Chapter 102: Chapter 102: Getting On in Years_1
Zhou Shuren gently touched his grandson’s emaciated little face, "I have to consider everything, Jiang Sheng is my son-in-law and will spend a lifetime with my daughter."
Both truly felt guilty towards their eldest daughter and had to consider everything meticulously, otherwise they wouldn’t be doing justice to their original selves.
On the way back, because the two children were so young, the speed of the ox cart was slower than before, and it took almost two hours to get home. By the time they arrived, it was already dark. Zhulan and her husband had carried the children all the way, their arms numb and without feeling.
Xue Mei and her husband had been waiting in the main hall. Hearing noises, they rushed out immediately. As soon as her second brother stopped the ox cart, Xue Mei hurried forward, "Mother, the children didn’t trouble you, did they?"
Zhulan let out a groan feeling as if her arms were no longer her own, "The kids have been good, they slept the whole way and haven’t woken up yet. Come up and wrap the children tightly before carrying them down."
Helped by her husband, Xue Mei climbed onto the ox cart, slowly approached after taking a moment to regain her composure, and upon seeing the numbness in her parents’ arms, she cried, "I’m unfilial, making parents who are getting on in years worry about me."
Zhulan, "....."
She was already used to her children accusing themselves of being unfilial, but she still couldn’t accept being referred to as advancing in age; at her age in the modern world, plenty of people were just getting married!
Xue Mei, believing her mother exhausted, carefully wrapped her daughter up, covering the little face before handing her to her husband. Then she turned to pick up her son, who was sleeping soundly. Xue Mei fought back tears, grateful for her parents’ care. After her husband took their son, she approached, "Mother, let me massage your arms for you."
Zhou Shuren furrowed his brow, "You go on down."
He couldn’t waste this rare chance to be close to his wife. Well, it seemed that his eldest daughter still needed to practice her discernment just after coming back.
Seeing her father wave his hand and then pull her mother’s arm to massage it, Xue Mei finally believed what her sister-in-law had said: in their father’s eyes, only their mother mattered, and the children were secondary. Her face flushed with envy, as even she and her husband had never been so intimate, and she admired her parents’ relationship all the more.
Zhulan’s arms were sore and numb, and she didn’t dare to speak up because her voice could easily be misinterpreted—she could only watch Zhou Shuren with tear-filled eyes, "Be gentle, will you?"
Zhou Shuren felt itchy in his heart as if it were being scratched, and his ears involuntarily flushed red.
After a while, when Zhulan’s condition improved considerably, she urged, "Go on down now!"
Several children were waiting, and no matter how thick-skinned she was, she couldn’t handle it.
Zhou Shuren secretly felt it a pity as he followed his wife down from the ox cart and entered the main hall where all his sons were present, the table set and ready for them to begin the meal as soon as they returned.
Zhou Laoda, having heard about what transpired from his younger brother, felt compassion for his older sister and brother-in-law, and was even more pained for his aging parents’ exertions, "Father, Mother, sit down and rest."
Zhou Shuren indeed felt tired. Seated at the head of the table, his gaze swept over his sons, feeling fairly satisfied that they knew to care for their parents, "You all sit too."
Unwilling to worry about the children, Zhulan asked her eldest son to bring the blankets from the ox cart, and then she turned and went to Rongchuan’s room, pushing the door open and parting the curtains to enter the heat wave that greeted her. She saw Xue Mei and her husband changing the children’s clothes. Zhulan then realized what she had seemingly forgotten—seeing her son-in-law reminded her that she forgot to bring change of clothes for her daughter and son-in-law, having been too preoccupied with the children earlier.
Xue Mei carefully tucked the children under the blankets, "Mother, you’ve also been tired all day. It’s fine with me here; you can rest assured."
Zhulan glanced around the bedroom, noting that Rongchuan had moved out without taking his chest; it, along with the kang table, had been left behind. The kang was covered with two thick blankets, and the heating wall was blazing. She then spoke, "I was only thinking of the children earlier and forgot about you two and your change of clothes. We have plenty of fabric at home, so make two sets of clothes for yourself and Jiang Sheng to change into."
Xue Mei, unaware of what exactly had happened at the Jiang family but guessing it was unpleasant, didn’t want to go back home to retrieve clothes. She felt more at ease living under her parents’ care, especially since her usually critical elder sister-in-law had stopped antagonizing her, "Thank you, Mother."
In fact, she wasn’t in need of fabric; she wasn’t foolish and had used her dowry mainly on herself, except for making clothes for her in-laws during holidays. Besides being harassed for not having good food, she had dressed as one of the most respectably clothed people in the village. Now that her parents knew her situation, she indeed needed their help, and she would gratefully accept what they gave. The more her parents doted on her, the straighter her back would be in front of her husband.
Jiang Sheng sincerely bowed deeply, "Thank you, Mother-in-law, for your care."
