Chapter 307: Chapter 307 Parental Grace_1
Lu Lao Yezi stroked his beard and took a glance, "For twins, these two kids are not small at all, and they have the strength to move their limbs; they look quite good, let me feel."
Lu Lao Yezi touched each of them, "These two little fellows have strong bodies, just need a good nurturing and there won’t be any problems."
Zhulan felt relieved, the child in her arms was so tiny, she was really afraid the baby’s health would be not strong, "With your words, Elder, I am reassured."
Lu Lao Yezi was chuckling, "You can rest easy now."
The condition of the woman who had just given birth was settled, and Xue Mei couldn’t move now, so she had to do her postpartum recovery there. After the room was cleaned and Xue Mei was covered with a quilt, Zhulan invited Lu Lao Yezi inside to feel her pulse.
Lu Lao Yezi stroked his beard, "Although the birth went smoothly, the woman had been weak in body for the past two years, and she hadn’t recovered well. Having twins this time has further strained her body; it’s best to take at least five or six years before trying to have another child, otherwise it may damage her foundation."
Zhulan said, "We will definitely take good care of her."
Lu Lao Yezi thought to himself that the Zhou couple not only cherished their own lives but also treasured the lives of their children. They were good parents, "I’ll go out and write a prescription. It’s not suitable to take medicine during confinement. Afterward, I’ll prescribe some tonics for the mother to eat. After the mother eats them, she can breastfeed the children, and that can also help replenish some vitality for the two premature infants."
Zhulan was very thankful, "I appreciate your troubles, Elder."
Zhulan especially believed in the medical skills of the Elder; the health of her and Zhou Shuren was the best proof.
Zhulan followed the Elder out, and then she remembered that she hadn’t given the midwife a red envelope. She hurriedly took out two Silvers from her purse, "You’ve had a lot of trouble today. I didn’t cook the red eggs; please take this Silver Coin."
The midwife didn’t care about the red eggs, only caring for the Silver Coin in front of her, oh my, surely it was a Graduate’s family, giving two Silvers just like that!
Lady Li came out of the kitchen, "Mother, I’ve boiled the red eggs. Here are ten red eggs."
Zhulan smiled, she didn’t need to remind Lady Li what needed to be done now; she knew. Very good, "With the red eggs sorted, let me escort you out, Elder."
The midwife chuckled, "No trouble at all, I can get myself out."
Jiang Sheng, having looked after the two children and his wife, said, "Mother, I’ll escort the midwife out."
Zhulan said, "Alright."
Zhou Shuren invited Lu Lao Yezi to the front yard for a chat. Lu Lao Yezi wasn’t in a hurry to leave and was prepared to stay the night. Zhulan was even happier; with the Elder staying, she felt more secure.
Jiang Sheng came back quickly. Zhulan said, "You go take care of Xue Mei first; I’m going to cut out some diapers."
Jiang Sheng responded, "Mother, should I go back home and get them? Xue Mei had everything prepared for the baby."
Zhulan believed more in what she had prepared, "No need, I’ve bought everything. Go inside now."
Jiang Sheng felt embarrassed inside and said gratefully, "Mother, you’ve worked hard today."
Zhulan answered with a smile, "What’s so hard about taking care of one’s own daughter? Now, hurry inside."
Jiang Sheng felt deeply grateful for the kindness of his parents-in-law. If they hadn’t come back today, he would’ve been very confused alone at home. He chuckled inwardly; these two little boys sure knew the time to arrive, both such fortunate sons.
Lady Li approached, "Mother, I’ve stewed chicken soup for elder sister; it will be ready soon."
Zhulan, "You’ve had a hard day. Make sure to boil extra hot water later. Is the food ready?"
Lady Li nodded, "The dishes are all ready; just two pots of steamed buns are left."
Zhulan told Lady Li, "You first go entertain your mother and your aunts in the front yard. I’ll cut out some diapers, and then I’ll join you."
Lady Li said, "Alright."
Zhulan saw the guests to the front yard and then returned to the room with her little girl. Zhulan motioned her daughter to bring back hot water. The kang bed-stove in the room was heated up, and Zhulan cut eight pieces of diapers, scalded them with hot water, and laid them out on the kang mat to dry.
Xue Han saw her mother continue to cut fine cotton cloth, "Mother, don’t we have enough diapers already?"
Zhulan said with her head lowered, "After dinner, when I get back, I will make quilts and small mattresses for your two nephews."
Xue Han thought of her nephews’ clothes that did not fit; the clothes she made for them were a bit too large, "Mother, I will also alter the little clothes tonight."
Zhulan stroked her little daughter’s hair. At the time of the child’s birth, she had worried about not having clothes to wear. She had not expected Xue Han would make clothes for the child; her younger sister was doing well, "Good."
After cutting the cloth, Zhulan poured hot water on it and spread it on the kang bed, knowing it would most likely be dry after dinner.
Lady Li returned, "Mother, we’re waiting for you to start the meal!"
Zhulan rubbed her back, "Let’s go."
Even after arriving at the front courtyard, where torches were lit and lanterns hung, it still appeared quite dark. Zhulan thought about the ancient dinners depicted in TV dramas - how fake they were, all lit by bright lights, whereas dining in ancient times at night was accompanied only by an eerie atmosphere.
Because they didn’t bring back much liquor, they went without drinks for dinner, only eating their meal. The Zhou family was famished from the journey and from cooking, and on top of that, there was Xue Mei’s childbirth – both tired and hungry they were.
The Li family, who were never full to begin with, had long been stomachs rumbling. Aside from the men’s table where a few conversations took place, the only sound in the courtyard was of eating.
Zhulan stood for a long while. Dinner was late and she no longer had the energy to speak.
With many boys in the Li family, no steamed buns or dishes were left over from the meal. Lady Lixu told her daughters-in-law to help Lady Li clean up the dishes. Zhulan, feeling bad, asked Lady Li to take the remaining sauce-coated meat back to her sisters-in-law.
Zhulan and Zhou Shuren saw off Lady Lixu and the others, then returned to the main courtyard to check on Xue Mei. Even though the birth of her two children went smoothly, Xue Mei was still utterly drained. Jiang Sheng had already finished his meal in his room and cleaned up his bowl and chopsticks.
Zhulan asked, "How is Xue Mei doing?"
Jiang Sheng hurriedly stood up, "She just had some chicken soup and went back to sleep."
Zhulan glanced at the two children; the two little ones were sleeping soundly without crying or fussing, "You’ll have to take care of them tonight."
She was utterly exhausted; if it weren’t for the quilts she was still determined to make for the children, her eyelids would have long since been fighting to close.
Jiang Sheng said, "Mother, you should rest early too. You’ve been tired all day."
Zhulan replied, "I’ll sleep once I’ve finished making the children’s quilts. Alright, no need to see me out."
Back in her own room, Zhou Shuren was folding the dried nappies after washing up. Seeing him prepare hot water for her, she rolled up her sleeves and said, "They say you only realize parental grace after having children, yet without having borne any, I’ve somehow incurred six debts. Today really exhausted me to death."
Zhou Shuren felt sorry for Zhulan and was a little displeased with his usually satisfactory eldest daughter, "Could Xue Mei not have picked another day to give birth?"
Zhulan laughed, "This is childbirth, it’s not something you can just reschedule."
Zhou Shuren handed Zhulan a towel, "I just feel sorry for you, look how tired you are."
After washing her face, Zhulan was in no rush to change but sat on the kang bed, needle and thread at hand, "Light a couple more candles for me, I’ll finish making these quilts."
Zhou Shuren frowned, "Tomorrow, let some of the Zhao family women make them for Xue Mei."
Zhulan said, "No fuss, children’s quilts are small, just spread the cotton and sew it up; it’ll be done quickly."
Zhou Shuren knew Zhulan’s temperament and could only grudgingly help spread the cotton, hoping Zhulan would rest sooner.
Zhulan worked quickly with her needlework; she finished making two small quilts and mattresses, then made a couple of changing pads.
Zhou Shuren, carrying the small quilts, said, "I’ll deliver these to Jiang Sheng, and you should change and go to bed!"
Zhulan, who had been sitting until her back ached, could barely keep her eyelids open, "Yes, and please check on Xue Mei and the children for me."
"Understood."
After changing into her nightclothes, Zhulan crawled into bed, only then remembering she had forgotten to ask Jiang Sheng if the children were full term. Her eyelids were too heavy to resist sleep any longer, so she decided to ask tomorrow instead.
