Chapter 153: Chapter 152: Show of force _1
Thinking of the past, Yan Ling’s mood grew heavy.
Just then, her gaze fell upon the corner alleyway. Upon seeing the silhouette of an elderly person trudging along under an umbrella, her heart clenched fiercely.
That figure was identical to her maternal grandmother’s from her memory.
"Stop the car!"
Qi Yunyang, who was sitting in the passenger seat, quickly told the driver to stop upon hearing Yan Ling’s demand.
The silver Koenigsegg Agera came to a stop at the roadside. Qi Yunyang turned to Yan Ling and asked, "Sister-in-law, what’s wrong? Are you uncomfortable in the back? If so, why don’t you move up to the front and sit in the passenger seat?"
Qi Yunyang had originally intended for Yan Ling to sit in the passenger seat.
But recalling how his elder brother was the jealous type, he decided it would be safer for Yan Ling to sit in the back alone in order to save his own skin.
If his sister-in-law were uncomfortable and needed to sit in the front seat, his brother, who doted on his wife, wouldn’t object, would he?
"No, it’s fine. I don’t need to move. I just thought I saw a familiar figure. I thought it was someone I used to know," Yan Ling said.
Watching the silhouette with the umbrella disappear behind the veil of rain, Yan Ling let out a self-deprecating laugh.
She was overthinking things!
How could her grandmother possibly be here, in the rain, in the place where they used to live ten years ago?
If she was really that nostalgic, she wouldn’t have missed her mother’s funeral!
Yan Ling let her gaze fall away and said to Qi Yunyang, "Let’s go. The rain is getting heavier!"
The car resumed its journey, and Qi Yunyang noticed that Yan Ling seemed to be in a bad mood.
He wanted to know whether this figure that had affected Yan Ling so much was male or female.
In that small alleyway now, however, he could only see endless rain, nothing more.
Qi Yunyang had no idea that Yan Ling had lived in the Capital for ten years.
He found it strange, wondering how she could know someone from the Capital?
The drive from the airport to the Medical Research Institute took over an hour. By the time the car stopped in the institute’s courtyard, it was already dark.
"Sister-in-law, were you still unable to reach them?" Qi Yunyang asked under the dark sky.
The silent Medical Research Institute under the night sky looked like a lonely island. Qi Yunyang had assumed that someone would have been waiting to receive Yan Ling upon their arrival at the institute. But they had waited for quite a while without seeing a soul.
"It’s alright, I can go in by myself! You’ve been a great help today. I’ll treat you to a meal when we get the chance," Yan Ling said, seeming unperturbed by the lack of a welcome party.
She stepped out of the car, took her luggage from the trunk, and prepared to head inside.
Qi Yunyang might have been nonchalant and frivolous, but he was still Second Young Master Qi—the man who had seen it all.
Looking at the situation at the Medical Research Institute, he could guess that someone was giving Yan Ling a hard time.
But to bully his sister-in-law in front of him? Dream on!
"Sister-in-law, the ground is slippery from the rain. Let me carry your luggage!" he said, quickly taking the suitcase from her hands and striding toward the Medical Research Institute Building.
Unlike the deserted courtyard, the sixth-floor laboratory of the Medical Research Institute was brightly lit and bustling with people.
"How is it? Dr. Li, is she still calling you?" someone asked.
"She just called again a moment ago, but the call was cut off after a few seconds," another voice responded.
"With all the rain we’ve had in the Capital today, she’s a girl arriving in an unfamiliar place. What if something happens to her?"
"Ning Mengmeng, pack up your pity. If not for her, would our cancer treatment program research have been forced to stop? She bit off more than she could chew, and if anything happens, she deserves it!"
While the speaker sounded confident, there was doubt in their expression.
Dr. Li, who was supposed to be receiving Yan Ling, hesitated before finally speaking, "Perhaps we should go fetch her? It’s quite late, and if something really did happen..."
Before he could finish his sentence, a pleasant voice came from the doorstep, "That won’t be necessary, I’m already here!"
