Chapter 1371: Home
Chapter 1371: Chapter 1371: Home
Yu Lu tilted her head slightly, the smile in her eyes growing richer. She pointed to the tree in front and said, "I was amused that the little tree can bear so much snow."
She wasn’t telling the truth. Could she tell her husband that life was not easy? What if it made him overthink and suspect that she was unhappy in the Wong family?
Wong Wei glanced at his wife, who he was supporting, "It’s cold outside, let’s go back."
"Mhm, did you eat anything at your brother-in-law’s house?"
Wong Wei replied, "Had stewed mutton pot. My brother-in-law was too courteous, insisted I stay for dinner despite my plan to eat back here."
"It’s rare for you to visit."
The imperial examinations were coming after the New Year, and her husband had been working very hard every day. It had been a while since he stepped out of the house.
"You look a bit tired, must be exhausted."
Yu Lu was pleased that her husband could see she was weary—which showed his care for her—"I’ve already rested for a little while."
"I know it’s very busy at the end of each year. If you’re tired, rest more. Don’t wear yourself out."
Yu Lu shook her head, "Paying New Year’s visits is the quickest way to understand relationships. Don’t worry, I know my limits."
"Mhm."
A few days after the Minor New Year, comes the New Year. The Zhou family’s celebrations are extremely lively; fireworks light up the entire capital at night.
Staying up late to welcome the New Year, Zhulan and Zhou Shuren couldn’t keep up and went to rest early. They were also the earliest to rise in the morning.
In the entire mansion, only the servants were busy working while the masters were still fast asleep.
Walking down a pathway, Zhulan and Zhou Shuren saw servants everywhere cleaning up firework debris, "I have no idea how long they were setting off fireworks last night."
Zhou Shuren hummed, "The kids are all grown now, their own little coffers have fattened. Each buying some, added up, it’s quite the amount."
Being at home every day, he is constantly outwitted by his son over money; his stinking boy also brings over his great-granddaughter, the girl at her cutest age. Her calls of ’great-grandpa’ are too sweet, and the result—his wallet empties, certainly contributing to those fireworks.
Zhulan thought the same, and with a laugh said, "You give me New Year’s greetings, and I’ll give you a big red envelope too."
Zhou Shuren chuckled, "It must be bigger than the kids’."
"Your demands are quite low."
Zhou Shuren replied, "Whatever amount I want, your son has his eyes on it. As long as my red envelope is bigger than theirs, it will do."
Zhulan glared, "That’s because you spoil them."
Zhou Shuren sighed, "Year after year, I just can’t bear it even more."
Zhulan fell silent; both of them hoped to see their son married and with children.
After taking a walk around, they returned to the main courtyard. Breakfast was to be had together. After a short rest, the various families gradually arrived.
This year the Zhou family did not welcome any new members, but Chang Yi was back. The children got an extra red envelope, a big one at that, calling out ’Second Uncle,’ ’Second Father’ very sweetly.
Zhulan’s red envelopes remained the same, and with the completion of New Year’s greetings, this year’s New Year was considered passed.
On the second day of the Lunar New Year, married daughters returned to their natal homes. Rongchuan’s wife, Ran Wan, was pregnant and finding it difficult, so she did not visit. Other daughters-in-law without a natal family to return to did not go back either. Xue Mei and Xue Han returned, and along with Yushuang and Yu Lu, it was only on the second day of the Lunar New Year that the true reunion of the Zhou family occurred.
This year, the newlywed daughter-in-law received the most attention and gathered a considerable amount of red envelopes, making a tidy sum for herself.
Zhou Shuren left with his sons, and the grandsons also went out. Only the women remained in the house.
Zhulan couldn’t personally go to the Wong family; that would seem as if she didn’t trust Yu Lu enough. Lady Li often wanted to visit, but she stopped her. Only when Yu Lu returned could Zhulan see her granddaughter, "Has the child been giving you a hard time?"
Yu Lu shook her head, "No more fuss now, very well-behaved."
Yu Lu felt at ease as soon as she got home; nobody was there to constantly nitpick, she could lean back comfortably however she liked when sitting — indeed, her maternal home was more relaxing.
Her first New Year at the Wang family just made her feel exhausted; Chinese New Year’s Eve went smoothly, but from the first day of the New Year, it got noisy, as the second wife and the third wife could always find some fault.
In Yushuang’s arms, the chubby baby who had just woken up clung to his mother and wouldn’t let Zhao’s try to hold him. Yu Die and a few others were gathered around the little baby.
Lady Li was chatting with her sister-in-law, and Su Xuan was chatting with Xue Han; the room was bustling with people.
Zhulan was in a daze. She rarely reminisced about the New Year’s scenes from her modern days, but today she found herself thinking about it again. When her grandparents were alive it was not so bad, but afterwards, she mostly spent it alone because no matter which side of her parents she went to, she always felt like an outsider.
However, in ancient times, she was the absolute center of attention; everyone circled around her. Zhulan watched as Yu Jiao and Yu Die started making noise again, "Both of you be careful, don’t get melon seed shells on your sister-in-law."
Yu Die stuck out her tongue, behaving herself, and pushed the fruit in front of her towards her sister-in-law, "Sister-in-law, have an apple. May you have peace in the days to come."
Ran Wan liked her younger sisters-in-law, especially Yu Die, who had a liveliness she herself lacked, "Good, may everyone be safe and sound."
Lady Li chuckled, "What Die’er says always sounds pleasant."
Zhao’s finally held her grandson; the feeling of favoritism with a grandchild felt so close. Since the little guy had been born, she would visit her daughter’s house whenever possible. She had been busy towards the end of the year and hadn’t seen her grandson for a while, hearing her sister-in-law’s words, "Don’t flatter her too much, sister-in-law, or she’ll become too proud."
Yu Jiao’s eyes moved about, "Then I want to see how high sister Yu Die’s tail can wag."
Yu Yi snatched her sister’s shirt, "It seems you want me to help you check."
Yu Jiao immediately toned it down, "Sister, I didn’t say anything just now, it was fifth sister."
Yu Wen was lost in thought but, upon hearing this, "That is quite the blatant deflection."
Yu Jiao exclaimed, "Fifth sister, you’re not asleep?"
Soon after, everyone laughed; Yu Wen rolled up her sleeves, "Fourth sister, help me catch her."
At the front yard, Zhou Shuren was playing cards with his sons and sons-in-law, looking on without lifting a hand.
Zhou’s eldest son sighed while playing, "I’ve already got a granddaughter, and next year two more grandchildren will be added."
Zhou’s second son was not envious, "I’ve got a grandson too."
Jiang Sheng paused, "I might become a grandfather too?"
The news silenced everyone at the table; Zhou Shuren was also stunned.
Rongchuan was not envious; he would rather his daughter and son grow up slower. He didn’t want to marry off his daughter at all — thinking of all those Mr. Hou, pfft, he was reluctant.
Jiang Sheng, seeing everyone looking at him, felt awkward, "No, it’s just a possibility, a possibility."
Chang Zhi remarked, "I think it’s brother-in-law who’s longing for a grandchild."
Jiang Sheng, "..."
It really wasn’t that; what he was wishing for was his parents’ approval.
In another room, Mingyun and the others were dividing into teams to play games, pairing up in twos. Mingyun smiled, "I’m the eldest, I should pick first. As an official who has been appointed to the court, it wouldn’t be right for me to take advantage of you all, so I’ll choose Ming Jung."
Ming Hui chuckled twice, "Eldest brother is cunning."
Chang Xhong was just there for fun, "Then let’s not play any memory-based games."
Mingyun was still calm, "Alright."
Ming Jung shivered whenever he saw his eldest brother since he got exposed; he ended up in his eldest brother’s clutches. Seeing his other brothers who thought they had the upper hand, he chuckled inwardly — they knew too little about his eldest brother!
