Chapter 1019: Chapter 1119: Lost

Zhou Shuren stroked his beard, "I hope this lad proves himself."

Qiu Yan smiled, then pushed the door and went out. Zhou Shuren wasn’t one to act without significant reason, but this time it was clear to anyone with eyes, the key being that the Emperor had truly given him a chance. This honor and favor were truly enviable, but then again, Zhou Shuren’s sons were also competent. Without any real talent himself, even Zhou Shuren’s abilities couldn’t push him forward.

Qiu Yan thought about his own mediocre offspring, filled with envy. If his descendants were outstanding, he might at least have the courage to strive.

Returning home in the afternoon, Zhulan hadn’t even stepped through her doorway when the Wu family’s steward arrived, announcing that Song Lan was going into labor. The Wu family lacked any elders, so they had come to seek her.

Zhulan then took a carriage to the Wu residence, which was somewhat chaotic. Song Lan and Wang Ling had been pregnant one after the other, and now that one had gone into labor, the other had followed suit due to stress.

Zhulan frowned, scolded the maids and servants, then eased a bit when she saw the midwife was there. Fortunately, Song Lan had already prepared a midwife. Song Lan’s condition wasn’t bad, "Don’t be nervous, listen to the midwife, I’ll be right outside."

Seeing her godmother, Song Lan felt relieved. Her own mother had been sick recently and was supposed to come over to supervise, but she hadn’t allowed it. Now that her godmother was here, she could focus on giving birth, "Godmother, please check on my sister-in-law, I’m worried about her."

Zhulan patted Song Lan’s hand, "Okay, I will go take a look."

Zhulan then went over to Wang Ling’s room. Today, none of the men of the Wu family were home, leaving the servants quite flustered. Wang Ling was in better condition than Song Lan.

Wang Ling was gathering her strength, "Auntie, you are here."

"Your sister-in-law is alright; I came to check on you so I can reassure her, as she’s been worried."

Wang Ling endured waves of pain in her abdomen, "Auntie, I’m doing okay; the midwife says it will be a while."

Zhulan, having extensive experience in childbirth, reassured her, "I’ll be right outside; you just focus on giving birth."

Enduring pain, Wang Ling smiled, "Okay."

Zhulan went out. Song Lan went into labor first. After informing Song Lan, Zhulan then sat on a chair, waiting for news. Childbirth wasn’t something that could be completed in a moment.

The first of the Wu family to return was Wu Yong. Upon seeing his aunt, his anxious heart settled, "Auntie, you are here."

Zhulan gestured for Wu Yong to wipe the sweat from his forehead, "Don’t worry. Wang Ling is doing fine."

It was Wu Yong’s first time becoming a father, and he was truly anxious. Seeing the doctor sitting nearby, "Auntie has always been thoughtful."

Zhulan smiled, "It’s not me; your sister-in-law had everything prepared in advance."

Wu Yong felt grateful for his sister-in-law. Like a father, his elder brother had done so much for their siblings over the years, and his sister-in-law had cared for them like a mother. He clearly saw and understood, "Thank heavens for my brother and sister-in-law."

Zhulan nodded. The children of the Wu family had good hearts. Watching Wu Yong pacing anxiously, she did not ask him to sit.

Wu Ming didn’t come back from the Ministry of Rites due to receiving news, for tomorrow the ambassadors were to arrive in the capital. This time, under Wong Ju’s supervision, Wu Ming was too busy to leave, and knowing that the godmother had gone facilitated him to wait until after the government office hours to return home.

When Wu Ming arrived at home, "Hasn’t she given birth yet?"

Zhulan thought, that was typical of Wu Ming. His wife was in labor, anxious, yet his mind was more focused on his duties, "Not yet, the midwife said it will be a while longer. Do you want to change your clothes?"

Wu Ming glanced at the birthing room, then went to change his clothes.

Zhulan wasn’t surprised that Wu Ming had only returned after finishing his work, but Song Lan would likely be disappointed. Even if she understood, a woman’s mind is sensitive; disappointment was inevitable.

Zhulan couldn’t leave. Song Lan’s mother couldn’t come and only sent a maid to wait for news. She needed to oversee everything herself as time slowly passed.

The first to give birth was Wang Ling, who had a daughter. Wu Yong, grinning broadly, repeated the word "good" several times, then waited for the child to be brought out.

Song Lan’s physique wasn’t as good as Wang Ling’s, and since the baby was somewhat large, it still hadn’t been born.

Zhou Shuren returned home and didn’t see his wife, only then he learned about the Wu family’s childbirth and hurried over without even eating.

Upon seeing his godfather, Wu Ming said, "Godmother, you worked hard today, I can watch over her myself."

Zhulan waved her hand. "I’ll stay and watch over her, otherwise I won’t feel at ease. Ask the kitchen to prepare something to eat; we’ll eat here later."

Wu Ming, "Alright."

Dinner was eaten, and only then was Song Lan’s child born, a son. Wu Ming had been overly calm, but upon seeing the baby, he experienced the joy of becoming a father for the first time and couldn’t bear to put the child down.

Zhulan waited until the doctor had examined the child and confirmed that he was healthy, then went to see Song Lan, who had exhaustedly fallen asleep. After instructing the maid to take careful care, she took the carriage home.

Zhulan, sitting in the carriage, "Wu Ming is too calm."

A wife is never the most important thing.

Zhou Shuren chuckled, "That’s why Wu Ming is a boss; he always knows what’s most important."

Zhulan pursed her lips, "I’m tired."

"Lean on me and rest for a while."

"Okay."

The next morning, Zhulan eyed Chang Yi’s clothes issued by the Ministry of Rites. Although not an official uniform, it closely resembled one. Chang Yi was extremely careful while eating, avoiding anything with broth, and she had seen him cautiously touching his clothing more than once.

After breakfast, Chang Yi left. Mrs. Zhao accompanied him to the gates and watched the carriage move away before heading back, still feeling uneasy. "Mother, my husband won’t make any mistakes today, right?"

Zhulan also sought reassurance but as an elder she affirmed, "Yes, Chang Yi won’t make a mistake; he will seize this opportunity."

Mrs. Zhao trusted her mother-in-law, "Mother, I’ll go back and pick up the gift, then head to the Wu’s."

"Okay."

At the Wu’s, when Zhulan arrived, many of Song’s relatives were present, and there were already numerous gifts piled up. Song Lan, having slept well yesterday, looked quite well.

Zhulan showed the gift to Song Lan; by now, she was accustomed to giving gifts that reflected the baby’s zodiac sign, offering good symbolism without necessitating much thought about the gift.

Mrs. Zhao and Su Xuan arrived together; the two were playing with the baby. Focused, Mrs. Zhao remarked, "This child looks like Wu Ming."

Su Xuan added, "The mouth and eyes resemble Song Lan; the child is handsome."

Because the first child was a boy, Song Lan’s face relaxed, continuously smiling.

Zhulan looked carefully; Song Lan wasn’t distressed because Wu Ming hadn’t returned in time. Reflecting on Song Lan’s temperament and overall perspective, she reassured herself needlessly, "Confinement is a serious matter; you need to take good care of yourself."

Song Lan took note, "Godmother, you worked hard yesterday."

"It wasn’t hard; I was supposed to do this, and your mother asked me. Don’t worry about anything; just focus on your confinement now."

Song Lan looked at her sleeping son, her smile deepening; indeed, she had nothing else to think about.

At the Ministry of Rites, Chang Yi arrived early and then stayed close to Director Wang. It wasn’t until His Highness Prince Qi arrived that Chang Yi quietly counted the hours, his gaze resolute; success or failure would be determined today.
