Chapter 450: Chapter 450: Gave Birth_1
As time ticked by, Zhulan’s face grew paler and paler.
Lady Li was terrified. She prayed that nothing would happen to her mother-in-law, as she couldn’t bear to think about the scene when her father-in-law would return. Although the room wasn’t very hot, Lady Li’s back was soaked with sweat.
By noon, Zhulan, despite being pregnant and having no appetite, forced down a bowl of porridge.
Lady Li couldn’t eat at all, her thoughts consumed by her mother-in-law.
Zhou Shuren was so worried he couldn’t eat a thing, and he stood still, waiting for any news.
Zhulan couldn’t sit still any longer. Finally, she heard the baby’s cry, though it was very faint. Zhulan stood up, surprised and delighted, "It’s born."
Lady Li collapsed into her chair, "At last, it’s born."
Otherwise, she thought she might die from the stress.
The midwife, Mrs. Song, soon came out, but she wasn’t holding the baby, "Congratulations to the mistress, the second wife has given birth to a daughter."
Zhulan asked, "How are Zhao Shi and the child?"
Mrs. Song hesitated, then said, "The second wife has injured her body, and it will be very difficult for her to have more children in the future. The child was born prematurely and had been in distress for a while, making her very weak and in need of careful nurturing."
If not well cared for, she might perish at any moment.
Zhulan could guess as much, but the fact that the mother and daughter were safe was a great fortune. As for the child, Zhulan looked at Mrs. Song, "Please take care of the child for this month."
She didn’t trust anyone else. Mrs. Song had put forth the greatest effort during Zhao Shi’s childbirth, so entrusting the child to her made Zhulan feel more at ease. The little one had already suffered enough in Zhao Shi’s womb; she hoped the child would grow up safely, rather than perishing before even surviving a month.
Mrs. Song complied, "Yes."
Zhou Shuren snapped back to reality. He was first relieved that Zhao Shi and the child were both safe but, upon hearing that it would be difficult for Zhao Shi to conceive again, he stiffened. Did this mean the second wife had only one son? After a moment of silence, he thought, at least there was a son.
The midwife soon came out. Although Mrs. Song had taken Zhao Shi’s pulse, they still called for a doctor to come and ensure Zhao Shi was fine and needed rest. With that confirmation, Zhulan completely relaxed.
Zhulan went in to see the child, who was not as big as Xue Mei’s twins at birth, with hardly a few hairs on its head. Zhulan looked on, her heart racing in fear that the little one might stop breathing at any moment.
After coming out, Lady Li had sent away the midwife and the doctor. Zhulan said, "Well done."
Lady Li supported her mother-in-law, "Mother, the second sister-in-law is safe now. Let me take you back."
To overcome her fear, Zhulan had been toughing it out, and indeed she was tired, "Alright."
As they left the second wife’s courtyard, Lady Li said, "Mother, you are truly kind."
She knew that out of all the daughters-in-law, her mother-in-law liked the second sister-in-law the least. Even though she might not be her mother-in-law’s favorite, as soon as she knew that the second sister-in-law was about to give birth prematurely, her mother-in-law promptly bought ginseng and even personally oversaw the situation.
Out of all the daughters-in-law, they weren’t born into the family and could be replaced through remarriage with someone of a higher status. But the mother-in-law hadn’t thought of replacing them. Even though she and Zhao Shi were of the lowest status, her mother-in-law hadn’t thought of exchanging them. With such a mother-in-law, if she didn’t treat her as her own mother, she would feel guilty.
Zhulan patted Lady Li, "I’ve frightened you today."
Lady Li nearly cried several times. She knew Zhou Shuren must have been very harsh with the eldest couple.
Lady Li, "I wasn’t scared."
Zhulan gave a wry smile and didn’t expose Lady Li’s lie. Standing before her, Zhulan adjusted Lady Li’s cloak, "Don’t catch a cold."
Lady Li grinned, "Mhm."
The Zhou family welcomed a new member, but because the child was too weak, Chang Lian and Xue Han among others didn’t see the baby.
Zhao Shi woke up in the evening. Fearing that Zhao Shi’s emotions might be greatly unsettled by the knowledge of her injury, Zhulan ordered that no one was to inform Zhao Shi until she had finished her confinement.
The Zhou family’s addition was supposed to be a happy event, but the child’s poor health meant that even the washing ceremony couldn’t be conducted properly. It was known that the condition of Zhou family’s new granddaughter was not good.
Zhulan inquired about the baby’s condition every day. The little girl was extremely fragile, struggling even to nurse before she needed to take medicine, which made Zhulan very anxious.
Zhulan tried not to worry Zhou Shuren, who was already busy enough with government office work. He constantly worried about her, and she noticed his hair loss was getting worse.
Half a month later, the child grew noticeably stronger, easing the gloom in Zhulan’s heart and bringing more smiles to her face.
Zhou Shuren saw all this and thought to himself, the unborn child really loved Zhulan. The little one didn’t cause any trouble, and when Zhulan was worried, he remained calm and obedient. A son was indeed precious, cherishing his mother.
The Zhou residence didn’t hold a grand celebration for the baby’s full-month ceremony as Zhulan advised. The little one was somewhat better, but still much frailer than a normal baby, and it was best to be cautious.
Zhao Shi also learned about her injury and the difficulty of conceiving again. She was silent for a long time, and if not for Zhulan’s careful monitoring, Zhao Shi could not even eat.
Two days later, Zhao Shi came to her senses. Zhulan had Mrs. Song keep a close watch on her, as she didn’t want Zhao Shi to take out her frustration on the little one.
In the blink of an eye, the Zhou family had been in Jinzhou Province for almost two months. Zhou Shuren’s affairs at the government office had settled down, and he was no longer busy. In recent days, he had been in a good mood, but today he seemed a little upset.
Zhulan thought to herself that after nearly two months of wit and struggle, Zhou Shuren had subdued several people. By now, nobody should dare to trip him up, "What’s wrong?"
