Chapter 145: Chapter 145: Snagged a Rich Man
"To be honest, if I had known earlier who my uncle was introducing, would I have needed to beg my mentor’s wife like that?"
"What?"
Le Tong was shocked by what Zhong Hao said, a shock that was no less than when she first saw him walk in just now.
It turns out it wasn’t the mentor’s wife meddling but Zhong Hao himself clinging to her?
"What do you mean! The professor wanted to set you up with Yang Sheng, right?"
Zhong Hao seemed to think one thunderbolt wasn’t enough for Le Tong, so he casually threw another.
Le Tong simply put down her cup, thinking that if she were frightened by Zhong Hao a few more times, she’d probably spill all her tea.
"Director Zhong, you really dare to say anything. The professor wasn’t trying to set me up with the senior; he was just bored and wanted to amuse himself with us."
Le Tong clearly knew the truth of the matter but didn’t want to leave any room for gossip.
"Well, the professor is a bit of a matchmaker."
Zhong Hao, looking quite knowledgeable, took Le Tong’s tea and personally poured her a cup of juice.
"Have you been staying up a lot lately?"
Le Tong glanced at him, "Who says so?"
Zhong Hao pointed at her forehead, "It does."
Le Tong touched her forehead, which was usually smooth, now had a few tiny bumps. It seemed pimples were sprouting.
Her skin was fair and delicate, so even the smallest pimples were easily noticeable.
"It’s not from staying up late; it’s a woman’s secret." Le Tong stubbornly refused to admit that she had indeed been working overtime to rush the plans.
Zhong Hao shrugged noncommittally, "Honestly, your Mr. Ji is the most demanding and driven boss I’ve ever seen."
Le Tong deeply sympathized with Zhong Hao and the others for their grueling days spent in Ji Rui’s office.
"Not really, at least after you all finished those days, you weren’t missing any limbs; how can that count as demanding?"
"We’re just tough and resilient, not that he’s any less harsh!" Zhong Hao took a sip of tea.
And Uncle Zhong had disappeared into silence ever since Zhong Hao came in, sitting quietly on the side sipping tea as if the young ones’ banter and exchange were unseen and unheard.
"Alright, tomorrow I’ll report to the president and see if we can make a ’Tough and Resilient’ banner to give you all!"
Le Tong said with such seriousness that one could hardly doubt she was teasing him.
Zhong Hao spat out his juice in surprise, "Tongtong, can you actually say something like that?"
Zhong Hao seemed incredulous, that the seemingly gentle and lovely junior could come up with such words.
"What kind of words? Blunt and straightforward words?" Le Tong added carelessly.
"In the past few days at Ji Family, I thought you were just someone with the same name as someone I knew. Now it seems it was my illusion. You two are indeed the same person."
"What do you mean by that?" Le Tong was a bit puzzled.
"You don’t know how obedient and well-behaved you are in front of Mr. Ji."
Le Tong rolled her eyes at Zhong Hao. So, in his eyes, was she just a harmless, soft little rabbit at Ji Family? It seemed in front of President Ji, she was indeed as subdued as one could be.
There’s an old saying, ’A person who eats from others has a soft mouth and takes with short hands.’ Taking such a high salary, doesn’t it make sense to endure and play along?
"I’m his secretary. If I’m not obedient, should I be riding on his head for power and privilege?"
Le Tong shuddered at the thought, imagining that if any woman dared to ride on President Ji’s head in such a manner, she’d probably meet a terrible end.
Zhong Hao was so amused by Le Tong that he laughed heartily. Throughout the meal, the two almost continuously bantered and ate amidst this atmosphere, while Uncle Zhong barely interjected, choosing to silently sip tea and eat by the side, acting wholly unaware of the lively chatter between the young ones.
By the end of the meal, the two had naturally become much more familiar, and Le Tong’s address to Zhong Hao finally shifted from Director Zhong to just Zhong Hao.
Early the next morning, Le Tong returned to the office and didn’t make coffee as she usually did, since Ji Rui had a personal appointment in the morning and wouldn’t return until the afternoon.
As for what the personal appointment was about, it wasn’t her place to ask, and she wasn’t interested in knowing anyway.
Le Tong buried herself in work for an unknown amount of time until she heard footsteps, prompting her to look up. Walking in was none other than Ji Rui.
"President, good morning!"
Le Tong checked the time; it wasn’t even ten yet. Wasn’t he supposed to return in the afternoon? Why was he back so early?
Ji Rui glanced at her, nodded, and swept past her like the wind.
"President, would you like some coffee?" Le Tong dutifully asked towards the tall figure.
"No need!"
Ji Rui left behind two cold words and slammed the door shut.
Le Tong shrugged her shoulders, realizing it seemed President Ji was not in a good mood. It would be wise for her to avoid provoking him.
However, being his secretary, even if she had the sense to avoid him, she couldn’t completely prevent the possibility of provoking him.
Shortly after Ji Rui went in, the phone on her desk rang.
"Come in!"
Ji Rui’s voice was perhaps colder than the howling wind outside.
Le Tong didn’t know what madness this President Ji was up to. Anyway, judging by his tone, he seemed extremely unhappy.
"President..."
Le Tong hadn’t finished her sentence when Ji Rui raised his hand and "slapped" a file in front of her, interrupting her words.
"What is this plan? Are you a pig-headed fool? Are you about to become the Luo Family’s daughter-in-law, so you casually copied a meaningless plan to fool me?"
Le Tong was a bit bewildered but didn’t rush to defend herself. Instead, she glanced through the document, gaining clarity. She wanted to explain, but seeing her look down, Ji Rui assumed she felt guilty and continued.
"If you want to resign, just be straightforward. Don’t use such despicable tactics!"
Ji Rui stared at Le Tong, and though the features on his face resembled Ji Baby closely, they looked far from endearing on him. Those cold, hard lines made Le Tong feel nothing but harsh and unfeeling.
"President, I didn’t plagiarize!"
Le Tong deliberately ignored Ji Rui’s mention of her becoming the Luo Family’s daughter-in-law, pretending that was something he said in the spur of dissatisfaction with her work.
"Then how do you explain the plan in your hand?"
Ji Rui didn’t deny that this plan was much better than the original. But even if it was outstanding, it was based on modifications of the original plan and couldn’t entirely be credited to her. What he wanted was her original plan, not a patchwork on someone else’s!
Initially, he genuinely believed Yang Sheng’s words. After observing her for some time, he genuinely thought she had potential. Unexpectedly, after landing a rich guy, she became this lazy and unambitious!
