Chapter 477: Chapter 477 Lethality_1

Zhulan said, "You must be laughing at me, sister. I’ve just arrived in Jinzhou Province not long ago, and I’m not familiar with the official matchmakers. I will need to ask for your help."

Madam Xue was experienced with official matchmakers, having arranged both of her sons’ marriages herself, "Alright, I’ll help you look."

Zhulan breathed a sigh of relief, "Thank you."

Getting Chang Zhi married was much more troublesome and complicated than Chang Lian, and Zhulan didn’t stay long; she still had to prepare the list of betrothal gifts.

No sooner had Zhulan returned home than Liu Ya came hurrying up to her, "The Ran Residence has invited Miss to enjoy the flower viewing today, and the Min Residence has also invited the fourth young master."

Zhulan, "Did they all go?"

Liu Ya said, "They did."

Zhulan asked, "Did the Min Residence only invite the fourth young master?"

Liu Ya looked down, "Yes."

Zhulan felt somewhat anxious. She had just managed to find a good matchmaker, and she really hoped nothing would go wrong. She pressed her brow, hoping only for Chang Zhi’s natural obliviousness.

Xue Han came back very quickly, and Zhulan was startled, "Why did you come back so soon?"

Xue Han chuckled, "Mother, your daughter was brought back by the Magistrate."

Zhulan furrowed her brows, "What happened?"

Since the Ran Residence wouldn’t scheme against Xue Han, she felt reassured about Xue Han. Unexpectedly, it was on Xue Han’s end where an incident occurred.

Xue Han said nonchalantly, "Someone tried to use me to make the Zhou family discontent with the Ran Residence. Coincidentally, the Magistrate was also there. Before Liu Jin could shield me, the Magistrate had flung her teacup and splashed Ms. Bai with the hot tea she had spilled on me, and then she pulled me away."

After speaking, Xue Han’s eyes brimmed with mirth. She had attended many banquets in Jinzhou, seen all sorts of schemes and always had to be careful. This time, she felt truly relieved to see someone standing up for her for the first time!

Xue Han continued, "Mother, you don’t know, but once we left the Ran Residence, the Magistrate’s face was all red with not a bit of her usual bravado and arrogance!"

Zhulan laughed, "She must have come to her senses. You and she have no connection yet, and her rush to defend you exposed her own thoughts."

Xue Han grinned like a little fox, "So just before getting on the carriage, I whispered in the Magistrate’s ear that she must be the bold girl in Fourth Brother’s heart."

Zhulan, "....."

She could imagine the Magistrate must have been struck like by a bolt of lightning. Touching Xue Han’s forehead, she thought her daughter was quite the little fox too!

Recalling the Magistrate’s petrified expression, Xue Han couldn’t help but laugh again. She liked this sister-in-law not only because her mother did, but also for shielding her from Ms. Bai’s fury— it was truly warming!

Zhulan’s heart lightened considerably, but only until Chang Zhi returned drenched from head to toe, which soured her mood, "Go back to your room to wash up and change clothes first."

Chang Zhi’s face looked awful, rather crestfallen even, "Mother, I was pushed into the water."

Zhulan’s heart raced, "There weren’t any girls in the water, were there?"

Chang Zhi was perplexed, "Mother, what are you talking about?"

After listening to Chang Zhi’s explanation, Zhulan’s heart settled back down. As long as there were no girls involved in the water incident, that was good. Seeing Chang Zhi’s indignant expression, Zhulan burst out laughing.

Chang Zhi looked sullen, not understanding why his mother would laugh, looking down at his soggy self, clearly looking disheveled, "Mother."

Zhulan coughed, "Alright, alright, mother won’t laugh anymore. You and Qi Mo go and wash up and change your clothes."

Chang Zhi pursed his lips. He had been holding it in all the way back and was indeed uncomfortable, "Mm."

Xue Han was worried for her fourth brother. Seeing him throw such a fuss upon arriving, she wanted to follow, but seeing her mother about to cry from laughter, she stopped in her tracks, "Mother, aren’t you worried about Fourth Brother?"

Zhulan wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes, "Worried? Rather, I’m worried for the Min Residence. Out of all the people they could scheme against, they targeted your Fourth Brother. Chang Zhi won’t consider anything for others."

Xue Han figured out the key point and couldn’t help but laugh as well. By now, everyone must know Fourth Brother burst out of the Min Residence drenched from head to toe. Regardless of the reason, his rage meant the Min Residence was to blame.

Zhulan had laughed enough. Now it was time to guess how the Min Residence would calculate against the Fourth Master Zhou. Today’s method was simple and effective, just a pity that it encountered the unorthodox Chang Zhi. The Min Residence probably was dumbfounded, not expecting Chang Zhi to run off in anger.

Chang Zhi quickly returned after changing his clothes; his hair was still damp. Zhulan asked, "Did you have any ginger soup?"

Chang Zhi, with frustration simmering inside, nodded, "I did."

Zhulan commanded Liu Ya, "Tell the steward to invite a doctor."

Chang Zhi, "Mother, I’m fine after drinking the ginger soup."

Zhulan didn’t expect Chang Zhi to understand the intricacies of the situation and explained plainly, "It’s just an opportunity, you should just honestly stay at home for these days!"

Moreover, she couldn’t resist adding fuel to the fire, it would be a shame to waste the Min Residence’s scheme.

Chang Zhi uttered an "Oh," "Mother, I was pushed into the water, and the poetry anthology I brought with me was also ruined."

His master’s anthology, although not the original, was still very precious to him. He was infuriated.

Zhulan, "...."

So, this boy was not angry because he was plotted against, but because the anthology was ruined!

Chang Zhi pursed his lips, "Mother."

Zhulan rubbed her forehead, "When you fell into the water, did someone invite you to change your clothes?"

Chang Zhi, "Yes, which made it even more annoying. They didn’t compensate me for the anthology but kept holding onto me without letting go."

Angered, he pushed the people away and strode off with Qi Mo. Although the courtyard was large, his strength lay in knowing the way; it was always he who remembered the paths when he traveled with his master.

Zhulan nearly laughed again, the Min Residence must have never thought that Chang Zhi would disregard his image and reputation to dash out. By the time they reacted, it was too late. If they really dared to stop him, he could verbally demolish them when he was angry. Fortunately, they didn’t obstruct him; otherwise, who knows what he could have blurted out!

Thinking this, Zhulan felt quite regretful.

Chang Zhi was visibly upset, and even his sister covered her mouth to chuckle, "Mother."

Could you please stop laughing?

Zhulan, "Alright, alright, I won’t laugh anymore. Don’t be so puffed up. Let me tell you, your father has acquired some good books recently; they are now on the bookshelf in his study. Mother permits you to go take them."

Chang Zhi wasn’t sulking anymore, "Mother is the best, I’m going to the study."

At the doorway, he added, "Mother, this is with your approval. You should tell Father."

Zhulan, "I’ve said it; rest assured and go ahead."

Happy, Chang Zhi left. He had wanted to go to his father’s study ever since he returned but chickened out under his father’s stern look. He could only wistfully think about it. Now that he could go there, falling into the water didn’t seem so bad. As for his master’s anthology, his master still had the original.

Xue Han watched her fourth brother’s eagerness to scamper off, voicing pensively, "What did the Magistrate see in the fourth brother?"

Zhulan smiled. What attracted her to Chang Zhi was his pure heart. An He, having seen too much of the world, understood the darkness and human nature, thus sought purity. Chang Zhi’s purity was rare.

Xue Han didn’t get an answer from her mother but, the image of the Magistrate was elevated in her mind.

News traveled exceptionally fast that Fourth Master Zhou, drenched, had stormed out of the Min Residence. Soon after, the announcement spread that the Zhou Residence had invited a doctor, claiming Fourth Master Zhou had suffered shock and caught cold.

Even the officials in the government office got wind of the news.

Zhou Shuren burst into laughter upon hearing the news. He wasn’t angry; instead, he sympathized with the Min Residence. Their plot hadn’t succeeded, and instead, Chang Zhi had painted them black.

Official Wang silently took a few steps back. He was genuinely afraid of Zhou Shuren’s laughter, "Lord Zhou, please stop laughing."

Zhou Shuren, "But I feel like laughing."

Official Wang, "..."
