Chapter 1375: The Awkward Father-in-Law
Chapter 1375: Chapter 1375: The Awkward Father-in-Law
Wang Hua’s expression was somewhat unnatural, "Why does sister-in-law look at me like that?"
Yu Lu smiled lightly, "I am admiring my sister’s beauty. It is only upon a careful look today that I’ve realized my sister is also a rare beauty."
The awkwardness on Wang Hua’s face dissipated, and her smile turned shy, "Does sister-in-law really think so?"
"Mhm."
Wang Hua’s eyes sparkled vibrantly, and she pursed her lips. Her father wasn’t the eldest son; the future of the Wang family belonged to the main branch, and her father’s official rank couldn’t compare to her eldest uncle’s. The future of the Wang family was her uncle’s, with the grandfather entirely devoted to his nurturing, whereas her father held only a nominal position.
If only she were the legitimate granddaughter of the main family, then she would be a suitable match for the fourth son of the Wen family. The Wang family, an establishment of noble families for many years, would then be considered a good match for the Wen family.
Yu Lu was unaware of the turmoil within Wang Hua’s heart, intending to discuss Wang Hua’s thoughts with her mother-in-law later.
The Wang family had few children, and daughters were particularly precious, resulting in the Wang family’s girls not being betrothed early. From the current look of things, it seemed better to betroth them early on. The Wen family was truly not an ideal marriage prospect.
The next day, as the spring exam period came to an end, Chang Yi took a special leave just to pick up his son-in-law. The weather was still cold, and Yushuang wanted to bring the child, so she did not go over.
Liufeng and Wong Wei came out together. Liufeng looked left and right, rubbing his eyes uncertainly. After confirming he wasn’t mistaken, he said to Wong Wei: "My father-in-law has come to pick me up, I should head back first."
Wong Wei was surprised, but upon looking, he recognized that it indeed was his second uncle, "Alright."
Wong Wei didn’t need his father-in-law to pick him up. His own father was out of town, and his grandfather had personally come. He walked briskly over, his voice tinged with excitement, "Grandfather!"
Wong Ju saw that his grandson looked energetic and was relieved, "Let’s go home. I heard from your grandmother that your wife has made you a special soup. You should go back and have a good nourishment."
Wong Wei licked his lips; he was indeed craving it, having eaten too perfunctorily during the exam period, "Alright."
After a moment of thought, Wong Ju added, "Your wife is pregnant, and with the weather being cold these days, your grandmother stopped her from coming out, worried that she might catch a cold and fall ill."
Feeling resigned, Wong Wei responded, "Do you think your grandson would be that petty? I’d be the one to worry if my wife had come."
Wong Ju chuckled merrily, "True to my grandson, always so magnanimous. Let’s go, let’s head home."
Wong Wei rubbed the back of his head; his grandfather’s slap had been quite forceful.
Aboard the Zhou family’s carriage, Chang Yi was very worried as he had not seen his son-in-law. When he finally saw him, he spoke in a stiff tone, "Yushuang was worried about you, not eating or resting well. It seems she worried for nothing; you are brimming with vitality!"
Liufeng had grown accustomed to his father-in-law’s gruff show of concern. He smiled, "This is all thanks to the preparations made by my father-in-law for his son-in-law."
Chang Yi was awkwardly defensive, "That was Yushuang’s doing."
Liufeng did not believe it; his wife had already prepared everything for him last year, and he had checked at least three times. He knew best whether anything had changed just before the exams. Just as he was about to speak, he choked on his breath and coughed a few times.
Chang Yi hurriedly handed him a cup of water, "Take a few sips to settle it."
Then he instructed the coachman, "Take a detour to the medical clinic."
Liufeng wanted to say he had only choked, but seeing his father-in-law’s worry, he swallowed the words back. Being cared for felt genuinely good. Having his father-in-law come to pick him up was the most touching moment for him; as someone without a father, he naturally longed for paternal presence at crucial moments in life, and now he had no regrets.
Chang Yi felt uneasy under his son-in-law’s emotional gaze, "What are you looking at? Drink more water."
Liufeng held his teacup with a smile, "I’ll listen to dad."
Zhou family, Mrs. Zhao said to her mother-in-law: "My husband is fussy about sons-in-law, but when something really matters, he’s more concerned than anyone. I haven’t even been there for Yushuang, yet he has already taken leave in advance."
Zhulan, "Chang Yi is quite fond of Liufeng."
"He would never admit it, always acting superior as a father-in-law, nitpicking now and then, but now he’s eagerly gone to pick him up."
"That’s a matter between father-in-law and son-in-law."
Mrs. Zhao said and couldn’t help but laugh herself.
Mrs. Zhao, looking at her daughters playing in the yard, even though she was certain they wouldn’t be married off in father-arranged marriages, still discussed her intentions, "Mother, if there is a suitable family for Yu Die, it would be good to arrange a betrothal in advance."
Upon hearing this, Zhulan asked, "Has someone approached you with a proposal?"
Mrs. Zhao shook her head, "After the New Year, I met Mr. Chang’s wife, and Mr. Chang has two sons, both legitimate. The elder is already married, and the younger is two years older than Yu Die. I had someone inquire about him, a fine young man."
Zhulan observed Mrs. Zhao’s satisfied expression, "What does Chang Yi think?"
"My husband also thinks it’s a good match, and told me to discuss it with you."
Zhulan touched the bracelet on her wrist, "A good marriage isn’t just about a good child. With so many rumors now, I will inquire about the Chang family, and then you can subtly bring it up."
With more and more Zhezi being sent out in favor of arranged marriages, the rumors grew denser. The Emperor had not replied, and the sincerity of those who wanted to be betrothed to the mentioned young ladies was truly tested.
At Yushuang’s home, she was pulling on her father, "Dad, don’t leave before you eat, I’ve prepared everything."
Chang Yi cleared his throat awkwardly. Overwhelmed with worry, he found that his son-in-law had no issues at all, and his father-in-law’s pride was at risk of faltering, "Your mother is still waiting for me at home. We can eat anytime, you all should get some rest early too."
While speaking, Chang Yi took the opportunity to run away quickly while his son-in-law was changing clothes.
Liufeng purposefully dallied and didn’t come out, embarrassing his father-in-law. Seeing his father-in-law’s ears turn red, he wasn’t surprised to find out that he’d left upon coming out. Cradling his son and kissing him affectionately, "Babe, did you miss Daddy?"
The little guy looked carefully at his father, then sniffed closer, seemingly smelling something, and started calling out with ’oh oh’ noises.
Yushuang gently said, "He recognizes his daddy."
Liufeng felt blissful inside, kissed his son, and said, "Let’s go have some dinner."
At the Wang family, as soon as Wang Wei arrived home, he received care from the entire family. If he hadn’t been too tired, they wouldn’t have been willing to let him go.
It was only after two hours at home, having changed his clothes and now lying on the kang bed, that Wang Wei drank the soup his wife made for him. Enjoying being fed the soup by her felt wonderful, "Finally, I’m brought back to life."
Yu Lu put down the bowl in her hand, "Rest up at home for the next few days."
Wang Wei reached out to touch his wife’s now rounded belly, "You’ve had a hard time these days, has our child been naughty or not?"
Yu Lu pointed to her belly, "Very naughty, ever since it started moving, it kicks every now and then."
She thought she’d be a mother several years later, but she became one soon after getting married. As the child grows day by day in her belly, she truly understands how hard it is to be a mother.
Wang Wei got up and placed his ear on his wife’s belly, his arms instinctively wrapping around her waist, "Aren’t you going to ask how I did on the exam?"
