Chapter 155: Chapter 149: Showdown Part 2
Lin Fei walked out slowly with a smile, expression unflustered.
"This young girl can’t even handle this small setup," he said, shaking his head helplessly.
Suddenly, a smack—the sound of a hand hitting Lin Fei’s shoulder.
A careless voice came from behind.
"Wow, buddy, pretty bold in broad daylight! How much for the chick? She’s top-notch."
Lin Fei immediately threw an elbow backward.
With a thud, the person behind cried out in pain, staggering back three steps and bumping into someone else, his face turning pale, gasping for air for a long while.
"That’s my own sister, watch your mouth. We were discussing business," Lin Fei said coldly, patting his right elbow, then turned and walked toward his sleeping berth.
The man’s face remained pale, and he struggled to stand up and hurriedly left, parting the crowd.
Although the others around heard Lin Fei’s words, most of them were half-doubtful, still wearing ambiguous expressions.
However, Lin Fei just smiled at the people around, showing a helpless look.
"Sorry for the spectacle, folks. My sister..." he pointed to his head, "has some issues here. Please be kind with your words; she’s very sensitive."
The crowd around them laughed.
"Now that I look closely, you do resemble each other," a middle-aged woman commented with a laugh. This was the effect of Lin Fei gradually adjusting his features using his power, employing power to simulate changing his appearance subtly was the easiest way for others to get used to it. Indeed, upon closer inspection, Lin You and he had some similarity because their features were roughly the same. However, due to the same features, Lin You’s arrangement was perfect, whereas Lin Fei’s arrangement was far from it, which caused a significant difference in their appearances. As Lin Fei slowly shifted to his actual face, they would slightly look more alike.
"Indeed, somewhat similar."
"I thought so. Young people of today are open-minded, but not to that extent."
"It’s just your minds running wild. Though I remember last year, on the train from Zhongbei to Lin’an, I really did see such a thing happening."
"Really? That actually happened?"
"It’s true, at that time....."
The surrounding passengers started discussing vigorously, perhaps realizing that the Lin siblings were not as unusual as they had imagined, and soon the topic shifted to something of interest to them.
Lin Fei no longer paid attention to others, following the corridor back to his sleeping berth. Originally, Lin You, Chris, Jiang Nan, Shuang’er, and he made up five people, but Shuang’er insisted on sleeping with him, and Lin Fei couldn’t refuse her, so he swapped her ticket for a standing ticket. They had four sleeping berths in total.
This time, Lin You also got a lower berth. When Lin Fei returned, there was a huge bulge under Lin You’s quilt. Clearly, Lin You was too embarrassed to show her face and had hidden inside the quilt.
Glancing around slightly, the mysterious black cat was sitting beside, delicately lapping up milk from a plate.
"It’s all over; this is such an embarrassing mess!!" Lin You communicated with Feil through mental transmission.
"Who told you to be so impulsive. Typical silly girl, acting without thinking," Feil said bluntly. "Did you say it? Weren’t you supposed to tell your brother the truth?"
"Ah!!!!!" Lin You grabbed her long hair, a morose expression on her face. "No... I forgot to say it..." Unwittingly, she had accepted the nickname ’silly girl.’
"Well... there’s no helping you..." Feil said helplessly. "Shall I tell him?"
"Yes, yes, yes." Lin You rapidly nodded like a pecking chicken. She touched her cheeks, still burning hot.
"I’ll find an opportunity, but you have to be there," Feil explained, "If you’re not there, he might not believe me."
"Okay," Lin You agreed promptly.
Though they spoke of finding a moment, it was actually quite tricky—they couldn’t just turn into a human on a train. Feil and Lin You also considered mentally transmitting directly to Lin Fei, but realistically, mental transmission to non-Contractors required high skill and strength, and the target must be a Psychic. Moreover, Feil’s current power recovery was linked to Lin You, who was just at level F, and even with boosts, Lin You was not strong enough to unseal Feil’s powers. Thus, mental transmission was also out of the question.
"But Chris can do it, can’t she?"
"She’s a Contractor, different!" the black cat retorted with irritation.
"So what do we do now? Can you just talk?" Lin You asked.
"Cats’ throats are constructed differently from humans’. How am I supposed to talk?" Feil said irritably. "Without a contract, I must transform into a humanoid form to speak human language even if it’s just with you."
"But when you first met me, we hadn’t formed a contract yet, right? You still communicated with me telepathically, didn’t you?" Lin You said, puzzled.
"Is that comparable? Back then, it was only because of my previous contractor’s strength that I had the ability to communicate telepathically," Feil said speechlessly. "Now your strength is too weak, so I am bound by the contract again."
"If you have the strength, wouldn’t it be better not to sign a contract?" Lin You pressed.
"Without signing a contract, I would die," Feil’s mood suddenly dropped. "I’d be assimilated by the Energy Scepter."
Lin You also fell silent. From Feil’s few words, she could sense how much pain and tribulation, sorrow and separation Feil had experienced.
At a loss, the pair could only wait to discuss their next steps once they returned.
The train journey back seemed slightly faster than on the way there; having boarded at noon, they arrived at Ping City’s train station by the early hours of the next day.
Five of them stepped out of the station. Chris politely bid Lin You and Feil farewell. Alone, he left, while Lin You and Feil secretly contacted Babanoya, the fusionist with the Energy Scepter in Chris’s possession, and arranged for them to seek out Xilan Saersi for help in finding a place to stay. Chris was injured and likely had to remain in the city for a while.
Of the remaining few, one of Lin Fei’s previously arranged contacts came to pick up the reluctant Shuang’er. Following that, Lin Fei and Jiang Nan returned home with Lin You.
It had only been two days since their trip to Coastal City.
Although Lin You’s external injuries had healed, his vitality was severely depleted, and the journey had left him visibly drained.
In the following days, Lin Fei started a rigorous revision period. She only visited the company once a week, whereas Jiang Nan went daily. Lin You and Feil still hadn’t found the right opportunity to talk with Lin Fei. Or perhaps, they were considering something.
More than two months passed. Life continued as usual. Self-studying and revising had become the main rhythm of Lin Fei’s daily life.
***********
"Brother, answer the phone~~~~ Brother, answer the phone~~~~" a childish, delicate voice of a little girl suddenly rang out.
Within the study room, Lin Fei smiled apologetically and quickly pulled out her mobile phone from her pocket, pressing the mute button.
The surrounding classmates who were still studying merely frowned slightly but didn’t say anything.
The study room was lit by bright fluorescent lamps, and the teacher who was supervising the evening self-study had left the classroom. However, as it was a key high school and the senior class, the atmosphere naturally maintained its own tension and pressure, even without a teacher’s presence.
As the college entrance examination approached, everyone in the class had developed a profound sense of crisis. Thus, under no supervision, they took it upon themselves to study and revise because unlike ordinary classes at regular schools, these students were much more mature. Each understood that the college entrance exam was a pivotal moment in their fate and left no room for error.
Lin Fei placed her pen down, wedging it in between the pages of a book to prevent it from turning over. She then took her phone and stepped out of the study room. Typically, elite classes had more freedom than ordinary ones, so stepping out to take a phone call during evening self-study wasn’t a big deal, almost akin to college.
The ringtone was a recording of Shuang’er’s voice. Lin Fei frowned slightly and glanced at the caller ID before answering the call.
"Lin You? What are you doing calling at this time? I’m studying."
"Not... actually... nothing... important," Lin You stammered, a behavior that had become frequent lately. He would suddenly call and then the courage he mustered seemed to instantly vanish.
"You seem to have something on your mind lately; how about we have a proper talk when I get back?"
"Okay," Lin You immediately agreed.
Lin Fei could partially guess what Lin You meant. He knew that Lin You wanted to open up about his psychic abilities. Initially, he thought Lin You would soon come straight out with it, but as it dragged on and remained hesitant, he decided to bring it up directly.
Outside the classroom, it was very quiet and devoid of people, with light leaking out of the classrooms, occasional coughs clearing someone’s throat were the only sounds.
After hanging up, Lin Fei returned to his own desk in the classroom. After several rearrangements of seating, he was now sitting at the position farthest from the window.
On the desk lay a physics textbook, which Lin Fei was currently revising. Honestly, because he had to divide his attention for self-study, the revision process was inevitably slowed, despite his brain being enhanced by new True Force, enabling him to progress faster than ordinary students. Physics was the last subject left to review. After finishing all theory revision, it was time to start the intensive problem-solving phase.
Seated at his desk, Lin Fei resumed his previous revision. To get into a good university, merely this level of effort was far from sufficient. Due to his extended leave of absence earlier, his relationship with other classmates had grown even more distant. Although his good friend Chen Yun was still quite friendly, others like Fang Jing, with whom he previously had a decent relationship, had become very distant.
The class had barely started when the bell signaled the end of the period, and the classroom instantly shifted from silence to a buzz of noise. Amid the commotion, a figure suddenly approached Lin Fei’s desk.
"According to the assigned groups, you and I are in the same study support group, starting tonight, please spare more time in the evenings." (To be continued.
