Chapter 863: 117 Persecution, Danger_3
The woman smeared her grimy hands across her face, making her already tear-streaked face even messier, "Wuu wuu, my Silver, that’s the money that was supposed to save my son’s life! Wuu wuu!"
Crying, the woman suddenly remembered something, looked around, and upon seeing her pickled vegetable jar knocked over and the pickles scattered all over the ground, she wailed even harder. She crawled to the jar and started shoving the pickles back in with her hands, all the while sobbing and muttering, "Selling vegetables, selling vegetables, after selling the vegetables my son can be saved!"
Already feeling annoyed, Liu Limin’s heart ached when she saw the woman like this. What she hated most in life were irresponsible men. Seeing the woman in front of her being beaten and scolded by her own husband, even threatened to be sold into a brothel, Liu Limin couldn’t stand by and watch any longer.
"Hmph, it’s lucky you ran fast. If I had caught you, I would have given you a good thrashing!"
After cursing the man, Liu Limin hurried to the woman’s side, snatched her hands away, and stopped her from picking up any more soil-covered pickles, saying with discomfort yet firmness, "Stop picking them up, I’ll buy these vegetables! Here, is this Silver Tael enough for your son’s medical treatment?"
As she spoke, Liu Limin stuffed all her Silver Taels from her purse into the woman’s hand, "You need to get medicine for your son quickly! And make sure your husband doesn’t snatch the money away again!"
The woman gawked at the Silver Taels that suddenly appeared in her hand as if a pie had fallen from the sky, her eyes wide. She dumbfoundedly raised her head and stuttered, "I, you, you...?"
Liu Limin’s heart softened at the woman’s gaze. She helped her up from the ground and considerately dusted the dirt off her body, "How do you feel? Can you still walk? Where’s your son? Go and get him treated quickly!"
Finally coming back to her senses, the woman burst into intense tears, bent her legs as if to kneel to her, "Miss, you’re like a Bodhisattva come to life, Miss, I can’t thank you enough for your great kindness. Even in death, I could not repay the kindness you’ve shown me!"
"Big sister, please don’t do this, get up!" Liu Limin supported her arms, gently comforting her, perhaps even she herself had not realized that she could be this tender.
"Big sister, where’s your son? You should hurry to get him treated," Liu Limin pressed.
The woman repeatedly nodded, "Yes, yes, I’m going home to pick up my son for treatment right now, going home, going home. Ouch!"
"Big sister, what’s wrong? Can’t you walk?"
Supporting her leg with one hand, the woman shifted uncomfortably and realized her leg was throbbing with pain, even cold sweat was breaking out. "I... might have been kicked by that damned man earlier, my leg... it hurts terribly."
Liu Limin kneeled down to rub her leg; when she reached just above the knee, the woman cried out, clearly having been kicked rather severely.
"Big sister, is your home far? If not, let me take you back," Liu Limin offered.
The woman was startled, then clasped her hands together gratefully, her eyes reddened again, "Young lady, you really are a good person! Such a good person!"
Liu Limin smiled, helped the woman by her arm; after all, she didn’t know the way back home herself, so she might as well lend a hand to this woman and then ask for directions at the pharmacy later.
The woman’s home was not far but somewhat secluded. As they walked, they moved away from the busy streets.
Liu Limin grew concerned, her eyebrows knitting together.
Perhaps sensing her worry, the woman suddenly laughed, "Young lady, thank you so much. That husband of mine, he’s hardly ever home, the gambling den has pretty much become his home. Alas, it’s just my son and me against the world, living such a hard life!"
Liu Limin nodded slightly, feeling a bit more at ease in her heart. Since that man wasn’t at home, just a woman and a child, there shouldn’t be any danger, right?
As she thought this, the woman pointed towards a small alley ahead and smiled, "Young lady, we’re here, it’s just inside this alley."
Liu Limin glanced at it, the alley narrow, feeling fortunate that it was only mid-afternoon. If it had been any darker, she might have worried she was in a desolate wilderness.
Shivering involuntarily, Liu Limin bit her lip and said, "Now that we’re at your home, I should head back."
"Ah, young lady, we’re right at the doorstep and you’re just going to leave? After helping me so much, I have nothing with which to thank you, but the least I could do is invite you in for a glass of water," the woman insisted with sincere eyes and enthusiastic retention. Liu Limin, unable to find an excuse to refuse, reluctantly agreed.
