Chapter 161: Chapter 161 Admiration_1
Zhou Shuren felt a pang of heartache and, at the same time, deeply admired Zhulan. She managed to eat at the family’s banquet without letting anyone see her dislike. Zhulan endured the nausea and finished eating, and even chatted with people afterward—something he might not be able to match. He would be sick of the same dishes after just ten days, but men at their table could drink alcohol. The food was just a formality; nobody actually served dishes to them. He reached out and took Zhulan’s hand. "I shouldn’t laugh. It’s all my fault. Do you want to hit me to vent your anger?"
Zhulan withdrew her hands. "Don’t take the opportunity to take advantage of me, and don’t say it’s all for me. Aren’t you doing this for the family too? I can’t be much help with other things, but this little matter is nothing."
She was used to it in modern times, anyway; social interactions never really went as one wished!
Zhou Shuren’s increasingly bold hands instead wrapped around Zhulan’s waist. "But it still hurts me."
Zhulan’s peripheral vision caught Zhou Shuren’s hands. This man really knew how to take an opportunity to flirt with her, but having someone feel bad for her was pleasing. In the modern era, whatever she did was expected. Her parents wouldn’t feel bad for her because she enjoyed the superior conditions her family provided, and thus she was obligated to work hard for the company in return.
In ancient times, she and Zhou Shuren worked hard together, understanding and supporting each other. They took care of each other. Zhulan’s hand wrapped around Zhou Shuren’s waist didn’t pinch and twist the soft flesh this time—let him off just for today!
Zhou Shuren was distracted by the lack of reaction from Zhulan. His hands took advantage and pulled her forcefully into his embrace!
Zhulan rolled her eyes internally but didn’t break free in the end!
The following day, after breakfast and waiting for over an hour, they finally went to see Xue Mei, the eldest daughter. Zhulan took the children from her household to play with her grandchildren and only came out of the bedroom when it was time to eat.
Zhulan noticed eight dishes on the table, which was two more than the day before, and they clearly seemed to have been bought from a restaurant. Moreover, all the dishes were her favorites. "How come there are two more dishes?"
The two new dishes were quite expensive lamb dishes!
Xue Mei glanced at her father, who seemed very pleased with the dishes. Who would have thought that he would come over late at night to order them? Seeing mother’s delighted face, it was clear that he had done it for her. Her father truly cherished her mother to the bone. Her hand unconsciously touched the purse, inside of which was a tael of silver given to her by her father. "Father specially added them late last night, does mother like these two dishes?"
She was initially happy that her father had felt bad for her and gave her silver, but the realization came too quickly; everything he did was for her mother. She should have known all along—in their father’s heart, their mother occupied the entire space. They, the children, were merely at the edges. That one tael of silver wasn’t in vain; looking at her father turning his head towards her with a sound, she understood that he hoped she would speak well of him.
Zhulan would be lying if she said she wasn’t touched. She rarely had the chance to eat lamb, and Zhou Shuren actually knew she liked it. "I do like it, it’s thoughtful."
Xue Mei realized her mother was moved. "Mother, in father’s heart, you come first. He may not say it, but he’s always thinking of you."
Zhulan, "...."
She finally understood. The eldest daughter had accepted Zhou Shuren’s bribe. Plus, her own daughter didn’t understand her stepdad well enough—Zhou Shuren wasn’t one to silently give without expecting recognition. Whatever he did, he would make sure you knew about it. Even if he didn’t say it himself, he had his ways of having others speak for him!
Zhou Shuren frowned. His eldest daughter didn’t know how to speak properly. He wished he could express his affection every day—a tael of silver was too much of a bargain. Had he known, he would have given just two hundred wen!
The dishes on the table satisfied the whole family. The six dishes from the restaurant made it no different from eating out. Zhou eldest and Zhou second were also happy that their brother-in-law and sister paid them such regard. Though they benefited from their mother’s favor, it was clear that their sister and brother-in-law had put in effort too!
On the way back, Zhou Shuren found his grandchildren bothersome. They had been clinging to Zhulan when they arrived, but that wouldn’t do on the trip back. He looked forward to taking the opportunity to express his feelings, and he briskly shooed everyone away.
Zhulan looked up at the sky to see how well Zhou Shuren had trained the family members—a single glance from him, and they left!
Zhou Shuren and Zhulan walked back. Zhou Shuren held back his hand that wanted to hold hers, feeling quite regretful that this was ancient times. "Shall we take a walk around the village?"
Zhulan thought it was a good suggestion. "Alright."
As they walked towards the village entrance along the road, Zhulan immediately spotted a carriage. The curtain was open, and she saw Wang Ru. Wang Ru saw Zhulan too. Zhulan didn’t expect Wang Ru to stop the carriage!
