Chapter 948: Chapter 948 Like the Yang Family

After three more days, by the afternoon, the Yang family had finally arrived in the capital, and Zhulan was waiting at the entrance of the residence, with her sons and daughters-in-law behind her. As the carriage drew closer, Zhulan descended the steps.

Eight carriages came to a halt, four of which were laden with gifts and luggage.

Yang Zhumu was the first to alight from the carriage, agile on his feet, taking a moment before he excitedly stepped forward, "It’s been years since our last meeting, sister. You haven’t changed a bit, whereas I have aged a great deal. Look at all these white hairs on your brother’s head."

Zhulan, noticing her older brother had clearly aged, felt her eyes redden slightly, "I’ve aged as well, it’s impossible for me not to have changed."

Yang Zhumu laughed joyfully, his sister’s apparent youthfulness meant that her life must have been good, "In my eyes, you haven’t changed much at all."

Yang Zhulin, accompanied by his two grandsons, joined them, "You’ve put on quite a bit of weight, but that’s good, it shows prosperity."

Zhulan wiped her eyes with a handkerchief, becoming more emotional with age, tears threatening to fall, "Elder brother, second brother, you’ve both had a long journey. Let’s go inside and talk."

Although Yang Zhumu’s face showed signs of aging, he was in excellent physical shape, a foundation built through martial training; his gait was brisk and lively. After walking a few steps, he saw his sister lagging behind and stopped, "I’m used to taking big strides, I forgot to slow down."

Zhulan hurried to catch up, "I can’t keep pace with you, elder brother. Please walk slower."

Yang Zhumu shortened his steps, looking around the courtyard, "This house is truly worthy of being a royal gift; your residence is really large."

They had been walking for a while and still hadn’t reached the main courtyard.

Zhulan couldn’t help but smile, "Wu Chun also has a residence bestowed upon him, and it’s not small either."

Yang Zhumu stood up straight, that’s right, his son had a residence too, but the thought of his younger son took the joy from the moment, "There’s someone to look after my home. This time, your second brother and I are planning to stay until winter. Upon entering the capital, I’ve already sent the steward back to prepare."

Upon hearing this, Zhulan paused in her step, "I’ve already prepared a courtyard for you at home."

Yang Zhumu turned around, "We’ll stay for a few days."

Only then did Zhulan cheer up, "Then you must stay for several more days."

Yang Zhumu felt both joy and a twinge of sorrow upon hearing this. The Yang family had few close relatives; after their parents passed, only the three siblings remained close. Over the years, the Yang family couldn’t offer much help to Zhou’s family; instead, it was his brother-in-law who had gradually been rising up the ranks and taking care of the Yang’s.

In the letters from his sister, there were always good news. He was well aware of the difficulties faced by his sister and brother-in-law, so despite several invitations from Zhulan, the Yang family did not want to impose. They had come this year in fulfillment of last year’s promise, and only because Zhulan’s family had already established themselves in the capital.

When they reached the main courtyard, Zhulan had her two brothers sitting by her side as Zhou Lao Da, Chang Zhi, and a few others came forward to offer their greetings.

After the greetings, Zhulan said to her eldest brother, "Elder brother, you only sent word of your arrival in the capital today. Shu Ren is at the Ministry of Revenue, Chang Lian is at the Hanlin Academy without leave, and Mingyun and the others are at the Academy. You and second brother will have to wait until evening to see them."

Yang Zhumu felt proud at his sister’s words, the Ministry of Revenue, the Hanlin Academy—listen to those places, "Your second brother and I feared that asking Shu Ren to take a leave would disrupt him. Shu Ren and Chang Lian are busy, but since we can see everyone at night, we decided not to send word a day early."

The maids brought forward tea and fruits, and Zhulan said, "Elder brother, second brother, please have some tea and fruit."

Yang Zhumu looked at the fruits; his family had an orchard, and he enjoyed eating fruits, but he had never seen these before, "Where are these fruits from? They look quite peculiar but pretty."

Zhulan replied, "They are from overseas and quite sweet. Elder brother, second brother, please try them."

Yang Zhulin had already started eating, "Indeed, they are sweet."

Zhulan looked at Yang Wen and the others, counting the generations—she was their great-aunt, "These children have grown so much taller in just a few years. Yang Wen is already a big lad, almost as tall as Wu Chun now."

Zhulan paused and then continued, "Second Brother, Yang Qing really looks like Wu Shan. I feel like I’m seeing Wu Shan at eleven or twelve years old. That must be Yang Yu from the Wu He family. When he left Lizhou Province, the little fellow was still quite small. Counting the years, he should be seven this year, and he’s grown so tall."

Yang Zhulin, the second eldest Yang, smiled, "The men of the Yang family are all tall."

Yang Zhumu, the eldest Yang, put down the fruit in his hand, "What are you still standing there for? Hurry over and greet your aunt-grandmother."

Yang Wen, as the eldest, led his two younger brothers forward, "Greetings, aunt-grandmother."

Zhulan’s mindset had aged long ago, completely taking on the mentality of an elder. Hearing the address, she smiled contentedly, "Good, good."

Chang Zhong stepped forward, "What about me?"

Being a cousin and an elder, Yang Wen, despite being older than his cousin Mingyun, was taller, satisfying his pride as an uncle.

Yang Wen and the others were somewhat taken aback. Zhulan laughed and beckoned her son over, saying to her big brother and second brother, "This is my youngest son. It’s your first time meeting him."

Yang Zhumu and his brother laughed, "This child has the bravery of our Yang family members."

Yang Zhulin said, "He has such a fearless and adorable face."

Zhou, the eldest, thought to himself that it was a good thing father wasn’t at home. In father’s eyes, the youngest resembled father the most.

Yang Wen felt a bit awkward to call out ’cousin-uncle’ as he was nearly fourteen, tall for his age, and calling a small child was difficult for him, but a single pat on the back from his grandfather, and he immediately spoke up, "Cousin-uncle."

Seeing their eldest brother calling out, the Yang Qing brothers quickly followed suit, not wanting to get hit.

Chang Zhong was pleased and reached out with his plump hand to pull his cousins aside, "Come on, I’ll show you around. Right, mother mentioned the Yang family practices martial arts. How are your skills? Shen Xing is at home today. Why don’t you have a match?"

Zhulan didn’t stop them, watching as her son left with Yang Wen and Ming Hui. Even Yushuang and the others followed. She smiled and said, "The child has always been tough."

Yang Zhumu liked tough kids, "Chang Zhong is definitely going to achieve great things."

Such a small child and not at all scared of strangers, indeed bold as her sister mentioned in her letter.

Zhulan didn’t know what her big brother was thinking but said, if they knew, "Don’t look at my little one; he’s not that big, but he’s someone who has met the Emperor twice and even had a conversation."

Zhulan gestured for her daughters-in-law to go back, only keeping the eldest and Chang Zhi with her. She had intended to let her big brother and second brother rest, but the two brothers were in good health and not tired. So, Zhulan began inquiring about the affairs in Lizhou Province.

Zhulan noticed the look in Madam Zhao’s eyes as she left and asked, "Is Qian Keqi doing well in Lizhou Province?"

Yang Zhumu remembered the instructions Chang Yi had given before he left, "The Yang family has always taken care of him. Though young, he’s adept in social relations. Chang Yi arranged things before he left, and the kid is generous. With the connections of his brother-in-law in Lizhou Province, Qian Keqi is doing quite well. His academic achievements at the Academy are also impressive."

Yang Zhulin took up the conversation, "This time he came, he even asked us to bring gifts here, saying it’s an early Mid-Autumn Festival present."

Upon hearing this, Zhulan praised, "The child is doing well."

Yang Zhumu replied, "That’s thanks to the arrangements your family made. The child has been unaffected because he has stayed at the Academy."

Yang Zhumu had never thought highly of Qian Keqi’s mother.

Zhulan changed the subject, asking, "How are my sister-in-law and second sister-in-law?"
