Chapter 128: Chapter 128 Anti-aging_1
Four elders within the clan frowned, and with a gesture, they spent ten taels of silver; Old Wang’s family really had made it big.
The Clan Leader looked at Zhou Shuren, "Today’s affairs concern Chang Zhi. This silver should go to your household."
Zhou Shuren curled his lips into a smile, "Uncle, these words of yours make me uneasy, don’t they? The whole matter today was resolved thanks to the clan’s support. This silver should serve to show my respect to uncle and the other elders."
Zhulan glanced at the Clan Leader. The Clan Leader was shrewd indeed, insisting the money belonged to their family, knowing full well they would not accept it. Zhou Shuren’s reply would allow others to accept the silver with a clear conscience. They were all crafty.
The Clan Leader did not decline further; to do so would seem overdone and lose its grace, "Alright, we will accept your kind gesture."
Zhulan’s family did not want the money, so ten taels of silver—two taels per household—was perfect. Households without scholars could live frugally for half a year with two silver taels; it was a substantial unexpected fortune, which made everyone happy.
Zhulan and Zhou Shuren therefore excused themselves to leave.
On ancient nights without the moon, the darkness was profound, and it was challenging to see the path before you. Carrying a lantern, Zhulan and Zhou Shuren walked home slowly. Zhulan couldn’t help but grip Zhou Shuren’s hand tightly. It was late, and the lights in every home had been extinguished. In the village, not even a dog barked, which was quite terrifying.
Zhou Shuren did not intend to scare Zhulan. Scaring people could be lethal. He held Zhulan’s hand tightly and walked quickly toward their home.
Once they were home, the main hall was still lit. The eldest Zhou, who had been waiting in the hall, saw that his parents were back and knew the issue had been resolved. He stood up, "Dad, I’m going to sleep."
Zhou Shuren nodded, "Alright."
Zhulan glanced at the stove where the eldest had kept the fire going. She added more firewood before entering the house to change clothes. Zhou Shuren came in with hot water, "You’ve walked quite a bit; soak your feet."
Zhulan, busy attending to Zhou Shuren, had grown accustomed to him bringing hot water. Sometimes habits could be frightening. As she soaked her feet, she watched Zhou Shuren change, and in half a year, due to adjustments Zhulan had made in his diet, he was no longer the lean man he had been upon arrival. With the added exercise over the months, she spotted his abs!
Zhulan looked down at her hands. Since arriving in ancient times, she had been diligent in self-care, drinking honey water every morning, and if honey ran out, she switched to jujube and brown sugar. She never missed a day. She also applied egg white on her face every few days for a mask. Her complexion had improved, and so had her skin. Sometimes she exercised indoors with Zhou Shuren, which toned her flesh. Even her hands, spared from cooking, had grown fairer with daily hot water soaks—nobody would believe they were the hands of a grandmother.
Though she did not have access to various modern skincare products, her maintenance was not bad. She looked much younger than when she first arrived. With her fair complexion lending her extra beauty and having not gone out much during the winter, her already pleasant features softened even more. While she couldn’t regain the appearance from her twenties, she managed to maintain a look around thirty.
Once summer arrived and cucumbers were in season, with honey becoming cheaper, she planned to care for her skin even more. She was certain she could shave off a few more years from her appearance.
Zhulan looked at Zhou Shuren, who had grown a beard. She couldn’t help but smile at the thought. The beard suited him, as it covered his face, and it was enough that she was beautiful.
Zhou Shuren finished washing first, unaware of what Zhulan was thinking but smiling because she looked happy.
The next morning, Zhulan rose early to pack everything Zhou Shuren would need. His exam was tomorrow, and today he had to stay in the county. On the day of the county exam, the county magistrate would call the roll before dawn, so staying at home meant not only missing the roll call but also not getting proper rest. It was more convenient for him to stay in the county.
Being part of a clan had its advantages. Zhou Shuren and other clan members taking the exam didn’t need to find accommodations themselves. Some clan members had moved to the county, and a place to stay had been arranged well in advance. They would only need to settle the food and lodging fee; it was not only safer but also brought some income to the clan—a win-win situation.
