Chapter 415: Chapter 415 Concern_1

The following day, before dawn, Zhou Shuren was up; he hadn’t slept all night as anxiety consumed him. Before falling asleep, he thought of a possibility. Once Zhulan was sleeping soundly, he just sat up and watched her, even though he couldn’t see anything clearly in the dark night.

He wanted to touch Zhulan’s belly several times, but with every attempt, his courage failed him, and he withdrew his hand. He endured the entire night; his eye sockets were dark, his eyes bloodshot, even his stubble seemed to have grown longer.

Zhou Shuren carefully dressed himself and called for the steward to summon the doctor. He had to know the exact news, or else he wouldn’t feel up to going to the government office.

Alright, even if he received the news, he doubted he would feel up to going to the government office.

When Zhulan woke up, the doctor had just arrived. Zhulan changed her clothes and said to Zhou Shuren, "You’re too nervous. Look at me, I’m quite alright, aren’t I? I don’t feel unwell anywhere."

Zhou Shuren’s gaze was fixed on Zhulan’s belly; his palm clenched and then relaxed. It took a while before he reached out to take Zhulan’s hand, "The doctor is waiting outside. Let him have a look."

Zhou Shuren didn’t give Zhulan a chance to object; he directly pulled her outside. Zhulan hadn’t even washed her face yet. He really couldn’t wait for a moment, but seeing Zhou Shuren’s dark eye sockets, Zhulan felt a pang of heartache. Zhou Shuren must not have slept the whole night.

Doctor Zhang was skilled in medicine. For the past two years, it had always been Doctor Zhang whom Zhulan’s family had called upon. Taking her pulse, he was surprised, and then he carefully took it again. After confirming the diagnosis, he had to think about how to offer congratulations. He had seen many pregnant women in their forties; only a few were optimistic. Then, thinking of the conditions in Zhou’s household, he carefully took her pulse again, feeling confident. With thorough care, she should be fine, "Congratulations, my lord; your wife is with child, about a month and a half along."

Zhulan was stunned. Since the arrival of autumn, there wasn’t much left of the year, and she had truly given up hope. She had slowly come to terms with it, thinking it was not meant to be, comforting herself that a life without regrets was not complete. And now, she was being told she was pregnant?

Zhou Shuren was mentally prepared, but his mind still went blank. He was going to be a father. Could Zhulan’s body withstand it? "Doctor, how is my wife’s health? She hasn’t been getting enough sleep these days."

Doctor Zhang had seen various reactions from pregnant women. "These past two years, your wife has been taking good care of her health. Her condition is fine. Excessive sleepiness is one kind of pregnancy reaction. Some pregnant women experience vomiting, some develop a larger appetite. There are many kinds of pregnancy reactions, my lord, you needn’t worry too much."

Zhou Shuren heaved a sigh of relief. He had been afraid that something might be wrong with Zhulan’s health, he had even contemplated abortion. But then he worried that an abortion might harm her. He had been incredibly restless all night, "It’s good that there are no problems, very good."

Doctor Zhang looked at Zhou, "I’ll write down all the dietary restrictions for the expectant mother in a while, my lord, do not worry."

Zhou Shuren, finally seeing that Zhulan and the baby were both fine, at last showed a smile, "I’m going to be a father."

Doctor Zhang gave Zhou an odd look. He knew Zhou already had six children. Why was Zhou saying he was going to be a father? He should have said he was going to be a father again. Then, thinking it over, he concluded that Zhou must be overwhelmed with joy. This was to be a child born in his later years.

Zhulan snapped back to reality. She was really pregnant. She was going to be a mother? This child would be hers and Zhou Shuren’s, which made it different in significance.

Zhulan, with a silly smile clutching Zhou Shuren’s hand, "I’m going to be a mother."

Zhou Shuren, "Yes, I’m going to be a father."

Liu Ya looked up at the sky wordlessly. She really hadn’t felt that the lord cared much for the several masters in the house. Unexpectedly, for this unborn little master, the old master was showing such fondness, completely lacking his usual stern and shrewd demeanor, even more excited than when he became a father for the first time!

Zhou Shuren regained his composure, coughed, and signaled Liu Ya to take the doctor down to write up the precautions.

Zhulan hurriedly stopped Doctor Zhang, "My health is good, but what about the child? Do I need to take any fetus-protecting medicine or anything?"

Her age weighed on her. If this were a modern body, she wouldn’t worry so much, but it wasn’t, and even though she had been conscientiously taking care of herself for nearly four years, she remained concerned.

Doctor Zhang understood Lady Li’s nervousness at her age, "At the moment, your ladyship’s condition doesn’t require it; the child is doing well. I will come to take your pulse every month, no, every half-month."

The look in Zhou’s eyes was a bit intimidating, but luckily he corrected himself quickly.

Zhulan trusted Doctor Zhang’s medical skills. Lady Li had been under his care, and her own mother’s health had been looked after by Doctor Zhang, "Thank you for your trouble, Doctor Zhang."

Doctor Zhang, "Not at all, not at all."

In the past couple of years, Zhou’s estate had only sought his services, bringing many patients to his clinic. It was all due to the trust from Zhou’s household that he had made a name for himself in Prefecture City.

Zhou Shuren was so delighted that he not only generously rewarded Doctor Zhang but also, for the first time, extravagantly gave two months’ salary to the servants.

There you go, without even having breakfast, everyone in the various courtyards knew of Zhulan’s pregnancy.

In the main courtyard, with all others gone, Zhulan held Zhou Shuren, "I’m going to be a mother, hehe, going to be a mother."

Zhou Shuren watched Zhulan’s joyful demeanor, grateful that providence had lent a hand. Otherwise, with regret lingering in Zhulan’s heart, as she truly aged, the regret might grow deeper, perhaps ultimately burdening her heart!
