Chapter 913: 129 The first time being slapped in the face
Dawang’s Silver hadn’t lasted a few days before Da Qiangzi managed to blow it all, but these few days were busy for Dawang, who hadn’t had the time to check on him. This started to make Da Qiangzi suspicious—had his foolish son suddenly become wise to his scheming?
After much thought, Da Qiangzi decided he wasn’t ready to give up so easily and went to Jin Ji Vinegar Workshop the next day.
Although he knew where the back door of the workshop was, Da Qiangzi, now dressed brightly, insisted on entering through the front door and finding the very apprentice who had driven him out last time.
The apprentice, aware that the man was Dawang’s father, warmed up a great deal upon this meeting, inviting him to sit in the main hall while he went to fetch Dawang from the back.
Da Qiangzi sat in the main hall with his legs crossed, watching the apprentices take vinegar orders and collect money from the customers. He envied them and lamented how wonderful it was to have a big shop with lots of people and even more money.
Just then, during the workshop’s busiest time, an older woman accompanied by a small child came to buy vinegar. Two copper coins for a catty of vinegar. The woman haggled with the apprentice, hoping to get away with paying just one copper coin.
The apprentice, clearly helpless, said with a smile, "Granny, the vinegar we offered you was already at the lowest possible price; we are not making any profit from you. If we take one Wen less, our shop will be at a loss."
The old woman clutched a copper coin tightly in her hand. Even though she knew it was inappropriate, she still insisted on paying one less if possible: "My boy, I’ve bought vinegar from your store more than once or twice; we are old acquaintances now. Please make it cheaper for me."
"Granny, it’s precisely because you are a regular that I calculated it at the lowest price for you. For others, this catty of vinegar would cost three Wen Money," he explained.
The apprentice spoke the truth; the vinegar the woman wanted to buy was indeed the cheapest grade available at their shop. They would make it as affordable as possible, but this woman was not satisfied and wanted a further discount. If they were to comply, they’d indeed be selling at a loss. Being a mere apprentice there to work, if he sold goods at a loss and the Shopkeeper found out, he would be the one to suffer.
The woman, still holding her child’s hand, kept bargaining while the apprentice patiently explained to her. His face still wore a smile, without a hint of impatience or disdain.
However, Da Qiangzi, who was watching coldly from the side, couldn’t bear it any longer. In his past dealings as a businessman, he also encountered customers who were fond of small benefits. No matter how troublesome the customer was, none could escape his grasp when it was his turn to deal with them!
"Hey hey, you old granny, why are you being so unreasonable! They’ve already told you it’s the cheapest price. You’re still not content and want it cheaper! Have you no shame?"
Da Qiangzi’s sudden interjection shocked both the woman and the apprentice; coupled with his harsh words, the woman’s face flushed with embarrassment, and she bit her lip, looking down in silence.
The apprentice frowned disapprovingly at Da Qiangzi. Although the woman’s behavior was indeed questionable, there was no need for him to curse her out like that! If it wasn’t for knowing that Da Qiangzi was Dawang’s father, he might have already retorted.
Yet, inside, the apprentice wondered how someone as amiable and honest as Dawang could have such a rude and arrogant father. Seeing that contemptuous look on his face, it made him want to punch him twice!
"Uncle, this is an internal matter of our vinegar workshop. Please don’t interfere. Dawang will be out soon, so you might as well sit there and wait for him," he said diplomatically.
But Da Qiangzi, without a hint of self-awareness, immediately turned on him: "Oh, my word, boy, why do you speak like that? After all I’ve said in your defense, just wait. With that kind of attitude, everyone will walk all over you."
Seeing that Da Qiangzi and the apprentice were about to start a fight over her, the woman quickly returned the vinegar bottle to the apprentice, saying continuously, "Child, I won’t buy the vinegar. Please take it back, and don’t argue over me anymore."
The apprentice, without taking the bottle from her hand and swallowing his indignation, said with a smile, "Granny, it’s okay, I won’t argue with the uncle. You mentioned wanting it cheaper, right? I really can’t make that decision myself, but let me ask the Shopkeeper what he says."
Before the apprentice had even left, Da Qiangzi snorted with laughter: "Such a trivial matter and you need to ask the Shopkeeper? I don’t think you’ll be working in the vinegar workshop much longer! What a fool! Letting such penniless people in. In my opinion, such poor people shouldn’t be allowed to enter and buy vinegar at all. Just throw them out, and that’ll solve everything!"
