past, Lin Fei had a vague feeling that the incident wasn’t caused just by a few Energy Scepters. It seemed there was something deeper involved. He came back this time partly to deal with this issue and partly to begin consolidating the forces under Lu Jun’s command. Taking advantage of the current chaos, he planned to expand the Swordsmanship Club’s influence as much as possible. Expansion, expansion, and more expansion! That was the fundamental purpose of Lin Fei’s return.
Expanding unrestrainedly under the identity of Yan Fei was his goal for this trip. Only a handful of people in Hua Nation knew that Yan Fei was Lin Fei, apart from Lu Jun and others, Sis knew. Zhang Minghui seemed to have guessed it, as did Coastal City’s Xu Chang. Gao Ge, who had disappeared, and South Korea’s An Caiyuan were in on the secret.
These people all knew Lin Fei was Yan Fei, that the two were one and the same.
"But, even if they know, what of it? If they were to divulge it, who would believe them?" Lin Fei thought to himself with equanimity.
With the ability of the Divine Artifact’s avatar, he could maintain Lin Fei’s daily life while Yan Fei directly engaged in actions, all without any interference. As for the high-level ability of the Dream Eater known as creating avatars, how many truly knew about it? Lin Fei could easily shake off any suspicions about himself.
As time passed, the taxi was nearing its destination.
After some time chatting, Lin You had already become quite friendly with the driver.
Stepping out of the car, the two of them and their cat stood in front of the No. 1 Middle School gate.
Looking at the familiar school gate, Lin Fei felt a sense of nostalgia, as if he had been away for a very long time.
"Why are you standing at the gate, lost in thought? Let’s go in," Lin You said, puzzled.
"It’s nothing, I might be just a little tired," Lin Fei spoke softly.
Entering the school, the security guard at the gate was playing Chinese chess with some middle-aged family members of the school’s staff. The round chess pieces clacked loudly as they struck the wooden board. A crowd gathered around the chess game, and nobody noticed Lin You and Lin Fei.
Inside the school, the two of them walked along the main road toward the staff residential area. On the way, familiar faces occasionally passed by and greeted them. This was where both of them had lived and grown up. Nearly everyone in the school’s staff residential area knew each other well, and their relationships were naturally cordial.
Along the sides of the road, junior high students from No. 1 Middle School occasionally emerged from the teaching buildings, chatting in groups. Some of the girls reminded Lin Fei of Jiang Nan involuntarily.
"By the way, You’er, how is Nannan doing? I haven’t seen her in a long time, and she doesn’t contact me either."
"Jiang Nan?" Lin You pursed his lips, "Who knows where she’s off to, these days she’s more and more like those little punks you find in society. Always disappearing without a trace. Except for eating and sleeping, basically unfindable."
Lin Fei frowned slightly. "What about school? How about her classes?"
"School? Classes?" Lin You said helplessly, "That’s been unknown for a long time."
Lin Fei hadn’t expected such a big change in Jiang Nan. In just a few months, having been away for only that long, it seemed like Jiang Nan had turned into a completely different person.
"What about the work at the Swordsmanship Club?" He continued asking.
"Not sure, but she should still be going there, I guess," Lin You said hesitantly.
Lin Fei’s expression darkened slightly. He took out his phone and dialed the Swordsmanship Club’s number, asking a few quick questions. Thankfully, Jiang Nan was still working at the Swordsmanship Club. He felt somewhat relieved. As long as she was still there, Jiang Nan probably hadn’t reached the severe state she had in his previous life. In that life, due to drastic family changes, Jiang Nan ended up becoming a delinquent and, he heard, almost got violated. This time, Lin Fei had thought that by getting her to join the Swordsmanship Club, someone would look after her, and that torrid past would not repeat itself. But to his dismay, she still ended up on that path.
