Chapter 1348: Having a Child
Chapter 1348: Chapter 1348: Having a Child
Jiang Zhu got married, and the dowry that the Jiang family provided for Mulan was also known to Zhulan. The Jiang family, through the recent years, had begun to rely on the dowry from Dong Yiyi for their daily expenses. Later, when Jiang Ming earned his stipend, and with the family owning some farmland and reduced expenditures, along with the annual rent, there was no need to dip into the principal even with Mulan studying.
When Mulan got married, Dong Yiyi sold most of the properties initially prepared for her and turned them into Silver Coin, then purchased some land as part of the dowry.
The Dong family added a substantial dowry—considering it was quite a generous amount—consisting of a shop in the capital, dozens of acres of land in Zhou family’s village, along with some jewelry, and other significant accompaniments.
Lady Dong, as the younger maternal aunt, also prepared additional dowry items for Mulan. The textiles and a few antiques in the dowry all came from Lady Dong.
Additionally, the betrothal gifts sent by Xue Mei and her husband were also brought back as part of the dowry, making Mulan’s dowry quite impressive.
Now, the residence of Xue Mei’s family was purchased by Jiang Sheng with his earned Silver, and it was bigger than the previous house. The original house was now listed on Jiang Miu’s dowry ledger.
A few days after Jiang Zhu got married, Dong Yiyi and Jiang Ming started their journey home, as Jiang Ming couldn’t let go of the children at the clan school. The couple, reassured by their daughter’s good life, set off at ease. Mulan, however, stayed behind, as she wanted to experience the atmosphere of the upcoming imperial examinations even though she wasn’t participating this year.
The days were growing colder. Zhulan sat on the small heated brick bed, watching Yu Die and the others chatting. The room was indeed lively.
Mulan sat beside her mother-in-law, laughing and talking with her younger girl cousins. Though she was married, it still felt surreal; she had actually married successfully and become a granddaughter-in-law of the Zhou family.
Thinking about the letters she had received, Mulan remembered how her elder step-sister had plotted against her. After learning about Mulan’s upcoming marriage, her elder step-sister had returned home to apologize and even brought additional dowry items. However, their father, his heart grown cold, had refused to accept the step-sister’s offerings.
Now that she was in the capital, letters from her sister never ceased, and alongside them came goods such as furs.
Xue Mei noticed her daughter-in-law’s distraction, "Are you tired?"
Mulan shook her head, "Mother, I am not tired."
Xue Mei didn’t insist further. This was her first time being a mother-in-law, and she was inexperienced. She didn’t want to impose her own negative experiences onto her daughter-in-law. Traveling through mountains and rivers with her husband had broadened her mind, and she adopted a tolerant attitude toward her daughter-in-law, setting clear boundaries though.
At that moment, Steward Ding entered, his forehead drenched with sweat, obviously having run all the way here, "Miss Yushuang is about to give birth."
Lady Hu was worried about her daughter and had already stayed over for the past few days. Yushuang’s mother-in-law had also returned from the farmstead, and this news had been sent by Lady Hu.
Zhulan, "Prepare the carriage quickly, I need to go and see for myself."
Well, how to put it—although as a grandmother she had become quite composed when it came to childbirth, she was still anxious about her eldest granddaughter’s first delivery and wanted to be there in person.
The room became a bit chaotic. Yu Die also wanted to be by her sister’s side, "Grandma, I want to go too."
Zhulan looked over, and Yu Die wilted. Zhulan said, "None of you are allowed to go."
Xue Mei said with a laugh, "The girls are also worried about Yushuang. Mother, I’ll accompany you."
Zhulan nodded, "Good."
Mulan stood up, "Mother, I will go as well."
Xue Mei shook her head, "The child still doesn’t know when she’ll give birth, you don’t need to go, just head back to the government office later."
Mulan considered that she wouldn’t be of much help anyway, "Alright."
At the Gu family, Lady Hu had already entered to accompany her daughter, while Lady Hu held Buddha Beads and chanted "Amitabha" tentatively. Liufeng was extremely anxious.
With just the two of them at home, he had taken care of his wife’s pregnancy, accompanying the child’s growth. Although not as directly involved as his wife, his heart overflowed with paternal love. Now concerned about his wife and worried for the child, Liufeng felt immensely anxious.
Zhulan’s arrival surprised both Lady Hu and Liufeng. Lady Hu quickly came forward to support her, "Old Madam, why have you come?"
Zhulan didn’t hear any noises from inside and looked anxiously at the delivery room, "I am worried about Yushuang."
Lady Zhao came out when she heard noises outside, "Mother, why did you come?"
She now regretted not waiting until the child was born to send news, causing her mother to come in person.
Zhulan asked, "How are Yushuang and the child?"
Lady Zhao said, "Both the adult and the child are very well."
When her daughter was about to give birth, she had the doctor check her pulse every day; with her company, her daughter felt secure, and now, gathering her strength for the delivery.
When she left the government office, Yushuang had not yet given birth. Chang Yi arrived first, sitting outside waiting.
Liufeng felt the sharp gaze of his father-in-law, especially when his wife was in pain and crying; the presence of her father made him less anxious.
Zhou Shuren was there to pick up his daughter-in-law, and incidentally, just as Zhou Shuren stepped into the courtyard, the child was born, crying loudly. Zhou Shuren said with a smile, "This child is strong."
Chang Yi grinned, "Indeed, listen to that loud cry."
Liufeng was so anxious he was nearly plastered to the door; lacking a father himself, he wanted to give all his love to the child, eagerly anticipating the child’s arrival. Now that the child was born, he wanted to be the first to see him.
Regrettably, Liufeng was pulled away by his own mother. As the door opened, his mother picked up the child and walked away. Liufeng shifted his gaze to inquire of the midwife,
"Is my wife alright?"
The midwife smiled, "Mother and son are safe, all is well."
Liufeng muttered to himself, "Safe, all safe."
Zhulan took the child passed to her by Lady Hu, feeling touched again inside. Lady Hu was very good with people. If it weren’t for her overly gentle nature, Lady Hu would also be a significant figure. "This child looks like Yushuang around the eyes, the rest resembles Liufeng; he will be a handsome young man when he grows up."
Lady Hu was content with a grandson, "This child is solid."
Zhulan looked at the child and could not help but cry again; this child had a strong temperament.
The child made rounds but never reached Liufeng’s arms. Chang Yi held onto his grandson and wouldn’t let go. Liufeng could only look on desperately, each time he tried to get closer, his father-in-law gave him a look, and he dared not move!
When Zhulan and Zhou Shuren were ready to return to their residence, Chang Yi finally let go of the child reluctantly. If it weren’t for the fact that his in-law was a widow and he had to show restraint, he really wouldn’t want to part with the child; he finally understood the deep bond of affection with the next generation.
Liufeng held his child and saw his father-in-law off, but unfortunately, the small child began longing for his mother and started crying loudly.
Chang Yi, hearing the cry, "The child must be reluctant to part with me."
Zhou Shuren looked at his son without expression, "As long as you’re happy."
Chang Yi, "..."
Dad, that comment makes me unhappy.
With Yushuang’s child born, time seemed to accelerate with the baby changing every day, and in the blink of an eye, the child’s one-month celebration arrived. They had to hold a banquet for this occasion, and fortunately, it was just the beginning of winter, not too cold yet.
After Yushuang’s confinement period, she slimmed down. Yu Lu asked curiously, "How did you do it?"
Yushuang pointed to her eyes, expressing difficulty, "The child truly is a sweet burden. This boy has such a strong temper; he cries when he’s hungry and cries when he is unhappy. It would be strange if he didn’t wear me thin."
Yu Lu held the baby, "He seems quite well-behaved to me!"
Yushuang was also surprised, "This little rascal recognizes people. Besides my dad, you’re the first one who can hold him for a long time."
Yu Lu didn’t believe it, "Really?!"
